@kingofallsaiyans123 your right. I have always had tetras w/ my bettas. The betta I have now is very aggressive and killed half the tetras. He was removed to his own personal vase. I am planning to reintroduce tetras into the aquarium again hopefully he tolerates them. If he doesnt then back to the vase.
@CostsUp i think so. My mother said that no matter what fish she put with her betta (named "grouchy" lol :D) it killed EVERYTHING. I'm not experienced, but most people who say they've had bettas said they can keep them with other fish just fine.
i just got 8 tetras for my 10 gallon tank with my betta in it yesterday (i asked for 5 but he gaveme 8 -_-) i was nervous because whenever my betta sees his reflection he flares soo much. he loves them so much! its so adorable. when i first put him in i held my breath as he swam up to them and then he just stared, like he was fascinated. he then started swimming back and forth with them and now i think he thinks they are like his family. bettas are so misunderstood <3
They don't. I have two bettas, both of which were alone at first but then had fish added to their tanks (glowlight tetras in one case and a female guppy in the other). What they usually do is chase the newbies around for a day or so until they figure out that they aren't a threat to their territory. Now, my betta is best friends with the guppy even though they look similar. I have even kept a betta with male guppies and Dwarf Gouramis without a problem :)
I got a male Betta in 10 gal. tank with 5 zebra danios ,4 ghost shrimp and 5 cherry red shrimp. Betta tries to eat some of the lil shrimp but they just go under the gravel. Also got a 1 gal tank on my desk with a male Betta and 2 ghost shrimp and he doesn't pay them any attention.
@marko5588 Hm that would be risky. I would say a good tank mate for 5 gallons could be 2 African drawrf frogs, or maybe a couple ghost shrimp. Or a snail. But not all of those together
Male bettas can be kept with peaceful community tank fish that aren't fin nippers and don't have long fins (he might confuse them for another male betta). Right now I have a male betta living in a 5 gallon with two male platies and they get along great. :]
What kind of plants do you have there, besides java fern? Does this tank have a light built in?
I've always wanted to plant my little betta tank (which is in my garage currently) but the stumbling block always seems to be the lighting... the tank I have has a cruddy light. I've never done it for fear plants would just die in there.
I have a betta in a planted 10 gallon community tank - he loves it - he's so active! This tank is cute and lovely, too!

It all depends on the temperment of your fish. They're kinda like people; some are nice, some are just assholes. If you have an unusually territorial betta or a particularly fiesty batch of tetras, you may have problems.

