I can't believe I'm just finding this channel now. Great job, guys. Outstanding video quality, and I can tell a ton of time went into editing too. Time to add this one to my list, along with the tiny Rolleiflex from a couple years back. By the way, the correct way to take ninja hip shots is to hold the camera upside down, so that you trip the shutter release with your pinky. Feels weird at first, but is much easier to aim accurately that way. ;) Keep 'em coming!
No point compare this to other micro 4/3 because you can change the lens and that is one of the reason I would buy a micro 4/3 over a good compact. Fuji just announce x pro1 its going to be a kick ass micro 4/3. It will make me I think twice before getting an E-P3 as I really like their lenses but not so sure about the price thought, I would imagine it will cost more than x100 when it was first announce.

Fuji, good job on making a decent and good looking camera, but DAMN is it expensive! It's not at all worth 1300$, but it's not a bad camera by any means. Could definitely use a price cut to at the most 700$
@juanjillocr Features and quality? It isn't a bad camera, but it's quality is nothing to brag about, and the features are nice, but the camera's functions are very inconvenient to access. And you're stuck with one lens, which also should be a reason to decrease value. Maybe if they made this with a Leica style mount, it might be worth it.
@ITSbigwillystyle I hear you with the one lens issue, but it's still a great camera. You get great compacts for over $500, and those aren't as good as the x100. So I guess Im saying yeah, a bit cheaper but not $700
Absolutely excellent review. I got quite emotional :) I'm a beginner and am going to buy an X10 tomorrow. I took advice from a photographer who works in one the shops in my town and he has just bought one as a carry around camera. I've compared it to the Canon G12 and S100. It matches up favourably but on looks it kills them. My friend who's a serious hobbyist said to get a canon no matter what but once I had the X10 in my hands I fell in love. I would have never considered Fuji before. Yessss
@torturelabs Nothing weird ~ Asian are around the world , some have American accent , Italian accent ,German accent , Russian accent and even their very own Chinese accent when speaking English . I'm Asian and sometimes I talk in accent (American , British and Chinese accent mostly).
@torturelabs I guess depend on how their were raised , I watch a lot of English shows since I was a young boy so accent came from there even though English is my second language . Even when I speak my country national language , I still speak in some sort of British/Chinese accent . So , accent is just environmental things and lucky Kai did not use Chinese or Cantonese in DigitalRev . :)
I've had mine since March. I've now taken thousands of shots and love love love this camera. It gets as much use as my Canon 5D MKll. One point about switching from viewfinder to lens view, you're saying you don't see the point, but it's mandatory when shooting macro if you want to properly see your subject

If you are thinking about buying this camera, do not buy it. There is a common 'sticky blades' problem that many x100 will eventually get due to the design of the lens in the x100. So far to date, Fujifilm has not even publicly acknowledged this problem. Shocking for a $1000+ premium camera. You can read about all the x100 owners complaining about it on the Fujifilm Talk forum on DPreview. Until Fujifilm acknowledges this issue, stay away from the x100!!

That aside, I have one of these and I'm still learning how to use it. It definitely has a learning curve. Don't expect to take it out of the box like a Digital Rebel and expect to start taking great shots.
@camosplater No, sorry, you have to download an installer and the update. I did it, still don't know exactly how. But when I followed Fuji's on-line instructions it all came out okay.
@camosplater you go to the website for fuji and you'll get a blank sd or sdhc OR sdxc card and just save the update to the card and put it back in the camera and follow the instructions as per the website...Good Luck :D
Seriously... photographers are weird people... who make weird reviews and wear weird clothes (fisherman hat, stupid purse bags, indiana jones vest), they wonder why they always get mugged while street shooting, key objective, blend in retards. All said and done, I would find it difficult to use such an expensive camera without at least a wrist strap. Doesn't interfere like a neck strap & the cheapest safety measure around. The only camera I use without a strap is my Samsung Pixon 12 which is well protected in its tuff luv case.

@kevinmsft What makes you think the accent is fake ? If you only heard the audio, you'd never think it was fake. The accent is 100% genuine southern England from someone who must have spent a considerable time there. I presume Kai is a camera guy not an actor.
It doesn't surprise me that only people from Hong Kong like me take offense from the accent... Unless Mr. Kai here is born in England and only happens to live in HK now, I'd catogerize the accent to be at least "forced".
No Chinese born in HK, no matter how long he studies in England, should speak like this. =)

I understand why you can't stand to listen. I have same problem with American actors who get the English/Scottish & Irish accent wrong.Kai's accent is natural though!

I speak french, and I try to copy what I hear. I spent some time in Paris, so it would not be surprising if I talked with a Paris accent. Accents are acquired so it can be by any means- family, environment, peers, education, personal influences, personal preferences, etc... Just a heads up...I thought I need to update the firmware when I got the x100...but when I went to update it, I don't have to. Apparently it already update for me~~
So yea...If anyone getting this camera around this time and waiting for it to arrive at your place. Chances are your version will probably be 1.01, or even 1.02 ver. that Fuji planning to release soon -__-... this week! ! ! Hopefully...
I would go for 35mm. Since you will get a 1.5x cropped sensor (I guess), you will find 50mm too narrow (equivalent to 75mm in fullframe). If you really want 1.4, you can get sigma 30mm f1.4 (which is also a little wider, which is good), but usually 1.8 is fast enough (it's cheaper and lighter as well). By the way, consider strongly the kit lenses 18-55mm, they have great quality and are very cheap/useful/light.
For someone who's getting into Photography, would you guys recommend him this camera over a DSLR or Four thirds? I feel I should own both DSLR and either 4/3 or X100, but no clue what my priority should be.
@fikerk - Buy a DSLR first. Then you buy this nice toy if you still want to. If you want to play the ninja, get a decent point&shoot (like S95 or G12) and you are all set.
By the way, for the price of this X100, you get a cheap DSLR + 35mm + 18-200 and what else can you dream for?

