  • This is a useful guide to the intro and main verses of Killing Floor. Once you get your head 'round that intro the rest if much more within reach. The bouncing off the open A and putting in the thumbed A off the bottom E is a real Hendrix style that pops up in quite a number of his songs, and covers like this one. So a great song to get down. Many thanks

  • you sound like a Yamaha

  • how long did it take you to learn tht song man. and how long youve been playing.

  • simple and perfect.. cheers!

  • I haven't practiced for a looong time and almost got nuts trying to figure out why my guitar didn't sound right ... until I see your comment !

  • im gonna wait till i get an electric to play this

  • I haven't bothered to check the comments so far so I'm not sure if people have already said this. But has anyone ever said that you look like Brandon Boyd from Incubus?

  • Great! Thanks!

  • Very, very nice playing young man. You have a lovely natural feel for the guitar. I particularly like the intro blues licks you played. Top man.

  • Thanks a lot!!

I think it is quite accurate and clearly explained. Certainly tabs doesn't make sense for this style of songs.

  • nice video man, very usefull to me, thanks a lot !!

  • hey man, dont tell people whether or not they're ready to learn a song....if people require tabs, its b/c your teaching style isnt effective...i've been playing this song for like the last three years, so i know it pretty well...you play it ok, but your teaching really isnt that great....

  • Although I'm always partial to a bright white guitar, I just fell in love with that beautiful creamy dreamy Strat

What are you plugged into? Great tone!

    Excellent playing as well

  • the shiz nit my brutha- keep postin i'll keep watchin!

  • souless pap

  • Sac de merde, that's a bag of shit for you non french talkers

  • Damn dude! You kick ass! Great lesson. "Then He goes off into his crazy solos...which are cool." lol

  • Comment removed

  • you can't play!!

  • You rock man. keep it up! ^_^

  • I've been trying to get this for about 3 hours and nailed it perfectly! thanks man!

  • there are alwasy going to be naysayers and shit talkers all over youtube, but dude you're very good.. i've played myself now for years and your vids inspire me to practice a shit lot more! good instructional video by the way. cheers..

  • great tutorial man :)

What type of stratocaster are u using and what is that amp u use? great sound...

  • looks like a 70's style mexican strat

  • how can you tell it's mexican?

  • Now we know why jimi was so damn good...

  • 1 thing i got to add: hendrix DOES NOT play those notes as fast as you do at for example 5:28, listen to the live version. Each note lasts longer.

  • actually...listen again :)

  • But your playing sounds more close to shredding. I'm not saying it's bad :)

  • I'm articulating the notes so people can hear. His distortion is on max and blurs a lot of it together. But, I'm making a lesson video, to show what he plays.

  • @jwwetzel Lol! I swear, people love to "nit pick" on this thing!! Everyone's an "expert".... dude, it was good lesson, you got good technique....definitely got Hendrix's style "down".....

  • @Silencer84 He's palmmuting and putting an accent on the notes, as the title implies, it's an instructional video.

  • @jwwetzel I think Silencer84 is right, and a few others parts are off key as well.

  • That's just great. Now try and play like Jim. Can't do it? Shut up and sit down.

  • @Silencer84 dude there at least 15 versions of killing floor in my collection so it is not possible to say that. this guy has got it down GREAT

  • awesome dude. you dont know how long i've wanted to learn this solo. much appreciated!

  • Lol how long did it take you to learn this?

  • If you still need tabs, you're not ready to learn this song.

  • @jwwetzel So true.

  • @jwwetzel hahahaha so true aye

  • @k1ngofmiaea : he's right, it may be frustrating -hell, you may know it by now, it's been a yr since you posted, but practicing w/out em will teach you more in less time...its important to sync your hands & ears...its all trial & error, but even in the mistakes you learn from it. As long as you can see the POSITION he's in, you'll "get it" - its just practice,practice,practice......no way around that, EVEN WITH TABS.Tabs cant teach you TECHNIQUE

  • @k1ngofmiaea lol if you want to learn a song this complex using tabs, I think you should just pack up your guitar and give in. If you don't like the song enough - no, love the song enough - to listen to every single note over and over to get it spot on PERFECT, you don't have the required dedication to play this kind of music.

