It's a little artist's trick. xD

You make an under-layer, then go to the paint bucket, choose black, and then click the under-layer to make it that one color. :P

@iggy123 its simple, create a separate layer for highlights and fill that layer black, but change the layer mode to SCREEN. Make sure you put this new layer on top of your drawing. Now start painting white or highlights on the black filled layer you just created. Voila!

How are you doing that black and white part for the shading?

I believe he's sorta using a masking effect. Its like this, he's working on a masking layer which only works in black and white and corresponds to the coloured layer on top, depending on the contrasts between back and white, the coloured layer's shade darkens or lightens. Like if the coloured layers pink for example, if you whiten up the masking layer, then that part in the coloured layer becomes light pink. Though, I'm not sure that its called masking. Hope this helps. :)
