@MrMusicofthesoul Have we succeeded? We think so. Before long we shall have covered with our narratives an enormous period of time; between the "Comtesse de Salisbury' and the "Comte de Monte Christo" five centuries and a half are compresed. Well, we assert that we have taught France as much history about those five centuries and a half as any historian. This passage is from The Companions of Jehu which was written by Alexandre Dumas pere.
@MrMusicofthesoul "The high office of the President has been used to foment a plot to destroy the American's freedom and before I leave office, I must inform the citizen of this plight."
@MrMusicofthesoul "If we were merely dealing with the law of averages, half of the events affecting our nation's well-being should be good for America. "It has been stated" FYI; TD was created in 1967, the same year PF's first album appeared. Edgar Froese, founder of TD has never stated PF was inspirational for TD, quite on the contrary... Sid Barret was aware of the existance of TD and drew a lot of his spacy way of composing from that knowledge. TD drew it's inspiration a.o. from surrealism and composers like Conrad Schnitzler. So read up on your shit before posting things like "It has been stated..." ;-)
@KrisKenis Also, Edgar was quite taken with surrealism in Salvadore Dali's artwork and in the man himself, after playing a gig for him. Having seen a lot of Dali's artwork, I can see that Edgar may have been influenced, in the abstract style of Dali's interpretations of life as he saw it.
Ironically. PF's departure from doing covers and trying to do "pop" came after Gilmour replaced him in '68. Ummagumma in '69 is where that all started for PF. TD was about art; PF was about sound
Abstract art: the product of the untalented, sold by the unscrupulous, to the utterly bewildered.
It's the same with sound. No doubt Edgar & Co just wanted to 'get a reaction from the audience', the same crappy excuse used by those who can't paint or draw. So does a turd on the pavement, but it doesn't require any particular skill to put it there, as several million dogs will no doubt confirm!
Tangerine Dream and Pink Floyd, same fight... both they experimented in the late sixties, but if remember the official first TD have to be "Electronic meditation" featuring klaus Schulze by the way, that was released in 1969 or am i wrong? Didn't the floyds released before 67?
Definitively not! This is one of their classic songs. But when they became boring? Good question. I would say after Edgar went to the USoA and had his so called "Seattle Era". But that's only my point of view.
@spyguybuy pink floyd is not rock... certainly not any rock music I know of sounds like them... they are "The Floyd" It's it's own genre and can only be pulled of by them alone... I don't think they are rock at all... but some of this stuff does remind me of their experimental days. And TD admits they were a huge influence on them even making references to them in their albums.
@666Eternus666 Good Luck my friend, i am colecting TD LP's and CD's, i have about 130 items sor far and i am missing about 50%, not in this life time i supose
@onangaponanga whaaaaaaaaaaaat... are you talking about?! this was a decade after Pink floyd recorded "a saucerful of secrets" and 7 years after pink floyd's recording of "echoes" and "meddle"! OMG! i really can't stand it when people talks about something the know nothing about... So Please!!! Read before you post!!! get informed and educated first.
You're missing my point. Tangerine Dream was established as a musical group before Pink Floyd. Thus, Tangerine Dream would influence Pink Floyd, although it's still possible for PF to influence TD because they both performed during the same years PF existed.
I was not addressing this particular song...don't beat up yourself
"Tangerine Dream is a German electronic music group founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese."
"Pink Floyd were also an influence on Edgar Froese and Tangerine Dream. Madcap's Flaming Duty is dedicated to the memory of the late Syd Barrett. The title refers to Barrett's solo release, "The Madcap Laughs".
Pink Floyd hit the recording studio in Dec 1964, with Roger waters and Nick Mason getting together in 1963.
I was a 12 year old rabble rouser when i heard this and at weed times me and my best (one of many) girls, Melissa, used to run home to her house for a blast of dope and Cyclone. We would bone for hours on her dads Barracuda with dual carbs. That car probably cost more than his teeth and in between her legs...mmm. I pigged out on her and her sister and ran back to school with the sound of TD ringing through our ears and a wonderful taste in my mouth. Those were the days.
Got into the dream in 79 listened to Force Majuer. My mum objected to the house and those either side vibrating to this through my wharfedales and a leak valve amp. Boys will be boys Still got the amp and the speakers and the vinyl!!! 30 years older and work better than I do.
Very Science Fiction beginning, I always figured a big photonic machine running inside a Starship in this intro, but this image scenery fits very good, and would be my second choice. nice job anyway. So funny to See what it is possible to make with these excellent old records. thanks
To think, that this was made way back in the 1970's, dark electronic music, before NIN, and even Skinny Puppy. Mid to late 70's, synths were considered expensive, noise makers, never to make any music, just ruckus sounds. At the time this music was just called New Wave. "Elevator Music" Electronica, Industrial, Trance did not exist yet. Now people go to techno clubs, but most never heard of TD.
This was mixed ( from 1:06 onwards, but briefly ) with Tomita and used by Kenny Everett for the Captain Kremen cartoon on the Kenny Everett Video Show not long after this was released.
I've just smoked my 3rd cheese straw and my heads caved in too...... my mum used to go mad when i played this at home very loud ! I saw the dream in london when this came out, fantastic gig. why are they so bad now ?
I love this stuff!! Reminds me of one of my all-time favorite movies: "2001 - A Space Odyssey" When Dave Bowman's absorbed into the Monolith near Jupiter. Great stuff!
@wlvnheart they dont have anything on a lot of ambient artists i like but they have the whole spacey 'movie or soundtrack' thing down their music was probably a sci-fi movie producers dream back in the day
id never really given the 'dream much time thinking it would be total noodle wank but it is seriously eerie and gripping music wether or not you may have ingested some special substance listening to tangerine dream Madrigal Meridian will take you to another place - to infinity and beyond ! hail the deutsche space lords!
This was the 1st 'proper' LP I ever bought! I listened to it all the time because it's all I had - & I'm still listening to it more than 30 years later!
I could not belive my eyes and ears when I found out that there are still a lot of TD fans out there. Especially the early years. I my oppinion they lost i when they abandond the old analog synthesizers.
Enjoy it !!! I saw them at UCLA 7 th November 2008. Just great !!! Linda's saxophone will delight you, Iris drums also, and Edgar's piano, well, you'll see. Good Post and Godsped !!!!!!!!!!
P.S. I had Edgar Froese at 2 meters from me at the end, and if I had some paper to ask an autograph, wooHHH.Next time,hope...
8 yrs old in my dads jeep driving to a full moon nightdreaming for an hour on the highway... no words I type can describe the feeling of Energy I experienced.
Just know people that this music is being broadcasted out through the Galaxy at Light Speed! as we live out our blink of an eye lives... When we are long gone I am most certain if there are any Intelligent Beings who purposely or accidentally Tune into the music, T.D will be one of Humanity's true signs of Intelligence!
This metallic sound at the beginning, like hammers chipping away at metal, it's archetypal. It resonates deep in the unconscious, maybe in the racial memory. Bronze age man mining, forging... Anyone else get this?
@Slinkysrok What do you mean, whatever I say? Whatever I say about what? Which of my postings are you responding to? There's some clanging noises at the beginning of this music. It's obviously part of the music. Somebody suggested it was scratches in the vinyl, which is just daft.
@archdeaconj I think I understand, like genetic memory but it's always 'going off' somewhere in the brain =/
At the beginning all those lights look like the 'electric impulse' things(synapses I think?) that go off in the brain, it's cool and quite 'chilled out'.
It's a first band playing real electronic music: experimental (from "Electronic meditations" to "Alpha Centauri" and "Zeit") and next - electronic rock (specially: "Phaedra", "Rubycon", "Ricochet ", "Stratosfear", "Cyclone"). I recomend - "ZEIT"
Edgar Froese has commented that the Floyd had some early influence on TD. The Dream's music never showed much outside influence imo. They were very original.
Great song, it does remind me of Pink Floyd, also of Alan Parsons Project and a tiny bit of Jean Michel Jarre...Well ofcourse the latter were influenced I think. Still amazing song! Love it!
English-speaking people, please don't use the word AWESOME anymore, English has over 500 000 words, for God's sake choose something other than awesome, awesome, awesome...
Awesome song. Each part of Cyclone gives you an intense feeling, still always different from the previous one. Love this stuff, the video is nice too.
This song makes you wonder... does anything really exist? Yes, it sounds like a question some zonked-out stoner would ask, but this song gives me this unexplainable feeling of xenophobia and aloneness.
I was a 13 year old schoolboy when this came out and at dinner times me and my best (only) mate Kenneth used to run home to his house for a dose of cyclone. His dad had a Linn Sondek, electrostatic speakers and valve power amps. That system probably cost more than his house and the sound! We pigged out on Picnic bars and coke and ran back to school with the sound of TD ringing in our ears. Those, were the days.

