Not quite, the original was Jan & Dean, and was recorded on their Dead Man's Curve/New Girl In School LP from early 1964. The song was basically a rework of "Jenny Lee". No surprise that "The Who" covered it, as Keith Moon was a huge Jan & Dean fan.
