  • I bought one and love it. It has replaced my Gerber camp ax in my pack.

  • Just wondering what you prefer after having hands on with both: the Frontier or the Trail hawk?

  • The bit looks like it might be modeled after some kind of Norse axe. Pretty cool, imo.

  • that really is a nice lil camp axe....

  • Great review and I totally agree. I use Cold Steel's Rifleman Hawk, just because I wanted a hammerhead on my hawk. It has worked great for me ever since. Hawks rule!

  • Very helpful video, thanks.

  • Wow, that thing is almost as good as my traditional longer handle axe! I do a lot of cutting, too. I'm getting one of those, it's perfect. Thanx for sharing.

  • Cool!

Great axe, great video! Very informative!

    Thanks!

  • Just out of curiosity, why is there so much of the handle showing above the axe head?

  • thanks for the post

  • Great review and the right information. Way to go

  • Thank you for the great review.

  • @ 5:37 - Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!

  • would you prefer this over the trail hawk?

  • Prairie Hawk huh, kinda like it.. it's got a ring to it.

  • Excellent review ... im going to get one :)

  • it is friction fit - why not just make a short handle for the smaller stuff - its only wood

  • Nice review bro thanks

  • Excellent review, very thorough.

An axe type tool will always beat a knife in any chopping task. It's really sad to watch people chop and baton firewood with knives. I don't have anything against it per se, as an emergency technique, but if you can choose what tools to bring with you, choosing a knife over an axe for a forested area is just dumb.

The cold steel hawks are decent for the money. The good thing about them is that you can abuse them, even dig and chop roots, without feeling bad.

  • @aseglkj Agree with you, pretty much every task you can do with a knife you can do with a axe or a smaller hatchet.

  • I bought a coldsteel special forces shovel...thats a tasty bit of kit..!!

  • Great video, thank you!

  • "I think you get the point"

    Do ho ho!

  • anytime you use a sharpened edge of any tool to strike a fire steel and your life is not on the line a puppy dies. :)

  • 2 Hawks 'Longhunter' tomahawk, just bought on ebay for 100.00. Check it out more are available, really a step up in qhality but same uses. I enjoyed watching and appreciate your video very much. You convinced me to get the hawk. Thanks.

  • @ZEUKI1. Thanks for the info much appreciated. How hasvthe pack been holding up for you under your use? Looking very hard at getting one and don't what to waste money. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

  • @badjujuR6

To be honest , for the money I am very pleased, some people look down on voodoo tactical products thats fine. I started with there smaller version that is a hydration/daypack had it for two years with no failures zippers or stitchings and upsized to this three day assault about 9 months ago. It has survived four wheeling fishing hiking review trips etc. I paid 50 bucks for it and dont regret it at all, I do like some of the maxpeditions though, higher quality higher price....

  • @ZEUKI1 copy of a medieval Rus-axe

  • @ZEUKI1 WHAT SIZE SET SCREW IS IN THERE?

  • Just curious, what pack is that? Looks like a Maxpedtion, but doesn't match any of there products....

  • @badjujuR6

The pack is a Voodoo Tactical, I believe it is the three day assault pack.

  • Excellent video man, most people are just like...... This is really cool and stuff. You showed the actual uses for it. A+ brotha

  • by the way does the head slide of the handle.

  • Nice pack.

  • shaft...

  • god forbid a screw eating up your shaft......

  • Umm it might be sharp now but if he keeps it up like that he is now going to have any thing left.

  • Nice review

  • for cut trees no good to light

  • Great tool for making amputations...♫♪♫

  • for the top of the hawk, one idea is to just square it off sorta like some people do machetes. then use it to push down the steel

  • Anybody else think that stump was a rock? :|

  • @Jafarmarar

Thats funny you mention that, there are a few of those around here. I dont know why, but some of the stumps are loaded with pitch and they are SOLID, when i miss and hit the stump its like concrete, the pitch shatters and its like getting hit in the face with glass......one reason I normally have the glasses with me, And found a better review stump.

