Yes you do spray water on the top side. You hit the top and let water run down both sides to cool the vapor. The liquid in the tank absorbs heat, the vapor does not. Maybe the old timers are not the ones that should take a refresher. Listen more, talk less friend.
Fire blowing from the relief vent on tanker? Never ever a good thing. Wonder if now they know to spray top of burning tank with water spray? Hopefully with a monitor nozzle.
@larrywanders lol you don't spray the top of the tank at all. The top of the tank becomes hot and weakened, so spraying cool water on it causes it to crack, just like your windshield would if you poured hot water on it when it's got ice on it. You cool the tank by putting a monitor on it directed to the low side of the tank and then turn and run.
Broke the basic rule . People before property .

One more thing, you NEVER turn your back on a tank fire. I'm starting to wonder if you ever even took firefighter I.

@mb0363 Run? Who taught you to run at a fire scene? How many firefighters do you see running at the fire ground?
And brush up on your firefighting technique before you go to a fire scene involving a gas pig, you'll live longer.

@larrywanders How old are you and how long ago did you take a Firefighter 1 class? It's been updated since the 60's. Better look into a refresher.

@mb0363 At 23 I thought I knew everything also, then I began to learn from those 'old timers' you seem to despise.

@larrywanders Run figuratively speaking, as in back out, get the f back, etc. Find an exposure to protect.

This video is awesome, but it's even cooler when you actually get the original audio from the blast!
