This is an amazing duo. Trying to compare these two is comparing apples to pomegranates. So Barbra oversings, but she does it better than anyone I can think of and it works for this song. And Ray Charles is, well, Ray Charles! Perfect energy, sound and soul. Every great singer is doing duets with everybody and their dog, but this one stands out!!!

By contrast, Charles's vocal technique always contributes to the sense of the song. He is musical; Streisand is technical. In this song, at least, she's a train wreck.

But I suspect that she really hadn't thought much about this classic country song and just didn't understand it as a song. It's a bit like imagining a great operatic tenor tackling the song. Rushmore... and I must really admire Streisand to say that, because I find her politics so repellant... but she sure nails this performance with Brother Ray, and this may be one of the moments that made her think, "Gee, I've been a stage and screen star for awhile, so... maybe I should get soulful and start to have some hits..."