  • @k1ngofmiaea ..... the correct way brother is to HEAR most of it and let this guy help you catch the details you cant quite get. Best of fortune to you,

  • what is the purpose of this video? to show he can rip a scale? lol. worthless, haha

  • Come back in a couple years, it might make more sense to you.

  • If thats the fender standard. but i prefer the maple fretboard

  • thats the song alright...

  • billy your a tool lol

  • dude i i think you left that comment

  • you look like swan from the warriors :D

  • Comment removed

  • Maybe haha

Sometimes when I get really into a song- and I mean I'm just enthralled by it completely- ad I start doing some really fast picking/strumming it will be blurry. And I'm not bragging or anything because it doesn't sound quite as good as this haha

  • this is the closest to the Monterey Pop recording i have heard anyone get to. 5 stars. nice tone too.

  • love the way he will be talking and then just break out into a sweet riff or solo

  • wat guitar and amp u got

  • Mate i swear its my dream to play like you lol but serious can u explain in a bit more detail cus i wud luv 2 learn that, cheers

  • Ya know Wetz, when you play Voodoo Child, I will canonize you.

  • Thanks for the vid, good inspiration. Love this song especially the Monterey version. Thank you so much for posting this. Itz very helpful

  • love the way you play...but that was an awful "lesson". you just kept playing through it full, or nearly, full speed the whole time. slow down and e-x-p-l-a-i-n.......

  • So Fenderman, you're saying you and Wetzel here suffer from that "Excuse me while I play my gitar" syndrome, eh? Yeah, tough at multitasking, or is it that the urge to play just takes over and distracts. I do the same but that's as far as the comparison goes with Jimi for me. Wish I could play the guitar half as good.

  • May I ask you something, How do you know if there is Major Or major in the C Major Scale, For example, C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C

  • because of the major 3rd. but i didnt quite understand the question

  • its very great dude

you have to make some songs now:)

because you have a big talent for playing guitar

and i think you would do very great songs :D

i hope my english is good :P

  • great!!

  • hah its pretty funny like ive the same thing that when ive a guitar in my hands i just like mkae hal scentences and play some blues riff heh

  • gringo de mierda mas de lo que habla y no toca ni mierra

  • lol you can really play that guitar

  • great playing but so much for instructional

  • What efects do u use to play this song??

    thanks again =)

  • thank you very much for the lesson!

i really like a lot this song!

  • Can't thank you enough for the vid.I'm trying to learn the song but I can't figure out the strumming/picking pattern.I would greatly appreciate it if you get a chance to please explain.

  • is it tuned down a half step?

  • ^_^ check the info

  • lol o yea

  • Hey, thanks a lot man! I'm a pretty good guitar player, but I cannot really learn by ear that well, so this video really helped me get this song down. Awesome job, dude.

  • Hello, you really good! Very impressive. I love your sound, and you get it from standard pickups. What amp are you using? You really nailed the Hendrix sound. Many guy's who teach his songs don't have the right feel. Nice work :)

  • good job!! thanks for video!!

  • I love it how you'll explain one little thing and then you'll do this crazy solo and then move on. Ha ha.

  • can u show the part where it goes kinda hi

u dont notice it as much on the jimi hendrix version

more on the howlin' wolf 1

    sorry its a bit vague

(its around 2:19 on the monterey live album) =D

  • This song makes my arm tired haha. Thanks though

  • Jay - hahaha right on. RHCP's "Snow Hey Oh" still makes my arm tired to play that riff over and over and over again hahaha

  • lol that song to hard for me haha. x]

  • very well done

  • originalname - thank you !

  • It's a cool song - i will learn it. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • buskerbuoy - awesome, it's a great song to learn

  • You are the white jimi hendrix =)! i like your style so much, it's uniqe!!

  • sikkinix - hahaha thanks!!!

