I think the scariest idea in the film is the fact that its not safe for any body to go to sleep. The first I knew of that theme was Nightmare on Elm Street, but Body Snatchers beat them to it decades before. Fantastic film.

@kallemick I haven't seen the 2007 version either, though from what I hear if you don't see it, that's to be taken as a good thing. I don't know, they twisted it up that time around that Nicole Kidman's husband started the invasion, and her son was born immune to it so therein lies her hope of stopping it. I prefer these older horror movies when things made more sense and were not so complicated, or stupid, you know? Seems they just can't make anything good anymore.

Actually, it's the democrats, not the "tea baggers" (thanks for the pejorative term), that are the "collectivists". The original Invasion of the Body Snatchers was widely interpreted as a warning against communism and other types of collectivism. The Tea Party generally stands for individualism.

The man freaking out at the beginning of the film. (The main character, I think his name was Steve.) Anyway that actor ended up playing the role of the evil network tycoon in Weird Al's UHF. Which is just about the greatest film of all time, second only to The Diabolical Dr.Cyclops.

He had very little real power, unlike the communists and the seed pods. As soon as people started standing up to him he crumbled. That didn't work so well with the communists.
