My guess..a camera suspended above them, looking down. Looking closely, you can see them not climbing, but TUMBLING to create the illusion. Same trick was used in the 60's Batman tv series...When Batman and Robin were "climbing" walls, they were on a horizontal surface, walking forward, not up, and wires were used to lift their capes, and the camera angle was changed to make it look like they were going up, but were, in fact, just walking forward with slightly exaggerated physical movements. :D

No, they didn't have color - every frame was HAND PAINTED. Impressive quality for 1907, especially when you look at the choppy videos they were making in 1915 - 1925.

this would be great on stage. If the acrobates were on the floor of the stage, but consealed by a sorrounding box from the audience, a large stagesized mirror could be hung at a 45* angle making it seem to the audience that the were witnessing it as a full on display....

A nice short piece, I would daresay art, filmed by the pioneering filmmaker Segundo de Chomón in 1907. So, maybe we can give the long dead director (1929d) a little slack when he compensated for the lack of special effects back in the day by filming those actors performing on their backs. All in all, a very clever and satisfying way in presenting these acrobatic "feats" to the viewer.

This illusion is easy...there are people dressed in black--the same color as the backdrop along with black ladders and chairs (to stand on). The people in black carry the acrobats who then stand on the black ladders/chairs...I did this once for a show.
