I'm so glad groups like this churned these great tunes out back in the seventies, so I have some stuff to hear nowadays, that doesn't sound like absolute crud.
I think that this song is soooo beautiful. Unfortunately it's longevity is mostly because almost everyone can think back 2 a time when this song was appropro to a real life situation. But again, it is a great song.
@Desiep616 Yes, it does make you think. A lot. And a whole lot about when it was released and that era. Such a different world. With so much wonderful music like this that helped you look at "effed up" situations with a smile....;-)
I'm so glad that I had the insight to buy all these albums back in the 70's. With the guidance of the great Thom Bell/Linda Creed combination, The Stylistics had hit after hit after hit after hit!!!

@msmocha11 Yes, I feel you in that this reminds me so much of growing up in Memphis during that era and being young and in love. We felt like the world was opening up for us and the music reflected that sense of love and community, of pride, and consciousness. Just listen to "...remember when I told you, not long ago, if you wanted somebody new, to let me know, one day you'll know just how it feels, Payback is a dog....". This music is timeless and made for our generation. Amen!!!

We love this group!! In fact, we decided to do "PEOPLE MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND" in a studio jam session we were having! We don't claim to be the Stylistics at all, but we really did a great job!!! Our page is 4KINGTV and the song is on the second half of the "KING LIVE STUDIO PERFORMANCE" video!

Music of the times....smooth, soulful, soothing and sensual...those were good days and I am proud to have been born in the 50's so I can say I was a member of the greatest musical era in the 20th century,,,
Anybody remember the Spinners' 1972 Atlantic Records Thom Bell-produced song "How Could I Let You Get Away?" Does this Stylistics song remind you of it?
The lyrics say the truth...and payback is a dog...4 sho!!!! rember girl, like u see me today,,one day ull see urself cause payback is a dog hell yes!!!!
This song reminds me of my senior year in high school. I was about to graduate and so untested by life. Years later I must confirm "Pay Back is a Dog". I really saw this for myself up close.
@jewilks the song is called I Got Time On My Hands, from the Lets Put It All Together album, beautiful ballad, listen to Because I Love You Girl, they sound somehting alike.

@jo22338601 I give my condolences to you and your family. This the first time I have heard and it so pretty. What a beautiful medley.I love the Stylistics.
God, I love this song!!! Growing up in Chicago, this is considered a steppers' classic.....my mom had that "Rockin' Roll Baby" album that featured this cut....by the way, that picture is the back cover of the album....
just came across this song playin in an interlude on a song by the dogg pound and ime and my husband had to find out what it was. This song is too off the chain for words! I LOVE IT
Motown wasn't known as a soul label. They were more of a black pop label. They white washed their acts to get the white dollars. If you want real soul, you have to got to Stax, though I love the Motown sound.
Motown was soul, it was just a different kind of soul. Note: BLACK PEOPLE CAN BE DIFFERENT TOO, WE DON'T ALL HAVE TO BE THE SAME. I love the Motown, Stax, and Philly Sounds, and I'm proud black people created all of them. Though I have to acknowledge the late great Linda Creed, a white Jewish woman. She wrote the lyrics to all of the Stylistics's hits.
@0812820 Hey man you are so right linda creed was one of the best song writers ever and when you paired her with tom bell it was just pure magic.i visted her grave a few years back and the words on the head stone say The Greatest Love of All.perfect words. peace.
@0812820 I see you too read the liner notes......great post! btw: I always thought that some of the best songwriters came out of the 60's and also, they happen to be of Eurpean ancestry-Burt Bacharach; The Carpenters; James Taylor; Carly Simon..and etc.
@0812820 U wrote "the late great Linda Creed, a white Jewish woman. She wrote the lyrics to all of the Stylistics's hits." Don't leave out that she worked with & collaborated with Thom Bell,a Black Jamaican Man',in all she wrote ,dear.
@0812820 One of my best friends worked with the late, great Linda Creed. I knew of her work but, in the age before the Great Media Explosion/Internet, I had never seen her. I happened to remark to my friend that I had no idea that she was white and he chuckled. He told me how nice she was to work with. May she RIP. And what a talent.....
Actually, the bulk of the Stylistics hits were released on Avco records, then H&L - though Thom Bell & Linda Creed wrote the best songs. Their first actual recordings for PIR (released on TSOP) came in the 80s, with production by the brilliant Dexter Wansel.
"By mistake I heard some news about you. I just turned my head and closed my ears, it hurt so bad. First, I tried to run. I paused a moment, just to catch my breath. And then I saw how big a fool I was..."
Those lyrics are so vivid. You could actually picture that scene in your head. Great song.
How about Philadelphia International, with the infamous Huff and Gamble. Can not forget Stax Records. I admit that MoTown does have a bigger following.
I deffinantly know that this song was recorded by Philadephia International, come on I was rasied listening to this, that is the reason why I mention the record comany. My responce was directed to tuzwol. He/she (tuzwol) mention that Motown set the standards for soul music in the 60's to the 90's, but mention that you can not forget other contributor's such as my personal fav Philadelphia International, and Stax Records. I think you misunderstood my responce.
This orchestration is so lush and mellow, it reminds me of "People Make the World Go 'Round'..(long play version). You really could get hypnotized by those beautifully blended voices...Um um um!!!
It is a real tragedy that this type of music does not get the airplay it so deserves. Kanks83...thanks for posting!
Where was this gem hiding all this time? Damm all these radio stations that play the same watery, thumping, monochromatic CRAP! Bless the smart producers who are revisiting the old school classics.....they know that Good shit is...and always will be... Damm Good!
this is classic music it is stepping music for those that dont know it is something that goes on in chicago stepping wish the young people could really understand what this music contributes to the world!!!
prohibitive cost??? maybe if these young kids could actually hear some real music it would sell today......of course radio wouldn't play it now (says alot for the state of radio today).....
the reason why this stuff isn't created any longer is for the simple reason that it takes too much time to make, and the cost of this production would be prohibitive as well. a whole real band! not just a keyboard player running string/horn patches with a drum machine...
I mean, nowadays, an R & B is hardly successful if a rapper isn't on it somewhere. It isn't really allowed to exist outside of the hip-hop industry, as it was able to dibble dabble in and still exist outside of, in the early 90's.
this is a beautiful song.... I didn't really appreciate these classics my mom used to play over and over...until the current generation of music came out... now I really value it, 'cause we don't have it no more.
Love This Song :-)

"By mistake I heard some news about you. I just turned my head and closed my ears, it hurt so bad. First, I tried to run. I paused a moment, just to catch my breath. And then I saw how big a fool I was..."
Those lyrics are so vivid. You could actually picture that scene in your head. Great song.

Indeed Motown set the standard for soul music for the 60s, and Philly set it for the 70s.

How about Philadelphia International, with the infamous Huff and Gamble. Can not forget Stax Records. I admit that MoTown does have a bigger following.

this was recorded at Philadelphia International.,the guy in the picture with his leg up is the producer, writer and arranger thom bell

Damm Good!

prohibitive cost??? maybe if these young kids could actually hear some real music it would sell today......of course radio wouldn't play it now (says alot for the state of radio today).....
dirtyedna 3 years ago
THIS IS THE ORIGINAL JOINT!
the reason why this stuff isn't created any longer is for the simple reason that it takes too much time to make, and the cost of this production would be prohibitive as well. a whole real band! not just a keyboard player running string/horn patches with a drum machine...
