  • I would like to see a review on camping/hiking backpacks.

  • As a note. I stored one of these on my snowmobile all winter inside a pouch with my multi-tool and flashlight. The firesteel developed 'mold' that ate away at the rod. Still works, but I had not expected the moisture to eat it up the way it did.

  • Others have already said it but it bears repeating. Hold the striker firm and pull the ferro rod away from the striker. Don't bare down so hard. That ferro rod you used should have sent maya dust up in flames the very first strike if used correctly and if the dust wasn't moist.

  • So embarassing, I have one of those models and I will be damned if I can light a fire with it. I tried it on dry leaves, old mans beard which usually goes up well and some other stuff when in the mountains. When I got back I tried it on some newspaper and some bathroom tissue. Couldnt get that to work either.

  • Rudolf, you can light my fire any time you want. But be very gentle with the striker.

  • @peaksurvival your supposed to strike faster and not with as much pressure...the way you do it is just wasting the fire steel because your just grinding in off

  • this person has no idea how to use a fire steel

  • @SuperCoolguy98 Looks like she did pretty well to me

  • Swedish is spelled with one e only!

  • @RIPPER95D Hi,You worded your comment better than my sarcastic one!

  • Stay in the kitchen next to the oven before you hurt yourself honey :)

  • Sweeeeeeeeeeeeedish Fire Steeeeeeeeeeeeel,EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEXCELLENT!

  • thats not how you use the firesteel striker

  • Hint: Keep the striker stationary very close to the tinder and pull the rod away. This method works alot better and doesn't throw your tinder all over the place on a hard stroke. Remember, the rod gets pulled against the stationary striker, not the way it is displayed in this vid. Neither way is right or wrong but my way is alot easier and way more precise.

  • @GLOCKCOPG23 im sorry but could you explain to me how you are throwing your tinder all over the place, not trying to hate i just dont get what you mean.

  • @TheCarbonSnake If you push hard down on the striker, you can easily use too much force causing your hand/ferro rod to go into your tinder and throw it all over. If you keep the striker stationary and pull the ferro rod away from the tinder, you don't risk messing up your tinder pile with a stroke that is too forceful. In summary, don't move the striker, move the rod.

  • @GLOCKCOPG23 Thanks i understand now :)

  • Hi,

Why chinese fire starter comes in 2 pieces stick together(Magnesium/flint) both make sparks.???..because in your vid it seems to be in 1 piece stick. I'm lost can you help me? thx

  • she strikes the steel like she hasn't done anything with her hands before.

  • @TheDudelikeCrackers

Yes. It looked feeble. Notice her right index finger afterwards; holding it in a curled position. Covered in powder? Burned?

  • What is better , gerber bear grylls fire starter or light my fire Sweedish fire steel Army ?

  • @enriquelabiano swedish firestell defo

  • Canteengearshop.webs.com

We sell a less expensive version on the light my fire 2.0 for only 5.99

    Red

    Yellow

    Black

    Green

  • What an adorable hat. :B

  • is this made of flint or magnesium

  • @Timespartan111 Ferroseum. It's an alloy of eleven metals. I hope this helped! :)

  • I lighted my fire today with one stroke on the Mini you´re showing here. Used machinedryer lint, and it worked incredible well! Recomended as a cheap (free) alternative to Maya dust.

  • Best ferro rod is way better. Get the 1/2" x 12" rod.

    Leaves this for dead.

  • I jus bought a dozen on ebay for less than 20 bucks and they work great!!!!

  • you can light my fire

  • The army one, whats the price and where do i get it?

  • do you need to be 18 to get one or any age

  • @mking201

    U can be any age

  • I bought the Scout because of your video, Thank you so much. I too fell for the cheap version and after buying the Scout I will never go back.

  • your not using it right.

  • you spellt swedish wrong

  • You did not capitalise the opening word in your sentance; you also spelt, "spellt" incorrectly. There is no capitalisation in the countries name and no full stop and the end of your sentance. How about you check your English before you go trolling someone else on here?

  • @bikenutter1 my back-space is jammin a bit and im not readin trough my comment before posting and by the way its you thats trollin me now :P

  • use the back of the knive :)

i can also make a fire with the maya dust. When is she gonna use natural tinder?