@wlvnheart they dont have anything on a lot of ambient artists i like but they have the whole spacey 'movie or soundtrack' thing down their music was probably a sci-fi movie producers dream back in the day
lunarsiege 1 year ago

This was the 1st 'proper' LP I ever bought! I listened to it all the time because it's all I had - & I'm still listening to it more than 30 years later!
It doesn't get much more spaced out than this!!

Sounds like someone plucking on some strings, to me. The Alpha of the Centauri, the good verses yo' mama.

This metallic sound at the beginning, like hammers chipping away at metal, it's archetypal. It resonates deep in the unconscious, maybe in the racial memory. Bronze age man mining, forging... Anyone else get this?

Slinkysrok 10 months ago
@Slinkysrok What do you mean, whatever I say? Whatever I say about what? Which of my postings are you responding to? There's some clanging noises at the beginning of this music. It's obviously part of the music. Somebody suggested it was scratches in the vinyl, which is just daft.
archdeaconj 10 months ago
@archdeaconj I think I understand, like genetic memory but it's always 'going off' somewhere in the brain =/
At the beginning all those lights look like the 'electric impulse' things(synapses I think?) that go off in the brain, it's cool and quite 'chilled out'.
Johny40Se7en 9 months ago
@archdeaconj not at all...just a flash back of a laser light show at the planetarium with Led Zeppelin

@bizz4ethix What is just a flash back of a laser light? I'm talking about a clanging noise.

@mabrion
Right, they were ( are ) very original !

Great song, it does remind me of Pink Floyd, also of Alan Parsons Project and a tiny bit of Jean Michel Jarre...Well ofcourse the latter were influenced I think. Still amazing song! Love it!

If anything, this album is important because it ends midseventies style.
Next albums, Force Majeure and Pergamon, introduce early eighties style.

This song makes you wonder... does anything really exist? Yes, it sounds like a question some zonked-out stoner would ask, but this song gives me this unexplainable feeling of xenophobia and aloneness.
So it's a p.cool song.
