This is a useful guide to the intro and main verses of Killing Floor. Once you get your head 'round that intro the rest if much more within reach. The bouncing off the open A and putting in the thumbed A off the bottom E is a real Hendrix style that pops up in quite a number of his songs, and covers like this one. So a great song to get down. Many thanks
I haven't bothered to check the comments so far so I'm not sure if people have already said this. But has anyone ever said that you look like Brandon Boyd from Incubus?
hey man, dont tell people whether or not they're ready to learn a song....if people require tabs, its b/c your teaching style isnt effective...i've been playing this song for like the last three years, so i know it pretty well...you play it ok, but your teaching really isnt that great....
there are alwasy going to be naysayers and shit talkers all over youtube, but dude you're very good.. i've played myself now for years and your vids inspire me to practice a shit lot more! good instructional video by the way. cheers..
I'm articulating the notes so people can hear. His distortion is on max and blurs a lot of it together. But, I'm making a lesson video, to show what he plays.
@jwwetzel Lol! I swear, people love to "nit pick" on this thing!! Everyone's an "expert".... dude, it was good lesson, you got good technique....definitely got Hendrix's style "down".....
@k1ngofmiaea : he's right, it may be frustrating -hell, you may know it by now, it's been a yr since you posted, but practicing w/out em will teach you more in less time...its important to sync your hands & ears...its all trial & error, but even in the mistakes you learn from it. As long as you can see the POSITION he's in, you'll "get it" - its just practice,practice,practice......no way around that, EVEN WITH TABS.Tabs cant teach you TECHNIQUE
@k1ngofmiaea lol if you want to learn a song this complex using tabs, I think you should just pack up your guitar and give in. If you don't like the song enough - no, love the song enough - to listen to every single note over and over to get it spot on PERFECT, you don't have the required dedication to play this kind of music.
@k1ngofmiaea ..... the correct way brother is to HEAR most of it and let this guy help you catch the details you cant quite get. Best of fortune to you,
Sometimes when I get really into a song- and I mean I'm just enthralled by it completely- ad I start doing some really fast picking/strumming it will be blurry. And I'm not bragging or anything because it doesn't sound quite as good as this haha
love the way you play...but that was an awful "lesson". you just kept playing through it full, or nearly, full speed the whole time. slow down and e-x-p-l-a-i-n.......
So Fenderman, you're saying you and Wetzel here suffer from that "Excuse me while I play my gitar" syndrome, eh? Yeah, tough at multitasking, or is it that the urge to play just takes over and distracts. I do the same but that's as far as the comparison goes with Jimi for me. Wish I could play the guitar half as good.
Can't thank you enough for the vid.I'm trying to learn the song but I can't figure out the strumming/picking pattern.I would greatly appreciate it if you get a chance to please explain.
Hey, thanks a lot man! I'm a pretty good guitar player, but I cannot really learn by ear that well, so this video really helped me get this song down. Awesome job, dude.
Hello, you really good! Very impressive. I love your sound, and you get it from standard pickups. What amp are you using? You really nailed the Hendrix sound. Many guy's who teach his songs don't have the right feel. Nice work :)
hey jwwetzel i no your into fender but take a look at my gibson sg style guitar i made... lol i plan on buying a fender stratt by the end off the summer...
Looks good man, but with the E7 at the end of the intro, wouldn't more likely be a E7#9 like in Purple Haze etc, this chord seems to have been a staple/favourite of Jimi's.
wow this is an awesome lesson ive got the licks for the intro its just very rough with alot of open strings clanging out at the same time... LOL incredibly close to jimi himself
Last question...I hate the 500 limit when you're trying to say something. Do you have any other lessons or Hendrix breakdowns or theory that you might go over, especially for blues? Let me know because you seem to have a good basic approach and take the time to show all the fingerings, which I like when I'm trying to learn a song. Especially something like little wing or Angel by hendrix. Let me know. Thanks for the lesson and keep up the good work.
YARBLES - welllllll you definitely said a lot! haha - let's see.. i'm self taught, buy a book on theory if you want to learn some theory, there's a millllion of them. there are plenty of free resources online, and you could always take lessons. i don't have any more lessons planned, but we'll see! thanks man! rock on-
Yeah. I've been teaching myself with this dude named Lypur on Youtube. His instructional videos are great but even he recommends that I would get a book.
And yes, I tried asking but he's said there's too many good ones to count.
Would you have any ideas on what kind of book a beginner like me should get to reach advanced level?
Just wondering, if you don't know, I'm cool with it man. That's great to know you play piano, never even knew :D.
That's the way I play but I am very limited (IMO) in theory and gow to use more obscure modes and stuff. I'd like to expand my knowledge of scales and the theory behind putting some of the more complex stuff together. Like, when someone says "Yes, yoy just flat the 7th right there", I have no idea what that means. I play entirely by ear but of course know the names of the major notes on the neck and popular chords major, minor and jazz chords. Where did you find your info mostly?
You ripped that intro up! Nice work. It's amazing to think how popular that open A ride (slapping out Ds and Es and riffing) had become after Hendrix really let loose on the style. It still sounds better than anything today. You played it real well. I'm trying out that B# pinky grab during it that you did. It's ptrtty cool. You're real good and what makes you better than average is that you have control of the strings, are tight and get the notes you want without flubbing alot of notes.
dude you're a very good guitarist and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. This song has a certain funk that you nailed. Nice work and thanks for the video, it was helpful
wow this taught me tons on that song. you are my absolute favorite guitarist on this site. i love your style of playing its similar to mine though you blow me out of the water.
yoyo so i have been working on this for a while now... are you bending the root note on the third string then jumping to the 4 on the sixth string immediately in the beginning part.
whats lame is i completely forgot about this version of the song until i watched the monterey festival on pbs sunday night. yes pbs.
Man, you should come teach guitar where i live because everyone i know who teaches is self-centered. I have never had a guitar teacher in my life and i've been playing for around 4 years, and i was wondering if u could show me some of those basic licks like the ones were playing in between this lesson. That would be the best if u did. If you don't, that's cool just keep making these vids. Thanks!
6:01-6:30 begs further discussion. 6:01-6:08 was absolutely necessary, and though some might argue that 6:09 is unnecessary, 6:10 becomes necessary again, until 6:22-6:24, which is superfluous. At 6:25 it's necessary. 6:26 smells like pineapples, so you can take it or leave it, and 6:27-6:30 is CRITICAL to Killing Floor.

I think your video is great! The rhythm, in my opinion, is a little off. I'm still workin' on it.
