i have an orange quadbox but its 50 kilograms - nearly puts my back out lifting it, so i was thinking of going to the 2x12 like yours.
How do you think it would compare. (i've got a 50 W MArshall JCM 2000 head. It was too loud for home use so i put groove tube 18 W valves in - still too loud, would cutting the speakers to 2 instead of 4 drop the loudness by 50%? I hope so - then I could turn up my amp a bit more to get more tone out of the valves.)
It wouldnt reduce by 50% no. But it would drop the volume quite alot.
You could invest in a THD Hotplate, which reduces the output of your amp whilst still cooking your valves! =]
Or alternatively run it in stereo, rather than mono (flick the switch on the cab) and using twin cables from the head. Because in mono things are louder if there are more speakers.
Hope this helps. its kinda hard to explain quickly, but your probs get bored if I wrote out all the physics and numbers and blah blah...
Kidding. I recommend rolling the tone knob(s) back just a tad. I too have that axe. Endless sounds and tones can be had with that one sweet guitar. Good job.
Wow, this sounds amazing. I have always loved Orange. How much do those heads run? I would love to pick one up, but I'm a 20 year old student and money is fairly scarce lol.
Cool. I've got a TV200 as well. What a beast! I am looking forward to hear what the TV50 sounds like. I'm only running a 2x12 and I feel the TV200 even in 100W mode with attenuator up a little could be better matched with a 4x12.
I imagine it would be easier to get a good sound out of the TV50 than the 200, since the power tubes would saturate at a lower volume, without having to use the attenuator function. Aw hell, what am I talking about? It's impossible to make an Orange sound bad.
Honestly, I think you're better off sticking with a 2x12" cabinet. They sound better than 4x12"'s, and they're more compact. Of course, you don't get that big manly feel with a 2x12, but you could always just get a 4x12 and leave the bottom two speakers installed.
BTW, nice LP Custom. God, I would give my left nut for an exquisite axe like that.
3 strats!!! lol well i guess ill shut my mouth now haha, yeh orange amps are the bomb man even in looks there so mascular or somethin like the outta cab wall is thick as a brick i love it!
hey dude nice improv, i own the orange AD30 with the 2x12 cab, and its tone is fucken amazing but i was just wondering have u tried that amp with a strat? coz i recomend it if u havent already catchya man
Yup, I have 3 Strats and a Tele and they all sound superb! IMHO, Oranges seem to prefer single coils to my ears. Anything though sounds better through an Orange!
Holy cow man, I envy your setup.
Sick guitar, sick amps, sick playing.

You should add an overdrive pedal for more saturation and thicker tone.

I have the same amp, but I use the 4x12 model.
It is an amazing sound.
I also have a black Custom. Have you weighed it? Mine comes in at 10lbs 5oz. I was wondering how much the weights vary from guitar to guitar.

would this head/cab setup be good for country?
ricebowlranch 4 years ago
I suppose it can do country. I'd probably stick with a Fender Twin or a Super Reverb for spanky cleans with a nice Tele.