  • Well done, Brother. I have been putting my composite handles on these hawks for years, and I am just starting to teach techniques on proper hawk techniques, that make them shine over hatchets and axes in some instances. Thanks for noting the efficiency of the hawks. I consider them to be the second half of a long blade/hawk pair. Proper Hawks are just as much a tool and a weapon. This hawk isn't really a true hawk IMHO, a subject I am covering on my vids. Thanks for posting this. - Mike / vec

  • Good vid.

  • Great review. Checking out your other stuff. Looking forward to your thoughts of how, and what to pack. Matt from Minnesota.

  • Have the trail hawk, the steel is soft as shit.

  • Thanks for the review man!

  • "some dude got brilliant" ... LOL !! !

  • what tomahawk is best for throwing please awnser!

  • @keithleable

Less blade = deep damage, slightly lower hit rate. (i.e. 3 in. axe blade)

More blade = shallow damage, slightly higher hit rate. (i.e. 4 in. axe blade)

I prefer tomahawks with less blade...and since they are thinner wedges, you can penetrate more deeply than the average axe.

Tomahawks are better axes in every respect but for wood splitting. Splitting Mauls/Wedges are best suited for that menial chore.

For everything else, there's Napalm and Gunpower.

  • @LoneIndividual what tomahawk is best for melee combat? :3

  • @cuzgandalfgothigh99

    That's a loaded question! lol.

My answer is similar to "what tomahawk is best for throwing" question. It's quite the personal preference of course.

Medium weight, thin wedge, long face, sharpened beard, medium-long shaft, full tang (steel handle), no spikes, good gripping, visible.

Depends what else you're utilizing and the opponents equipment and skill set. So look for a tomahawk that is balanced in it's capabilities.

Look for added utility and use your imagination.

  • @LoneIndividual seems logical. Lol, thnx man.

  • @cuzgandalfgothigh99

I'm not in a militia or anything. I'm just an assassin that looks for simple yet effective ways of doing my work.

  • @LoneIndividual im not a militia either. in fact, i would look forward to slaughter some of the governments militia. :D just let me get my tomahawk and knife and rifle...

  • @cuzgandalfgothigh99

Don't you mean the Civilan Defense Force AKA brown shirt Gustapo?

    lol

  • @LoneIndividual well, i dont know what sort of servants the u.s. government is dragging up from hell these days. :3

  • @cuzgandalfgothigh99

I think most of the U.S. is in bad shape. We have too many people not working. That's dangerous.

We need public servants that liberate markets and resources if we are to deal with unemployment in a real way. If not, prepare for a shortage of resources. Screw all forms of currency. Credit will mean shit.

Live humbly, Be practical, Find good company.

  • @LoneIndividual Mhm.. mmkay, yes, good for you. ill be lurking around the plains and forests meanwhile and kill anyone who enters my territory. :p (except if they have a really good excuse)

  • @cuzgandalfgothigh99

Don't worry too much until food becomes scarce. That's when their excuse for killing/robbing you will be their hunger.

  • @LoneIndividual yeah. when i think about it, they are like rats, they keep destroying everything and in large numbers... ugh... but dont worry about me. Today is a good day to die anyway.

  • @LoneIndividual Tomahawks are better axes in every respect(you mean aspect?) but for wood splitting?Uh no.Axes are better in every way maybe(MAYBE) except for combat.Look at the GB and Fiskars axes. Are you afraid that you wont be able to split skulls with them? You aren't wearing a belt and braces cause you don't trust your own pants do you?Axes are mainly made for wood chopping and splitting.Well to each their own anyway

  • @555Nato The poster's use of "in every respect" is entirely correct, and it's a phrase I am familiar with. I did some "research" though (: ,here is the difference-"My work isn't perfect in every respect" as opposed to "Every aspect of my work isn't perfect". Anyway, I would agree that hawks win out on portability, flexibility, repairability, but that axes clearly do what they are designed to do better.