Interesting. I didn't know that ick is only from America. What I do know that stress brings disease regardless of the country the fish is in. ANYTHING THAT MAKES RAPID MOVEMENTS WILL STRESS ANY BETTA OUT PERIOD! Stop trying to make up wierd ass rules like Platties "giving" external parasites to other fish.
WATERMOVEMENT KEEPS ALL FISH AWAKE SHORTENING LIFESPAN PERIOD!
incorrect but i would have thought the same thing. actually ich is already in north american water. the question is how strong is your fish and how healthy is their slime coat? you don't catch a cold from cold weather... you catch a virus from a person and the cold weather weakens your immune system giving the virus a chance to take over.
So putting mollies (with or without ich) with your betta will stress him out, weaken him, and make him susceptible to ich.
Stress might cause ich, but you could still lower the chance of a stressed fish catching ich by killing off the parasites. Higher temp w/enough aeration or some kind of medication that I've never tried lol
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well your 2nd statement is completely irrelevant to your 1st. Your 1st statement remains 100% incorrect. It's impossible for one fish to spread ich to another fish. They're already IN the water in much larger numbers than they could ever appear on the fish. So my tank is full of ich but none of my fish have ich... by putting a fish with ich in my tank I'm in no way increasing the chances of any of my unaffected fish getting ich. Your 2nd statement basically agrees with and adds to mine... LMAO
Wtf are you smoking? I don't even know what my "1st" and "2nd" statement even is. You tell me that my 2nd one is irrelevant, and then you tell me that the exact same statement agrees with yours?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Oh and another common mistake is to think ich can't survive in higher temperatures. Ich can easily survive in 85 degree water... Only if the temp. change is gradual... If your water is 72 and you SUDDENLY change it to 74 you may kill your ich but if it's a sensitive fish it may get stressed and get it right back. None of my fish have ever showed distress from a 2 degree temp change (except snails sometimes climb out) but I often try a little aquarisol 4 external problems. noxich is good too!
I really feel bad for your fish if you think ich is only spread through water. Even if a fish has a good slime coat ich CAN spread from one species of fish to another. I have a 30G tall, a 20G tall, two 10g, and a 250 marine tank. The mistake people make is putting fish in right away instead of keeping them in a quarantine tank for at least two weeks to make sure everything is in order. Please please please read up on ich and how it affects fish and how it spreads.
You are unfucking believable. If you have a clean tank, ick free, and you introduce fish from another tank that HAVE ICK, guess what happens? The ick can spread from the fish you introduced in the tank to the rest of the fish that were already in the tank ICK FREE.
Christ almighty you're an arrogant stubborn bastard. Ick isn't always present in water, regardless of what you think. It is entirely possible to have an ick free tank and have ick introduced by new fish you twit.
I'm aware ick is a tress enduced parasite. But what you and the other idiot fail to take into account is this: In a tank with no ick. IE: A tank that is ick free (just so we're fucking clear here) ick cannot spread. Why? Because there is no fucking ick. If you introduce a fish without proper quarantine procedures that HAS ICK you reintroduce the ick to the tank that can spread to the fish already in the tank that ARE ICK FREE. What is so fucking hard to grasp about this concept? Christ.
@cyrix522 i know this is a year old, but you do know that the fact that ich is a stress induced parasite does mean something right? a fish that has been quarantined in a stable envirement will not stress enough to the point of allowing ich to host it. also, ich is almost always present in the water and the fish, the white dots are the ich when it is in its feeding stages. but as an egg, larvae, dead parasite, etc. It is practically invisible.
I was kind of under the impression that these other people were that there is no such thing as "ich free". Not 100% sure on this one but from what I read, it is present in the water all the time but only becomes a problem when the fish are stressed and therefore weak (I.E. when the tank gets very dirty, the fish are moved or something else happens to stress them). When they are not stressed, their immune system can fight it off but when they stress, ich gets in and white spots start.
Or should I just assume that you think a parasite can magically manifest itself through sheer will power in a tank that's devoid of it? Is that what you think? Because the only way you can disagree with what I, or anyone else (aside from spitrhyma) have said so far. None of us have ever objected to how icks ability to spread or how it does so. We however have all stated a very clear concept that anyone with a tank (and I own several) can attest to. It's common Aquariust knowledge.
You can have a filter with out too much water flow. Read about it, think about it. Hell get a smaller filter and ad some plants. Java moss is easy to care for and really helps a lot.
Show me the empirical evidence you punk bitch. You have no data to back up your claim..... I do have the data to back up my statement.. I guess you'll always be some loser twat, that's evident......
I want to add a betta to my tetra tank but im worried for the poor sucker that's subjected to 11 aggressive neons and 3 rasboras. They'd nip his long flowy fins to shreds :(
also, how does the betta get any food? my tetras are freaking fast
Kareem if you decided against adding a betta to a community filtered tank I applaud you.
If you wanna fuck with rummy nosetetras it's going to take your maintenance requirements from about a 1.2 to a 8.0
Some sort of plant/moss/algae needs to be present in your tank to absorb the SLIGHTEST ammounts of nitrate. Waterchanges may very easily not be enough. If you can have plants the plants should filter the tank enough. Otherwise algae must grow and your pleco won't let that. Also use R.O.!
Maintenance requirements are about the same actually. I use purigen and a crapload of plants so organic matter rarely has a chance to become nitrates and any that makes it through is immediately taken up by the plants.
I am not 'fucking' with rummynose tetras. I am keeping them and they are very happy, their noses bright red all the time. I don't need R.O as the tap water here is very soft and pH neutral (which quickly turns acidic with the driftwood and CO2 in my tank)
The only thing is tap water is rarely consistant.
If you have something your tank lowers the pH even MORE than the tap water already is than it's also going to cause problems during big water changes or gravel vacs
I'm trying to say in order to keep a pleco and betta happy, you need very little maintenance and NO plants. assuming that's what the situation is, you're going to go from like 1.2 to a 8.0 OR some form of plant or moss must be present.
Tap water generally passes through rock. You're lucky to be so close to the source that your water is still low in pH but keep in mind it isn't going to be CONSISTANT.
bettas love plants and in fact if they don't have plants they'll get stressed andf lose their color and weaken their immune systems. (p.s.- in the wild bettas live in heavly vegetated waters.)
LoL So you DO know that they love plants you just have no idea why.
Again your proving my point... bettas NEED still water. The plants are the cure for the itch.
I realize they PHYSICALLY need plants even when their water is still. In fact I'm pretty sure you copy and pasted that from one of my previous comments. But the most important benefit of the plants/decorations is to give the fish shelter when it rains and the water can't be still.
interesting tank,i used to have a beta {he died of old age, sadly} he used to nip the other fishes fins until the tank got infested with these harmless little white worms.the beta stopped nipping fins and started hunting worms,a good source of protein for all the fish and kept the beta occupied,i strongly reccomend purposly infesting your tank with an endless supply of live bait. and if you change your mind any anti-parasite medication will get rid of them for good.
i didn't say they were parasites, does learning that anti parasite treatments can kill you're shrimp make them instantly mutate into bloodthirsty parasites? granted i forgot to tell you that that they were harmless bottom feeders, but still......don't be so quick to assume the worst about random commentors.
at the mo, i have 5 cardinal tetras, and would love to focus on a male betta and 3 females, but want normal fish aswell. answer?= community tank, which with a betta, isnt 100% certain it wil work. i love diamond tetras, guppys, blue rams and rummy nosed tetras. i have a 53 litre tank and is looking for a good set up, including my cardinals, some of the fish ive listed, and 1 male betta, and 3 females. can any1 help? x chloe x