  • When you use a knife, the sparks come out MUCH hotter.

  • It is actually "Swedish" but the English translation is "sweedish".

  • This sold me. I was just about to order a $2 one off EBay. Thanks for the help.

  • sweedish? If I am correct that is an incorrect way of spelling that.

  • What an awesome teacher... knowledgable, enthusiastic and a winning smile! Thank you for the vid.

  • Edit: YOU SEEM TO BE knowledgeable most of the time....sorry

  • those light my fire scout/thin ones snap after not much use in my experience.

had a few. the 'army'/thicker ones last ages though.

  • just a tip, when trying to get sparks hold the metal peice and pull back on the rod so that if you miss it will not throw your tinder all over the place.

  • Glad to see you're getting a lot of sponsors, you're seem knowledgeable most of the time (poor rabbit "experts" choice IMHO), and I ABSOLUTELY love the way you explain stuff, always with that gorgeous smile upon your face. Greeting from Argentina beautifull ;)

  • i could never ignite a fire using that swedish fire steel. don't buy it.

i spent hours with all kind of natural bone dry tinder, the sparks were huge.

I don't have maya dust or cotton balls when I am out in the woods.

Don't rely on that buy a bic lighter instead.

  • Pfft, I've never had a problem with the $5 magnesium blocks...

  • 0:20 thats what she said

  • It is acualy easier to use the back of your knife blade, gives more power to it...

    Great invention, works in - 42C :-)

  • @MrPrevailer your comment was as if someone was screeching a chalk board with their finger nails... agonizing. fyl.

  • You can buy decent firesteels off of ebay for 1USD shipped that are comparable to these.

  • that is so true u will go thru alot of matches especially if they arent waterproof or it is short so u have to be quick and on average for me to light any kindling/tindner it takes 1-4 strikes with many variables

  • what the fuck !! get back into the kitchen and make me a sandwich?

    unless youre a butch lesbian...

  • Great video..its nice when girl is in survival, now i know that my girlfiriend isn't alone in girl survival xD

    btw,i hear thet you are frozen,and cameran's hands are shaking,freeeeeeezed :D

    zz :)

  • A little hint for you. Try dryer lint for your starter. Works like a charm.

  • @utubeworms this method really doesn't work like a charm, it depends highly on proper conditions.. IMHO in winter or in a downpour dryer lint is useless, doesn't hold a flame long and you have to pack a lot more then say vas/paraffin waxed cotton balls.(which btw hold a flame for a long time.) so, scratch that idea right away, unless of course, it being the only one available at the time. which of course( if your packing the right stuff, you wont need to fall back on this.)

  • These things are great. I also like the Coghlans Magnesium block and Steel, have lit many fires in adverse weather conditions, as the magnesium burns at around 3,100*C so I've even been able to light-up in complete downpours in November (cold in Canada), just take your time, get fair amount of Mg shavings and stay over top of your tinder bundle and Mg shavings until a decent flame is going. Keep the rain off the fire until you are confident its self-sustaining, whether you use Mg Steel or L.M.F.

  • i have the mini

  • its safer if you pull the steel away instead of the striker.. wont hit the tinder pile and if there was a shapr stick hand going down not always the best idea..

  • have you been able to test (approximately) the number of strikes yielded vs the claimed number?

    thanks!

  • nice vid

  • are these fire steel better than the doan magnesium fire starter?

  • All firesteel rods in the World are exactly the same because only one Chineese manufacturer makes them and they supply every company that allegedly makes ferrocerium rods in their facilities. All that is different between manufacturers is the handle design. Saying that one ferrocerium rod is better than the other is ridiculous and claim made without any research.

  • anyone have opinions about the "moose firesteel"? seems to give out huge sparks compared to the light my fire ones

    Thanks.

  • god! light my fires suck but everybody has them!!!

  • u are awesome im planning on buying one

  • These things are in fact the BOMB. best firestarters. I carry these all the time. put the mini in your emergency kits and use the bigger ones for more constant usage, in your pack or as apart of your EDC set up.

  • These things are in fact the BOMB. best firestarters. I carry these all the time.

  • I did not have that good of luck with maya dust. I couldent get it to light with steel. now fire fixins and tampons have been much more effective.