  • @raysteer ,English is not my native language. So you could be right :-P

I favour axes above hawks .By far.

    Had them both.

  • @raysteer ,some narrow minded person has marked your post as spam.

Anyway,I am born and live in Holland.I have an Italian father though.

Many people in the Netherlands/Holland speak English reasonably well.

The hatchet has a much better swing due to the form of the handle.

I prefer the somewhat thicker head of the hatchet also.

Makes a better splitter. And with a GB hatchet for example you can also Whittle/cut wood.

  • @555Nato We have friends in Boskoop Holland, yes, the Dutch are great English speakers, I saw Blake's Seven in English there, with Dutch subtitles, probably part of the reason. It's pretty urbanised there as I remember, but I heard about projects to regenerate the woods, are there many places for you to get out and about, do you travel abroad at all?

  • @raysteer ,Boskoop.Never been there, but I know the name.

Yes we have got a lot of English/American spoken programs with Dutch subtitles.Unlike many other European countries where they use post-synchronisation or dubbing which I find an awful thing.Replacing the voices of actors is raping a movie in my opinion. Blake's Seven I can't remember..Bu we did have Buck Rogers Battle Star Galactica,Star Trek etc.We got some nature but not much. Most is cultivated.Bricks and roads

  • @LoneIndividual ,whatch the video on Fiskar x series axes and mauls comparison edge. You'll see how it splits..

  • I'd LOVE to get my paws on the new, updated model!!! I got the earlier model (my first cold steel item ever, twelve years ago) and it's almost worn out ... I like the aesthetics of the flattened top of the head alot. It reminds me of a small bearded hand axe the vikings could have used. I would also nix the set screw, I hate it on my Riflemans hawk.

  • I own the Rifleman's Hawk and have used it quite a bit for throwing, wood processing ect. I was curious though, where did you get the longer handle for your hawk? You seem to get a hell of a lot more leverage with that length than the stock one.

  • I checked out the Trail hawk and the Riflemans hawk....... IMO the Frontier Hawk is without a doubt the best of the three choices.... Your vid convinced me that its the best one of the CS Hawks for wood processing and general all around woods companion tool..... Im subscribing based on your working man review style...

  • Nice video, thanks for the review.

  • good vid

  • dont buy it there knife center has them for cheaper

  • Excellent review brother! I have several CS hawks, but not this one... I will be getting one now. One thing I do with mine is to file a portion of the top of the hawk to throw sparks with a firesteel. Like you said it is important to save your cutting edge.

  • This is actually the best review of tomahawks i've seen on all of youtube!, best review of Cs hawks period. thanks for proving that this along with a nice small/medium knife is all you need in the woods!

  • Finally a good review on this hawk!!

  • Nice review, I think I might have to pick up one of these.

  • Good overview. I went from trail hawk to pipe hawk to improve my chopping capacity.

The hawk & a small knife, 're indestructible Combo

  • excellent overview, this is how knife/tool reviews should be done. nice job throwing too. and amen to your thoughts regarding getting the kids outside. subbed! :)

  • That was a great review. I'm going to the Cold Steel sidewalk sale this morning. I may keep an eye out for one of these.

  • Tomahawks aren't an axe - I'm surprised how well that one held up to chopping wood

  • Nice tomahawk! I wanted this one at first, but I think the trail hawk is more versatile due to the hammer smash on the rear of the hawk.

  • nice. i see the sticker still has not come off. Also how far were you standing when throwing it?

  • Thanks for making the video. It's a good demo of the Frontier hawk's abilities, especially after 11:00. I wish I had a woods to just whack away at some dead wood. You can make yourself a simple sheath out of cardboard and duct tape. Cheers!

  • @theWZZA Thank you for your comment! I have been playing around in the woods most of my life, and I cant believe it took this long to consider one of these as a survival/camp tool. I am very impressed by the amount of work this simple tool is capable of.

  • @ZEUKI1 if you think that hawk is good, get a wetterlings axe. you'll shit bricks

  • Awesome!!!