  • 1 thing tho

what r the 5 or so notes for the main riff?

i cant really get it properly

    cheers

  • bobchav - i'm not sure what you mean - just use your ears :)

  • tyvvvvvm this song totally powns ass!

  • bobchav - it totally doesss

  • do you use both or just the open A?

  • it's a combo, you'll get a feel

  • haha i realized when you said "or both" at 2:47, you had a scotish accent

  • bassface - HAHA yea i have trouble speaking :)

  • thank you so much man i really dug that video in fact i appreciate all of your videos your someone i can trust to make a great lesson!

    bassface

  • Awsome vid. its jus too fast for me to understand lol i cant get it past the second lick in the intro. :S:S:S

  • ILSAIDL - keep comin back - you'll get it - just keep it up

  • hey jwwetzel i no your into fender but take a look at my gibson sg style guitar i made... lol i plan on buying a fender stratt by the end off the summer...

  • brandonrules - i'll check it out

  • THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dingleberrypoo - hahaha thanks poo man!

  • this is a great video, what kicks ass about it, is every time you start talking, you go off and start playing guitar.

  • hendrixrocks - hahaha right on

  • Looks good man, but with the E7 at the end of the intro, wouldn't more likely be a E7#9 like in Purple Haze etc, this chord seems to have been a staple/favourite of Jimi's.

  • bnapoleonc - if you listen to the Monterey performance he plays an E7, not an E7#9.

  • I think you may be right,no offence intended, just a suggestion, Great vid anyway dude, rock on.

  • Great. Ithelped me a lot. I've thought that i'm not able to play that, but after watching it I realised that it's so easy :P THANKS A LOT!

  • butcherfly - I'm glad it helped ya out!! rock on!

  • wow this is an awesome lesson ive got the licks for the intro its just very rough with alot of open strings clanging out at the same time... LOL incredibly close to jimi himself

  • maxboy - hahaha right on!

  • Last question...I hate the 500 limit when you're trying to say something. Do you have any other lessons or Hendrix breakdowns or theory that you might go over, especially for blues? Let me know because you seem to have a good basic approach and take the time to show all the fingerings, which I like when I'm trying to learn a song. Especially something like little wing or Angel by hendrix. Let me know. Thanks for the lesson and keep up the good work.

  • YARBLES - welllllll you definitely said a lot! haha - let's see.. i'm self taught, buy a book on theory if you want to learn some theory, there's a millllion of them. there are plenty of free resources online, and you could always take lessons. i don't have any more lessons planned, but we'll see! thanks man! rock on-

  • What book would you recommend for piano?

Just wondering cause you're awesome at music lol, don't know where to look.

  • AirHendrix - what do you mean, what book for piano? there's probably 700 billion books that were published for the piano?

  • Well, idk which one to buy.. I really have no clue.

Sorry if I asked the wrong question cause you are a guitarist lol.

    Anyway, good video dude :D.

  • airhendrix - hahaha i play piano, i took lessons for many years, but, what do you mean a book for piano? do you want to learn how to play the piano?

  • Yeah. I've been teaching myself with this dude named Lypur on Youtube. His instructional videos are great but even he recommends that I would get a book.

And yes, I tried asking but he's said there's too many good ones to count.

Would you have any ideas on what kind of book a beginner like me should get to reach advanced level?

Just wondering, if you don't know, I'm cool with it man. That's great to know you play piano, never even knew :D.

  • airhendrix - haha go to the music store, and buy the book "beginner piano" there's loads of them

  • Aight.

Though would Musiciansfriend have it as well? I got a discount card for that stuff :D.

  • you'll have to ask them

  • That's the way I play but I am very limited (IMO) in theory and gow to use more obscure modes and stuff. I'd like to expand my knowledge of scales and the theory behind putting some of the more complex stuff together. Like, when someone says "Yes, yoy just flat the 7th right there", I have no idea what that means. I play entirely by ear but of course know the names of the major notes on the neck and popular chords major, minor and jazz chords. Where did you find your info mostly?