with the M9 and this X100, how quite are those camera? Would you care to do a test by shooting attractive women in the street of Hong Kong and not get intimating? or Perhaps inside a fashion mall and take casual female by standers? Old lady forks don't count of course. Now that's a true challenge for you all at DigitalRev.
Loved the review. Real beaut mate. I can only wish that other camera manufacturers would follow suite and bring back proper controls to modern cameras, such as shutter dial and lens ring aperture control. (with the shutter dial, they could also include an ISO setting window or lever, just like the old days.) This would speed up control settings so much more than the current need of continual button pushing. We should be in control of the camera, not the other way around.
@EJWolff In old day, I got to change ASA/ISO by rewinding, open the case, replace the film, close the case, and twist the ASA node while lifting it. So, no complaint for me with x100 :p
I think that this is one of the best digital rev videos ever. It shows kai's passion for photography and not the fake top gear style show it's recently turned into. I wonder how this compares to the e-p1/2 by Olympus? And if an EVIL version of this camera was made, it would have a high probability of killing leica (and I would buy it immediately).

@camosplater No, sorry, you have to download an installer and the update. I did it, still don't know exactly how. But when I followed Fuji's on-line instructions it all came out okay.

@camosplater you go to the website for fuji and you'll get a blank sd or sdhc OR sdxc card and just save the update to the card and put it back in the camera and follow the instructions as per the website...Good Luck :D

Seriously... photographers are weird people... who make weird reviews and wear weird clothes (fisherman hat, stupid purse bags, indiana jones vest), they wonder why they always get mugged while street shooting, key objective, blend in retards. Granted kai wears a camera purse, but they seem to be the only sane people who make real camera reviews without bitching like a xbox geek does about the ps3... I heart digital rev...

All said and done, I would find it difficult to use such an expensive camera without at least a wrist strap. Doesn't interfere like a neck strap & the cheapest safety measure around. The only camera I use without a strap is my Samsung Pixon 12 which is well protected in its tuff luv case.

@kevinmsft What makes you think the accent is fake ? If you only heard the audio, you'd never think it was fake. The accent is 100% genuine southern England from someone who must have spent a considerable time there. I presume Kai is a camera guy not an actor.

It doesn't surprise me that only people from Hong Kong like me take offense from the accent... Unless Mr. Kai here is born in England and only happens to live in HK now, I'd catogerize the accent to be at least "forced".
No Chinese born in HK, no matter how long he studies in England, should speak like this. =)

@kevinmsft Thanks for a polite reply. I've lived in England all my life and still believe his accent is 100% natural. At the beginning of the review, Kai completely overdoes the accent on purpose, but I guess that's just his sense of humour.
I don't know Kai's history to know where he has lived.Therefore it's difficult to judge.
I understand why you can't stand to listen. I have same problem with American actors who get the English/Scottish & Irish accent wrong.Kai's accent is natural though!

I speak french, and I try to copy what I hear. I spent some time in Paris, so it would not be surprising if I talked with a Paris accent. I believe it is normal and acceptable for someone to adopt the accent of the place where they learnt the language.

Accents are acquired so it can be by any means- family, environment, peers, education, personal influences, personal preferences, etc... It's like you are hating on an African guy with straight silky hair who is devote Bruce Lee fan!
I have slight British accent too. It is because of my education for sure.

Just a heads up...I thought I need to update the firmware when I got the x100...but when I went to update it, I don't have to. Apparently it already update for me~~
So yea...If anyone getting this camera around this time and waiting for it to arrive at your place. Chances are your version will probably be 1.01, or even 1.02 ver. that Fuji planning to release soon -__-... this week! ! ! Hopefully...

I would go for 35mm. Since you will get a 1.5x cropped sensor (I guess), you will find 50mm too narrow (equivalent to 75mm in fullframe). If you really want 1.4, you can get sigma 30mm f1.4 (which is also a little wider, which is good), but usually 1.8 is fast enough (it's cheaper and lighter as well). By the way, consider strongly the kit lenses 18-55mm, they have great quality and are very cheap/useful/light.

@fikerk - Buy a DSLR first. Then you buy this nice toy if you still want to. If you want to play the ninja, get a decent point&shoot (like S95 or G12) and you are all set.
By the way, for the price of this X100, you get a cheap DSLR + 35mm + 18-200 and what else can you dream for?

Loved the review. Real beaut mate. I can only wish that other camera manufacturers would follow suite and bring back proper controls to modern cameras, such as shutter dial and lens ring aperture control. (with the shutter dial, they could also include an ISO setting window or lever, just like the old days.) This would speed up control settings so much more than the current need of continual button pushing. We should be in control of the camera, not the other way around.

@EJWolff In old day, I got to change ASA/ISO by rewinding, open the case, replace the film, close the case, and twist the ASA node while lifting it. So, no complaint for me with x100 :p

I think that this is one of the best digital rev videos ever. It shows kai's passion for photography and not the fake top gear style show it's recently turned into. I wonder how this compares to the e-p1/2 by Olympus? And if an EVIL version of this camera was made, it would have a high probability of killing leica (and I would buy it immediately).
