I live in the New Orleans area. Like the video says, you have to see the neighborhoods first hand to see how bad they are even after nearly 2 years since the storm. One thing I don't like about the media coverage is the number of stories concentrating on the Lower 9th Ward. Many neighborhoods were just as devastated, including Lakeview and Gentilly. Right across from the Lower 9th Ward in St. Bernard Parish (County) in which which EVERY home in the parish sustained flood damage...EVERY house.
Right now, as I blog this, I am watching the Category 5 storm (like Katrina) approach Oman and Dubai. They have evidently taken head as to the danger, because I saw on the news where there were so many leaving at the airport.
I lived in NO about ten yrs ago, and could see this all coming even then. The local and state govt are given about a $100 million a year to maintain these levees and drainage systems, and it all goes right into the politician's pockets. Anyone who hasn't spent any time there (more than just a wks vacation) can't really understand, and those who've lived their whole lives there think its normal. Its like living in Columbia, the corruption runs so deep.

It was the Orleans Levee Board's responsibility to oversee the levees. I don't believe Bush sat on the Orleans Levee Board before Katrina hit, but plenty of wasteful Democrats were on the board, misspending critical funds that could've been used to repair and reinforce the levees. Facts are stubborn things.

That's incorrect. It's a rumor that the city flooded the parish of St. Bernard to save it during Hurricane Betsy; however, this is not true. And it wasn't for racial reasons either. St. Bernard was predominantly white.

I hope you understand that you can only move your asssssssssssesss IF, you have transportation or someone to give you a ride. Now once you arrive to another location, you need MONEY to pay for shelter unless you are in fact---in a shelter. There were many people who made it out of the storms path who ended up living in WalMart and Waffle House parking lots because they made it to Baton Rouge but couldn't afford or get in a motel room. It's not easy to leave just because you want to or need to.

It was the Orleans Levee Board's responsibility to oversee the levees. I don't believe Bush sat on the Orleans Levee Board before Katrina hit, but plenty of wasteful Democrats were on the board, misspending critical funds that could've been used to repair and reinforce the levees. Facts are stubborn things.
Search for "Is the Orleans Levee Board doing its job?" for a great NBC News exposé of this subject.

But New Orleans did get the hurricane, but the actual damage was from the levees breaking. If they hadn't New Orleans would have been fine.

Good thing you have no idea of the constitutional seperation of powers between the states and fed. government. Why don't you go take a civics and government course and learn why the only thing that coud be done was for money to be allocated to the local governments and at that point it is the local governments responsibility to distribute it. Not the Federal government. Not to mention the President cannot take over the National guard in peacetimes its the Governors job to do that.

i just got back from nawlins a month ago...there were so many factors that were against all of the people living in teh ninth ward. the levees broke because of all the pressure, it SHOULD have held...and the lower ninth ward is surrounded by not only the mississippi, but the lake, and by the gulf....

The handling of the crisis was a disgrace. Hundreds of locals were still in jails scattered all over the South, months later, who had never even been charged with any offence, cos all the paperwork was destroyed in a flooded basement. Many of them did not know what they were in jail for! Guilty of being poor in a divided society...

From Tampa FL, many of our surrounding areas are at or slightly above sea level, That area was the absolute WORST for that storm to hit. Its a tragedy that many people simply couldnt evacuate in time. My condolences to all the families affected. All of us in the south dread the "Big One" , and that was it. Sad.

You are correct. Hurricane Rita was the forgotten storm. Fires in FEMA trailers have been common with fatalities. My family lived in one for 8 months due to Katrina. I wish you well.

I was born and raised seven miles from new orleans. I lived in st.bernard parish, la the damage was a hell of a lot worse here than it was in orleans parish. I am so sick of new orleans always getting the limelight. What about the other places? What about mississippi? Screw N.O. It was a dangerous dirty place before the hurricane and its 20xs worse now!
