I believe those Western pacific F-units were ex- Wellsville, Addison, & Galeton. They used to run locals with an A and a B unit only, along side the ford centercabs they had.
I can't wait to go up to Graeagle this summer!!! I'm SO excited I get to FINALLY see some trains! Oh, my old channel was MultihornGuy. Please subscribe!
@AndyGC100 It Has Two SD40 Engines Outputting 6,600 Horsepower. Sadly These Giants Aren't Used For Freight As Much As They Were. Mostly Special Excursions Like The Superbowl Train.
@vidfreak727: All the equipment, including the cabooses were displayed for the Dunsmuir Railroad Days, and this train is taking them back to the Portola Railroad Museum, The weird car is a gondola carrying more museum equipment.
BNSF is in a rather grumpy mood today look at it! mean things happen to grumpy people while union is like " fuck you later on my bitch". WE CAN HANDLE IT!!!
@K5H13760: Actually, it's a classic Nathan M5, M5R24 to be specific, as I've been told from the people who own the horn. It has that dissonance like the K5LLA, but sounds more mellow and doesn't quite have that trumpet-like brillance of the K5.
@keikokeiko3: For safety, the rules say the crew has to blow the horn in a long-long-short-long sequence before a crossing. That's probably why it seems like the horns are being blown all the time.
@icars98: The train was pulling equipment from thenPortola Railroad Museum, and they brought both passenger and freight cars to display at Dunsmuir. The train was bringing them back to Portola in this video.
i would laugh if windows opened on the sides of them and heavy war cannons came out and they started shooting at each other....BNSF vs Union Pacific. Cast ur bets XD
@Magnumkevlar: The last 5 cars were boxcar, caboose, caboose, gondola, and a caboose. The boxcar probably contained Portola Railroad Museum goodies, the gondola had some equipment, and the last caboose had at least one person riding in it.
and why did these locomotives not meet union pacifics standards when they were haulin freight? 6600 hp is really powerful to me i mean for a single diesel
They met UP specs...they designed them and had them built...but they were built in 1969...so are over 40 years old....probably OVER a million miles on them....so its time to retire them. Plus those huge 8 wheel trucks can't be run everywhere. They are impressive aren't they?
To see damage to the UP tracks caused by the flood of 97, search for flooding in the Feather River Canyon or "1997 New Years Flood in Plumas County Trailer"
I love that M% horn on thre thats cool sounding I was in Rochelle Illinois less tha 2 weeks ago and kept hearing a train passing through town with a horn like this on it and it sounded almost identical to it heard it from my motel but never made it down to the railroad park in time to see it if the locomotive I heard actully had an M5 on it who really knows I was told not likelly but it sure sunded like this horn I was told it was an out of tune K5LA or P5 but not an M5 like this I never knew
Been to Portola. Great museum. You can actually climb inside some of the displays. Plus, during certain hours (for a small fee), you can operate a locomotive in the yard. Be sure to leave a donation, so they can keep the place open. :-)
It's absolutely amazing to see this engine in it's reality. I had never seen this UP engine in real life. Only a model of it. Wow this shot you took is nice.
For those criticizing the Centennials TE to HP ratio, remember when they were operated a lot of HP was reserved for their primary purpose, FAST (80 90 MPH) western freight. UP even built specially geared SD40-2Hs (fast fortys) that could supplement and keep up with the Centennial.
Love the DD40 ! Most powerful diesel ever built, 16 wheel drive, saw one on static display at museum of transportation in st louis mo. -- Great to see one run!!! what a classic-!!
Several do. I know of 4.. there is still I think like.. 10 out there. 2 at the Portola Museum, One is still on the UP roster (Still used) and one was on the Dakota Southern, OOS. (Out Of Service).
This train is very fany, I led microsoft in game even him it Train Simulator and I will say it, that not exhaust lubie but particularly, it for it estimate lady give 5:***
Tractive effort affects how easily a train can get started. Horsepower determines how fast it can go once moving.
Hence why slugs are used at hump yards - more TE, so the hump/trim sets can actually move the cars, but low HP (in fact, none on the slug), since they needn't move fast in a yard.
On the other hand, this is why a bog-standard AC6000CW (CSX has some weighted down now, more TE) can move IM as fast as it wants, but has trouble moving coal - low TE, so it can't get the train moving.
They add no HP, since this comes from the diesel engine, which slugs lack. Instead, they allow the full amount of HP to be applied by adding more Tractive Effort - otherwise, the wheels would just slip when too much HP is applied.
In other words, they spread out the HP from the mother loco by adding more wheels and weight.
I am going out and promptly remove the horsepower decals from all the traction motors I have in inventory.
Can you believe those bastards have been lying to me all this time!!!!
I suppose all electrical motors have no horsepower. I mean, if I have an electric engine in my car and the battery supplies the horsepower....then my car has no horsepower...just the battery has the horsepower.
Conversely, 200 horsepower over 6 axles would be worthless.
Spreading weight over the axles reduces tractive effort, not increases it. You want weight on your axles which is why some units are ballasted.
However with a six axle unit you have the additional traction motors and 4 extra wheels making contact with the rail. None of this is important though if you don't have the HP behind it generating electricity.
