Well the modern Barbie is much thinner, the old one doesn't look anorexic to me. (Neither do, Barbie just looks like a woman with a naturally thin figure.) Also to me the older Barbie's face looks more 'natural'. The newer barbie looks like make-up overload in my opinion; while the older barbie just looks like she made a mistake in color choice. The new barbie does have a much more realisticly shaped body though. There are definately pros and cons for each.

I think I need to get out my old Barbies and compare them to some newer ones. I have a bunch from the late 80s early 90s. I remember when I was in high school we measured a barbie with a tape measure in geometry and tried to create a scale of what a real woman with those proportions would look like and it was crazy. The ankles would never hold her up with those boobs. Around that time I remember Barbie makers talking about making Barbie more realistic but I didnt know if they ever implemented it

Her arms are still unrealistically skinny. I think Mattel should just make lots of different body types with Barbie instead of trying to find ONE "ideal" type for her. I'm sure you can imagine the problems that can arise when toys/media try to market ONE body type. I feel inferior when people say that girls SHOULD have curves. I'm an adult female and I really am built more like the vintage Barbie (I'm not anorexic). I think they should make a variety of figures.

@SummerCicadaMusic I think the reason why Mattel (and other doll makers) choose to make a universal body type is to make it easier to produce clothing and accessories that fit. It would be complicated and expensive having to make all the clothes in different sizes and shapes for different size dolls.
