The overcommercialization of music means that songs are churned out in a cookie cutter fashion, without any deep meaning or musical capacity.

Just look at all the white-washed rock produced between 1959 and 1964. Most of it is shit. Also, The Beach Boys didn't write all their own music. Hell, this very song was co-written by Tony Asher, who was a professional lyricist and wrote most of the lyrics on Pet Sounds. Still, there's a lot of great pop being made today as well.

Just look at shit like Bon Jovi, Motley Crew, or The Eagles. No matter which period you look at, unoriginal and crappy music has been there. @GlowingSteam not really a good analogy - as you are comparing mainstream stuff from other eras to stuff that gets a lot less play (for the most part) - you could either compare crap like Nickelback and I dunno - anybody - with Bon Jovi and etc.. or if you are going to pull out those current bands - compare them with the Pixies or something - Husker Du - college rock to college rock - arena rock to arena rock (regardless of what sub-genre - most are both depending on marketing)

Pet Sounds is such an amazing album. I never really gave the Beach Boys a fair shake because I considered them too corny. Then I read that this album actually influenced the Beatles so I figured I'd give it a listen...and another listen...and another. Now, it's one of my favorite albums of all time. It just never gets old and in fact I think it gets better with each listen.