  • Expensive though. There are much less expensive firesteels out there!

  • try the ust strike force works much better and i have used both many times but the strike force has extra features

  • you should not press so hard when u strike turn the striker on an angle and pull back on the ferro rod it will be more effective

  • 1) you spelled Swedish wrong

    2) you don't have to push down quite that hard

    3) don't angle it so that it's almost straight up, it should be almost horizontal

    4) push it all the way down to the tip to get better sparks

  • you dont have to use it that hard

  • Thanks for this video. I have several of these. I need to purchase the larger Army model. Anthony.

  • @desertfox421 the mag bars are a good tool but its ur opion if u want 2 by a fire steel

  • great video im new to bushcrafting and have purchased a magnesium fire starter is this a good tool or should i invest in firesteel?

  • @DesertFox421 Firesteel is much better, the magnesium will chip away quickly or eventually break off

  • Sometimes it works a little better to pull your fire stick up away from your striking steel. Rather than striking down with the striking steel, thus you avoid accidently spreading out your tinder as you did with your first strike. Just a tip to share, love your work keep up the great vids.

  • I have heard many claims about LMF and it's better quality. Even claims that it works when wet. Could you do a video showing that it works when wet?

  • What is the black paint/coating's purpose on the firesteel when you buy a new one?

  • Always carry THREE ways to start a fire. This version is no better then these. I have any from 3$ to 16$. They all do the same just you have to be consistant. The strike that comes with this is what makes more a differance. Try it your like it.

    cheers

  • Can anyone tell me what the black coating's purpose is on the firsteel?

  • I have one of the LMF super sporks. Love that thing. So handy. I also have the scout fire steel. I have a question though. I was told by several survival enthusiasts you are always supposed to pull up on the firesteel, not push down on the blade. What are your thoughts on that?

  • When you're stating the length are those lengths of rods or the lengths with handles?

  • IMO maya sticks and dust are unnecessary. Cotton balls are cheaper and work much better. When soaked in petroleum jelly they will burn for up to five minutes on there own, maybe more. Thanks for the video!

  • just a tip. the fire steel don´t go well with salt water. so make sure you keep it protected if you are close to the sea.

  • I would recommend firesteels from goingprepared's channel. Check out his channel and watch his videos on the firesteels that he sells.

  • I'd stay away from coghlans fire steel. It will fall apart on you.

  • I had shitty copy of this made by company Mil-tec.

  • Just a minor issue but it's "Swedish" not "Sweedish" :) Great videos though!

I've had one of these Army variations for the last few years and it's quite the ugly thing now (what with use and all) but it still going strong and I expect it to last for a few more years before I need a replacement. The only thing to note about these things is that you need a little practice to handle it. Since it's not giving out fire but rather sparks, so you need something really dry to catch those sparks on.

  • hi... I'm planning a world tour of 1.5 year and I was looking for some reliable way to have some fire if I'm in some kind of trouble... we never know I guess... your fire starter seems to work quite well... I didn't know about it, just about magnesium blocks... I'm thinking about getting both actually so I can ignite the magnesium... thanks... great vid...

  • Dude, if yo want trully reliable backup, consider firesteel coupled with magnesium block, i think its US army issue. magnesium shawings are lit via sparks from firesteel, burns white hot . Do not buy cheap copies, i actually had one, and "magnesium block" was made of alluminium, which does not works.

  • Employee recognition and 500 more subscribers in four weeks...

    Selica's on fire! ;)

  • I use the Army (full size) version and it works GREAT and is a great bang for the buck. With proper tinder I find it to work much easier than a Magnesium block. It works the first strike, every strike, wet or dry, cold or hot and with a large volume of super hot sparks. I use it with a cotton ball soaked with wax and it takes less than 1 full stroke to ignite the tinder that will burn for 5 mins plus. You need a LMF Fire Steel in your kit for survival, BOB or camping.

  • where is your school and how can i get info on it??thanx

  • Just ordered one. Thanks!

  • I prefer to shave some magnesium on my rod into the tinder and strike it. Perhaps mine made from a different brand.

Test without tinder, shave some magnesieum "powder" and strike them, you will have like a burst kinda.

