I think Poulter has a negative attack with his driver. To compensate for the outward (in to out) that comes along with the downward he MUST rotate the direction of his swing slightly to the left. This imo give his swing the laid off appearance. If this does not make sense do some research on the D-plane.

It appears laid off relative to the target line, but it is very nicely on plane relative to his plane line which happens to be rotated ever so slightly left of the target line.