  • You ripped that intro up! Nice work. It's amazing to think how popular that open A ride (slapping out Ds and Es and riffing) had become after Hendrix really let loose on the style. It still sounds better than anything today. You played it real well. I'm trying out that B# pinky grab during it that you did. It's ptrtty cool. You're real good and what makes you better than average is that you have control of the strings, are tight and get the notes you want without flubbing alot of notes.

  • hey man thx a ton for your work. I think I learned a little bit more about having a better feeling on the guitar. thx a lot again.

  • bismuth - haha right on!! glad it was helpful :)

  • yessir ...yes you do

    ehehe

  • yea baby !

you are a good teacher james ..please dont stop giving out instructionals

    peace bro

  • John - hahahaha I still owe you one for hideaway :) damnit

  • dude you're a very good guitarist and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. This song has a certain funk that you nailed. Nice work and thanks for the video, it was helpful

  • ajd - thanks man! :)

  • wow this taught me tons on that song. you are my absolute favorite guitarist on this site. i love your style of playing its similar to mine though you blow me out of the water.

  • chadabox - rock on! thank you very much :)

  • 8 years - check my channel profile

  • dude !! u can do every thing on a guitar !!!

  • hahaha i try to!

  • no trying to u can

  • yoyo so i have been working on this for a while now... are you bending the root note on the third string then jumping to the 4 on the sixth string immediately in the beginning part.

whats lame is i completely forgot about this version of the song until i watched the monterey festival on pbs sunday night. yes pbs.

  • pat0neill - i believe that is what i am doing, if i understand what you're saying!! and yes, rock on PBS

  • rawr i should look at the info first before asking stoopid questionz

  • RAWR INDEED!! hahahaha lmao - yea man- you got it :)

  • is it dropped a half step??

  • this is SICK

  • Man, you should come teach guitar where i live because everyone i know who teaches is self-centered. I have never had a guitar teacher in my life and i've been playing for around 4 years, and i was wondering if u could show me some of those basic licks like the ones were playing in between this lesson. That would be the best if u did. If you don't, that's cool just keep making these vids. Thanks!

  • Katana - I'll be puttin up some guitar lessons vids soon!!! :) stayyy tuned

  • Damn... Thank you I love this montrey version it's the best

  • xXSpartan - ya i totally agree! rock on

  • Dude Thank you! I have been wanting to learn this for ever. this is really good video. And god damn your good.

  • wavesport - you bet man! thanks a lot :)

  • holy crap you're good, why arent you famous yet?

  • haha ^ ^ lots o reasons :/

  • my ears can't keep up never mind my fingers!! outstanding :-)

  • hahaha bandagefreak - looooooollllll thank you :D

  • 6:01-6:30 begs further discussion. 6:01-6:08 was absolutely necessary, and though some might argue that 6:09 is unnecessary, 6:10 becomes necessary again, until 6:22-6:24, which is superfluous. At 6:25 it's necessary. 6:26 smells like pineapples, so you can take it or leave it, and 6:27-6:30 is CRITICAL to Killing Floor.

  • hahaha theerion :D

  • 6:01 to 6:30 is soooo necessary

  • hahahahahahaha awesome :D

  • I think your video is great! The rhythm, in my opinion, is a little off. I'm still workin' on it.

  • petsnowflake - yar it's my version!!

  • i found 6:01-6:30 unnecessary

  • haha yoyoyoyoyoyoy until you do you won't be able to play it!! muhahaha

  • i dont think i need to learn that to play killing floor.

  • yoyoyoyyo - haha, don't miss the point!

  • still dont get your point. :p

  • haha sorry then, can't help ya :D

  • Very good video. Go on!

  • Roberto - woo hoo!!! thanks :D

  • Nice video man.

    Rgds / B.a.S.

  • BAS - thanks man!

  • might want to note that its in e flat in the video description

  • DaveEscobar - you are so right - I can't believe it's been this long and I never corrected that -

    Thank you sir!! cheers!

  • great video!! i must say that your version of killing floor is pretty damn close to the one jimi played. Nice playing. good break down.

  • kiley - thank you much - i'm glad ya liked it :D