Nice tank! You have a very nice betta too, he seems happy with the tetra in there. I just recently got 2 betta males and they each have their own 5 gallon eclipse hex. I thought they looked a little bored or lonely and brought home some neon tetra today for both of their tanks. They're very happy with their new pals.
No, bettas (siamese fighting fish) won't hurt other species. The reason why they get the name is because if two male bettas are put in the same tank they will fight each other to the death.
i have an eclipse 12 and an eclipse 3, and they're both great systems. just count on having to get your own heater, and everything else's covered. plus, they look really slick and compact with no tubes or wires hanging out. i've had the 12 for almost a decade now, and it's never given me a moment's trouble. definately recommended.
Bettas shouldnt attack tetras, they tend to attack themselves (males do) or bright shiny things, tetras are bright but they usually are safe, i had neon tetras with both female and male bettas and they got along fine. Dont keep a female molly with a male betta ha-ha i learned that the hard way!
you can also tell if he has dropsy if you look at him from above and his scales are sticking out like a pine cone if this is true then go get him some medicine but im sorry to say he will probably die
hey you betta is constipated or it has dropsy you need to not feed him for a day the give him a sinked pea soaked in water if he dosent get less fat then he has dropsy
betta's are nice fish very beautiful and a good challenge for beginners i recently had a male and a female in a one gallon. but there was alot of fin nibbling goin' on by the female so i moved on to a 10 gallon and well i want to introduce some new females soon do you think that's a good idea?
love your betta, its huge! was thinking about getting myself a betta for a 5.5 gallon that i have, im assuming it gets along with the tetras, i have a few serpae tetras in there right now
are those plants real?

ANYTHING THAT MAKES RAPID MOVEMENTS WILL STRESS ANY BETTA OUT PERIOD! Stop trying to make up wierd ass rules like Platties "giving" external parasites to other fish.
WATERMOVEMENT KEEPS ALL FISH AWAKE SHORTENING LIFESPAN PERIOD!
SpitRhyma 2 years ago
if mollies have ich and are put in the same tank as a betta, the ich CAN spread to the betta...
irbenson 2 years ago 2
incorrect but i would have thought the same thing. actually ich is already in north american water. the question is how strong is your fish and how healthy is their slime coat? you don't catch a cold from cold weather... you catch a virus from a person and the cold weather weakens your immune system giving the virus a chance to take over.
So putting mollies (with or without ich) with your betta will stress him out, weaken him, and make him susceptible to ich.
STRESS causes ich
SpitRhyma 2 years ago
Stress might cause ich, but you could still lower the chance of a stressed fish catching ich by killing off the parasites. Higher temp w/enough aeration or some kind of medication that I've never tried lol

LMAO
SpitRhyma 2 years ago
Wtf are you smoking? I don't even know what my "1st" and "2nd" statement even is. You tell me that my 2nd one is irrelevant, and then you tell me that the exact same statement agrees with yours?

