It's funny, I've heard this song performed by other artists. I looked up the lyrics and every page I found that specified the Pogues version says "sweetness from the bleachner". There were people trying very hard to figure out what "bleachner" means, and not having any luck. So I decided to check out the Pogues version for myself, and sure enough, he says the same thing that all the other songs say, "sweeter stronger decenter". Apparently none of them acutally listened to the song themselves.

It seems to me that the lines about being pressed by the English to fight the French are from a Napoleonic War setting. with most of Europe under Napoleon's control, "bold" and "French" were a very suitable combination. I take it as extra confirmation that the place they were being sent to fight in was Portugal and Spain. When the British were starting to make traction and beginning to win some victories on land it was in the Peninsular campaigns of Iberia.
