I watched this one a lot as a kid. Now, as an adult, I can't do it. I give the makers props for spending so much time making it, but it is far too dark, far too intense, and the sight of seeing animals being put into horrific, life-threatning situations just for the sake of filmmaking is just too much. Childhood innocence can't reclaim this one for me.

@SkudKid111 Um~ they were handled by trainers they've known their whole lives. They were outside a lot and got to play in the outdoors. I think they were happier than most of the dogs that know nothing more than their living rooms and backyards and the occasional trip to the park.

I never wached this movie when I was a kid but watched it now and I really liked it,the only thing that bothers me about this movie is that its obvious that for some scenes in the movie they tortured the animals,like the cliff scene,snow scene,Otis on a rock surrounded by sea....its a very good movie for a kid to watch but for a grown up that knows how terrible it must have been for the animals in this movie,not so good.I liked the movie but they should have waited 10 for CGI to come out. ;)

Don't worry Frankid, its not as bad as it looks. The movie was recorded over a period of 4 years and after each scene the animals took long breaks and got lots of attention, and were closely watched during the recording.

@frankid5 There were claims that the animals were tortured in fact I think it was claimed that the cat role was filled by more then one cat and that in the limping scene the leg was broken for the affect but there was no evidence to support any of these claims and animals in movies are diligently trained I am sure, or at least I hope that it would have been understood by the animals that they would not be abandoned by the handlers in such situations.

Did you know this movie was made in Japan in 1986 and came to the states in 1989? i was 7/8 years old when i saw this in theaters.

@Johnlindsey289 Yep. I knew it took a long time for this to be released here in the states and i heard it was a really difficult movie to make too. I've never seen the original Japanese version but i've heard it's very different and much darker than the U.S. version.