Oh and another common mistake is to think ich can't survive in higher temperatures. Ich can easily survive in 85 degree water... Only if the temp. change is gradual... If your water is 72 and you SUDDENLY change it to 74 you may kill your ich but if it's a sensitive fish it may get stressed and get it right back. None of my fish have ever showed distress from a 2 degree temp change (except snails sometimes climb out) but I often try a little aquarisol 4 external problems. noxich is good too!
SpitRhyma 2 years ago
I really feel bad for your fish if you think ich is only spread through water. Even if a fish has a good slime coat ich CAN spread from one species of fish to another. I have a 30G tall, a 20G tall, two 10g, and a 250 marine tank. The mistake people make is putting fish in right away instead of keeping them in a quarantine tank for at least two weeks to make sure everything is in order. Please please please read up on ich and how it affects fish and how it spreads.

I feel bad for you... LMAO
THE ICK IS ALREADY IN THE WATER YOU IDIOT! It clings on to stressed fish.
If a fish'es stress coat is fucked up it's going to get ick regaurdless of it's tankmate's conditions.
Wow some people are really retarded with their little forum research.
SpitRhyma 2 years ago
You are unfucking believable. If you have a clean tank, ick free, and you introduce fish from another tank that HAVE ICK, guess what happens? The ick can spread from the fish you introduced in the tank to the rest of the fish that were already in the tank ICK FREE.
Christ almighty you're an arrogant stubborn bastard. Ick isn't always present in water, regardless of what you think. It is entirely possible to have an ick free tank and have ick introduced by new fish you twit.

u dumb shit ick is a stress enduced parisite most of the time and ick dosent always spread man ur stupid hav u ever had fish even???
skitllesman98 2 years ago
I'm aware ick is a tress enduced parasite. But what you and the other idiot fail to take into account is this: In a tank with no ick. IE: A tank that is ick free (just so we're fucking clear here) ick cannot spread. Why? Because there is no fucking ick. If you introduce a fish without proper quarantine procedures that HAS ICK you reintroduce the ick to the tank that can spread to the fish already in the tank that ARE ICK FREE. What is so fucking hard to grasp about this concept? Christ.
cyrix522 2 years ago 11
@cyrix522 i know this is a year old, but you do know that the fact that ich is a stress induced parasite does mean something right? a fish that has been quarantined in a stable envirement will not stress enough to the point of allowing ich to host it. also, ich is almost always present in the water and the fish, the white dots are the ich when it is in its feeding stages. but as an egg, larvae, dead parasite, etc. It is practically invisible.
Supertasticaquatics 1 year ago
@cyrix522
Yardjass 1 year ago
@cyrix522 so you're saying that if you stress a fish out, it will develop ick, even in an ick free tank, and the ick will spread, right?
LOL JK
warofthewalruses 2 months ago

7jako7 3 years ago
I want to add a betta to my tetra tank but im worried for the poor sucker that's subjected to 11 aggressive neons and 3 rasboras. They'd nip his long flowy fins to shreds :(
also, how does the betta get any food? my tetras are freaking fast
kareemhalfawi 3 years ago
its a plec not a suker and nothing will kill them theyre indistructable
7jako7 3 years ago
I was referring to the betta not the pleco.
I decided to pass on getting a betta though, they're too picky for my liking, i got some rummynoses :)
kareemhalfawi 3 years ago
kwl soz my bad, gr8 idea bout rummynoses im gerrin sum of den 4 ma new tank
7jako7 3 years ago
Kareem if you decided against adding a betta to a community filtered tank I applaud you.
If you wanna fuck with rummy nosetetras it's going to take your maintenance requirements from about a 1.2 to a 8.0
Some sort of plant/moss/algae needs to be present in your tank to absorb the SLIGHTEST ammounts of nitrate. Waterchanges may very easily not be enough. If you can have plants the plants should filter the tank enough. Otherwise algae must grow and your pleco won't let that. Also use R.O.!
SpitRhyma 3 years ago
Maintenance requirements are about the same actually. I use purigen and a crapload of plants so organic matter rarely has a chance to become nitrates and any that makes it through is immediately taken up by the plants.
I am not 'fucking' with rummynose tetras. I am keeping them and they are very happy, their noses bright red all the time. I don't need R.O as the tap water here is very soft and pH neutral (which quickly turns acidic with the driftwood and CO2 in my tank)
kareemhalfawi 3 years ago
thanks for confirming everything i just said.
The only thing is tap water is rarely consistant.
If you have something your tank lowers the pH even MORE than the tap water already is than it's also going to cause problems during big water changes or gravel vacs
SpitRhyma 3 years ago
Glad your satisfied with my response
Guess my maintenance level was already at an 8 with just neons :)
Fishkeeping is a very good stress reliever I find, so i play with my tank whenever i get the chance to
kareemhalfawi 3 years ago
Wow you're really not speaking my language.

