I'm a paid dancer for a contemporary dance company and i can tell all of these most likely competition school dancers that REAL dance isn't about just the choreography but the execution, and this dancer felt what the piece meant to her and made something of it. If all you could focus on was the amount of shoulder rolls, then you're missing out on the beautiful meaning and reason for dancing. Beautiful music choice too, Aphex Twin is one of my favorites

your quailty is lovely, but the choreography looks too much like class exercises with a constant shoulder rolls, fish flops and extensions. if the choreography was changed so that it could still use those elements, but approach them differently it would be a lot more interesting. a good example is be the first 30 seconds. Great work!

Don't let the naysayers about those shoulder rolls bring you down. If anyone has ever taken a class on choreography then you would know repetition can be used for cohesion and as a motif.

IT WORKS HERE. She is not just throwing them in whenever, the rolls make sense and happen with an amazing natural flow as a means of travelling around the floor.

Most of these people whining are used to baseless contemporary choreography that has a ton of elements thrown in with no thought, this was art.

@gumbionics this was absolutely art! its art by the way she approaches it in her performance. and as one of those naysayers, i love shoulder rolls and I use them often in my own work. It's just that shoulder rolls are one of the most common contemporary movements, it's become signature to contemporary work and is not as powerful as it used to be, more expected. There is lots of other really good interesting new movement here, just not the shoulder rolls.

For your information, she is an extremely gifted contempory dancer, and if you cannot see that- which you clearly can't, then i suggest you keep your mouth shut. This is an excellent piece of coreography and it is danced with poise and beauty. Please, if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I really liked this, i love the choreo, I'm so sick and tired of ballet trained dancers calling this style "not dance" well, i say show em 2 fingers and carry on, this was great. Reminded I'm not attacking any ballet trained dancers just saying they should be more open minded.

i understand what you're saying and myself being ballet trained it is frustraiting when i see beautifully choroegraphed modern or contemporary dances and dancers being unnapreciated but i also think that what most people think is modern dance is actually just movement and no technique. now with Limone style or Grahm there is technique that is to be appreciated but when i see new dancers now in our generation just moving without technique or purpose it does get frustrating.

I am so bored with all these solos classified as modern/cont and there are pointshoes and ballet skirts and arabesques and turned out pirouettes etc

This was beautiful, choreography was really nice and fitted music, and the dancer did a really great job.

I hope you are still creating pieces, I would love to see more floor work and use of weight, especially with the upper body/head leading the movement but great job!

I'm nearing the end of my degree now and I think this is a very good piece for the stage you are probably at; regardless of music choices (whatever-music here's great) your body moves very, very nice and neat here and it's a wonderful performance. what i don't like from most contemporary choreographers is the use of the music; the piece is not based on the music, not following the tempo. why?

using music does not equal following the tempo. there are different ways of interpretting the music. through the atmosphere it gives or the direction it pushes you in. you can still make perfectly good use of the music by for instance standing still when the music demands that you move in a quick tempo. it gives contrast in your work. there is alot more to it. but to little space to explain :)

In contemporary dance its not about following the beat of the music, there are many ways to follow the music, but staying with the tempo or beat is intirely your own choice. I do contemporary dance and its my favourite dancing, i find that you can choose any music? and its your own decision to stay to the tempo or not, i just think it add flavour in a way because most dances always follow beats or tempo and contemporary is just letting your self go. well i find it like that.

It's not gymnastic. Floor work/ inversion is very common in contemporary modern. In gymnastic, there is no transitions. You should look into dance scenes in Utah, New York, even Los Angeles. Just FYI if you're not familiar with contemporary modern.

best thing to do is listen to film soundtracks because themusic in them is always full of emotion. erm, pearl harbour has some good stuff, and generally just search the internet! also your dance teacher will have loads of music for you to listen to.! :D
