Pop punk? Alkaline Trio is far from pop punk, maybe a handful of songs could be classed as pop punk but they're not, in general, a pop punk band. And emo? No.
Guys, it is possible to be both emo -and- pop-punk by their basic definitions. Anything can be "emo." Soul, R&B, Rock, Alternative, Pop-punk, punk. Emo simply implies emotional. It does not imply a musical style or finite chord progression.
You told me that you want to die. I said "I've been there myself more than a few times, and I go back every once in a while." You called me lucky, you called me lucky. You said "tonight is a wonderful night to die." Asked how you could tell. You told me to look at the sky. Look at all those stars. Look at how goddamn ugly the stars are.
You guys are fools! Emo is/was a trend. This is poetry with a rythym. Poetry has dealt with death and suicide for centuries . "To be, or not to be" is probably the most famous quotes of all time. Apparently William Shakespeare must of been an "emo" kid.
I fucking hate when people categorize bands, its so stupid. If you weren't a fake mother fucker you wouldn't have to do so, music is for the ears not the scene.
im sick of this ...ohhh pop punk...ohhh emo....WHO GIVES A GOOD GODDAMN!!!!!!!!its good fuckin music....listen and enjoy.....stop being such buttfuckers
@fukinpunx i know what u mean, good music is good music, i just recently found that out a couple of years ago. im probably the only black guy that likes this band, i just love good music whatever the genre may be
<3 this song.. although it doesnt have to be either a rope or a bottle.. there'a always slitting your wrists or over dosing.. or a bullet to the head.. dont go for the pills though..tried them myself, they just made me puke the whole day after.. sucked!...man i need to invest in a gun! much quicker and easier
i have a request for you i remember one of your vids saying if we have a request to post it or soemthing well my request is Message From Kathlene by Alkaline Trio
@punkCDsampler i dunno this is closer to punk than anything. songs like cringe and message from kathlene at least. they've definitely pop punked over the years tho.
@punkCDsampler yea, i never thought about classifying them as I started listening to them when they were more punk/ pop and have today someone heard they're music and said," wow that's so emo."
@punkCDsampler i kinda consider them moody-punk. i know it's not a real genre but they're kinda like the nekromantix. dark always. not really emo. emo branches from post-hardcore like thursday.
@punkCDsampler i dont see how they can be considered emo. theyve got a very punkish bassist, the vocalist doesnt sound emo at all, and the drums do classic punk d-beats. its gotta be pop-punk. not as if it really matters though.
Matt Skiba himself describes his music as similar to Social Distortion.
Wiki: "Alkaline Trio is part of a very large circle of Chicago punk/hardcore bands." McHenry, part of ChicagoLand Illinois, is his hometown, that's what people here sound like when they do hardcore punk, Matt was just Exceptional for not being Christian Rock.
@owl316 You know, emo sounded similar to this but AT had been around for so long I really don't think that they count, they are more melodic punk than anything. Although yes, they do walk a very fine line. I hate that I like them, I really do. But at least I don't like Taking Back Sunday.
I think This Addiction is a great album and that they are edging closer to the earlier stuff. A&I WAS a good album and it WAS a different style (as was crimson) but I still liked them. But I do prefer this style which is why I like this addiction because it is much more "closer" to this style than crimson / A&I was. I said "Style" alot there... prob cuz I have so much xD
i don't think it really bothers me that they took on a new sound, but that they took on a radio friendly sound. like they just made bad music, and people like bad music... i bet like most the people who actually listened to alkaline trio before a&i played an instrument... i know that's why i love the trio so much.
You people need to realize that this band has been around for 10+ years and they are going to change. Maybe Ill Catch Fire is my fav, but they cant stay that way forever. They have different lives now, and are still great musicians. They have never written a bad song, and if you dont like crimson or A&I then you dont appreciate them. Just shut the fuck up about it and listen to the music. lmao
Good Mourning was definitely when they started going downhill although it did have some great tracks like Continental & Blue In the Face. Their new album is definitely a step up from Crimson and A & I, although it sounds a little too "happy" and "commercial" for the trio. I still think Dead On the Floor is one of the best songs they have written though.
I don't know, I loved Good Mourning as much as their older albums... Goddammit is the only album I don't own, besides Crimson and A&I... This Addiction sounds okay, better than stuff on Crimson (Mercy Me rocks though...)
This song is brilliantly written. I think Skiba really captured the feeling of hopelessness that comes with severe depression and the contemplation of suicide.
thats not true, agony and irony wasnt a great album. all of their asian man stuff was amazing. they never made a not incredible song while signed onto asian man. as they went on their songs started getting less realistic and relatable which was the main mistake, along with losing some creativity. Goddamnit is a completly unrecreatable albumcuz of 1 how well alk3 worked with mike park, the owner of asian man records, and 2 that matt skiba had just finished tourig and his voice was a little raspy.
@DIYLobotomy96 Saying a band "cant" write a bad song is being incredibly naive. Almost all bands arent as good when they sign onto major record labels. For example when against me signed onto sire when they put out new wave, they sucked. Besides when did i say a band sucks when the style changes? You probably listen to alk3 primarily
@DIYLobotomy96 for the rhythm of the song while i listen to them for the lyrics mostly, and without saying the art of the lyrics got a lot worse. This Addiction i thought was a huge improvement to A&I. However i did think there was a few weak tracks on that album too, like eating me alive. idk if that album was better soley because they were trying to go back to their punk roots or simply because they went self labeled (kind of)
I've listened to the new album and all i've came up with is its just not as gritty anymore. You wouldn't find these lyrics on anthing new simply because as they changed so did they're music. I'm not fanboying it up but i love the new album in a different way. There will be moments in my life when im gonna want to listen to This Addiction but more othen that not im gonna be blasting Goddamnit out of my speakers. It's been 14 years, Trio try never to put out the same album twice. Don't bitch enjoy
they should stay with the current members, the sound is very tight and clean. derek is a beast, and dan and matt have always summed up my feelings exactly
Very well said, man. I too have had a long time love for the Trio. It's hard to get better than brilliance of Goddamnit and Good Mourning. This Addiction may be a little disappointing, but it's still awesome.
This one was my favorite in high school. I listened to it EVERY morning on the way to school with my brother, we both smoked Camel Lights and sang this song at the top of our lungs!!! Good times:)
Theres a difference between being a fan, and being a fanboy (blindly supporting anything they throw at you), a fan will constructively criticize, yet try to understand why they are changing, and simply stop buying albums they dont like. An annoying fanboy will like whatever they release, making sure everyone next to them knows they like the shitty over rated music they only like cause their friends do.
I hate seeing people trash "New" alkaline trio. It's all fucking them. Just shut the fuck up and enjoy the music. Agony & Iroyn is great, amybe not as great as some earlier stuff, but still great. Good mourning is what REALLY got them popular in the mainstream punk scene.