It seems you're not even reading your own comments...
I eschewed bringing a betta in, in favour of some rummynoses. Pleco? where did that come from? I hate plecos.
kareemhalfawi 3 years ago
bettas love plants and in fact if they don't have plants they'll get stressed andf lose their color and weaken their immune systems. (p.s.- in the wild bettas live in heavly vegetated waters.)
shadowangels27 2 years ago
LoL So you DO know that they love plants you just have no idea why.
Again your proving my point... bettas NEED still water. The plants are the cure for the itch.
I realize they PHYSICALLY need plants even when their water is still. In fact I'm pretty sure you copy and pasted that from one of my previous comments. But the most important benefit of the plants/decorations is to give the fish shelter when it rains and the water can't be still.
SpitRhyma 2 years ago
spitrhyma2, you're an idiot. A betta is fine in most community tanks and a little water current is no problem.

hey im looking to do the same kind of thing, tetras with a betta, and some plants. how much lighting do u have, and do u add any co2?

interesting tank,i used to have a beta {he died of old age, sadly} he used to nip the other fishes fins until the tank got infested with these harmless little white worms.the beta stopped nipping fins and started hunting worms,a good source of protein for all the fish and kept the beta occupied,i strongly reccomend purposly infesting your tank with an endless supply of live bait. and if you change your mind any anti-parasite medication will get rid of them for good.
hydraloveingman1 3 years ago
yeah.. but thats not really good for the infested fish
203495203495 3 years ago
i didn't say they were parasites, does learning that anti parasite treatments can kill you're shrimp make them instantly mutate into bloodthirsty parasites? granted i forgot to tell you that that they were harmless bottom feeders, but still......don't be so quick to assume the worst about random commentors.

Nice tank! You have a very nice betta too, he seems happy with the tetra in there. I just recently got 2 betta males and they each have their own 5 gallon eclipse hex. I thought they looked a little bored or lonely and brought home some neon tetra today for both of their tanks. They're very happy with their new pals.
Tsukimaru07 3 years ago
He doesn't hurt the tetras?
laurajdahl 3 years ago
No, bettas (siamese fighting fish) won't hurt other species. The reason why they get the name is because if two male bettas are put in the same tank they will fight each other to the death.

do you like it?
CrimsonBlush 3 years ago
i have an eclipse 12 and an eclipse 3, and they're both great systems. just count on having to get your own heater, and everything else's covered. plus, they look really slick and compact with no tubes or wires hanging out. i've had the 12 for almost a decade now, and it's never given me a moment's trouble. definately recommended.
JMCraig 3 years ago
Bettas shouldnt attack tetras, they tend to attack themselves (males do) or bright shiny things, tetras are bright but they usually are safe, i had neon tetras with both female and male bettas and they got along fine. Dont keep a female molly with a male betta ha-ha i learned that the hard way!

bettas go great in community tanks he might pick at your crayfish when hes molting tho.

Lol, You've got to be kidding. He's fine, and looks very healthy. He does not have dropsy, it's obvious.
f2k031, your betta looks fine. Some bettas are just a little bulkier.

hey you betta is constipated or it has dropsy you need to not feed him for a day the give him a sinked pea soaked in water if he dosent get less fat then he has dropsy