Tip 1: Don't forget to protect the tinder of the wind

Tip 2: put your rod as vertical as possible to not rip off and throw the tinder away

Tip 3: practice to learn how it works, it seems easy and required some force but you'll learn a smooth way with less force by training.

  • A trick I learned from my fellow bushcrafting YouTubers is to hold the striker fixed at the medium and pull up on the rod. This reversal of motion prevents scattering the medium.

  • I really like Light My Fire fire steel. I use it to like my trangia stove. Just like for medium, hold the striker at the mouth of trangia and pull up on the rod. Make sure to pull, because if you push, you'll spill the fuel and even break the trangia.

I like this better than matches or lighters because I don't have to stick burning thing into trangia and burn my hand.

  • @BrokenAeroVT mate u are a bleeding genius thank you

  • @dovlino You're welcome. Sweet trick I learned from YouTubing bushcrafters!

  • Light my fire rods are a great product. My first one i had broke right in the middle and i emailed the company and the even sent me a new one for FREE! What a great company. 5 out of 5.

  • i got 5 enen one in my wallet lol

  • Anther Great Video... Thanks

  • I find it helps to keep the striker in place while moving the rod. Good video.

  • @ raphallusek

The reason this can be better than a lighter is because it doesn't run out of fuel.

  • Good tool, veru useful, but why not to take a simple jet lighter. It takes the same space (or even less), it's waterproof - just shake it and it will work. And it's more universal, You can point the flame while the hot sparks goes everywhere in the random direction (on Your leg, tent if too close..)

  • @raphallusek the reason for this over a jet lighter or any other lighter is lighters have parts that can fail and they can run out of fuel when you need them to work. A flint type lighter doesn't run into any of those surprise problems.

  • Redundancy is important. It's good to have a lighter and possibly some matches too but both could fail and matches could be negated by conditions. The FS is a great complement to other fire sources and a confidence booster when you're in the field.

  • great video, nice product, and great smile, :D

  • Thank you.

  • Hi selica great vid again. I would like to recomend to your subscribers to but the bigger Army version the other will wear down and break to easy.

  • I'm a new subscriber to this channel and I love it, Miss PeakSurvival you seem very knowledgeable and you have such a wonderful and Up-Beat personality that your videos are a joy to watch.

  • @ArgosSmith2009 not to mention she also very HOT>>>

  • @BIGBADWOLF89ST u no it

  • nicely done, thanks for sharing!

  • I just got a Moose Firesteel - Misch Metal Ferro Rod Blank - 1/2" x 5" and it is AWESOME! It aint cheap, but it is SO worth it. Look into it before spending your money.

  • Good video.. thanks. I suggest that people practice with various materials they can find around their area.. one can't always rely on having produced kindling on hand. Try things like dried/dead grasses and leaves, cat tails work great if you break them apart and use the cotton like material.

  • Great info. Thanks.

  • 1:02 what happened to your finger? anyways yeah these things are awesome, mine came in the mail today and i love it, i lit a paper towel on fire

  • when you use the striker allot it sometimes leaves a residue from the sparks it just wipes off.

  • The swedish firesteels are great by LMF. I agree with the "sucks" assessment of the blastmatch in regards to moving parts can break. I used the blast match as a regular fire steel by scraping it with my knife. I wound up breaking the rod out of it's housing and ruined the unit. I still use the rod as a traditional firesteel. The strike force is a dream in MHO. The blast match is a simple one handed option but it is flimsy. 5*

  • cool

  • The blast match sucks!

  • watch another person operate it, and then try it, or read instructions. I watched your attempt and was disheartened with your lack of gusto, that is required.

My concern with blast match is the moving parts. Moving parts break.

  • haha she beats you hand down Demcad :)

  • thanks

  • Nice video I love my swedish army fire steel but somtimes I just cant get a fire with it so I carry matches with me and sometimes a lighter thanks for the video.

  • @Mohoboson241 get some cotton balls and smear them with petroleum jelly, or check out some videos about it on you tube, the petro jelly provides a degree of waterproofing to the cotton wool(which lights up easily on it's own anyway) but also causes the wool to burn for a few minutes giving a nice long time to get kindling burning, as the cotton and petro jelly will now both act as fuels, and both are cheap and useful for other things too

  • Thank you!
