  • how do you play that low c? I CAN"T DO IT!

  • what is it with expert village? talk about a misnomer

  • I never stop being surprised over how musicians and teachers complicate things and lack the ability to contextualize simple things to make them understandable.

  • i play really high for no reason i tred breath control still nothing. tried different videos were they play theres sounds low and when i do the same i am HIGH like really HIGH

  • Just recently (3 days ago) I decided to switch from Trumpet, to Flute, I am making great progress, I can already play B-C-D-E-F-G-A Quickly together. Someone tell me if this is Good progress or not.

  • jennifer, you are so beautiful playing the flute. I hope I get there someday.

    bighispanicguy

  • I dont know how to change pitch :/ every not sounds the same

  • @MrLOLcats7 You blow softer to get a lower pitch and you blow harder to get a higher pitch : ) Hope that helps : )

  • MY FLUTE HAS 6 HOLES ONLY :(

  • This isn't difficult to masturbate to.

  • YOU!

  • THANK!

  • My nose flares when I play flute and it makes me look mad and crazy. : ) lol.

  • How do you play low notes?

  • Sooooo hot.

  • Love how she doesn't say "Hello. I'm _______ from expert village, and I'll be teaching you how to ______________" like all the other robotic employes.

  • for your informating i do play flute so fuck off

  • @andreabell909 wow? you play the flute, i do too...? shes teaching you how to play notes.....

  • You're not supposed to smile when you play. My teacher says it's bad.

  • @ShadowKC17 It depends on the person. we all have different mouth structures and weather they smile or frown is how they play.

  • so how many notes can a flute play? 2 octaves?

  • @MISSKitty131996 wayyy more... more than 3 octaves

  • Jennifer Cluff explains the different embouchures in a PDF (Google search: lippixlazz.pdf). It goes from stiff-smiling (mouth-corners up) to - relaxed, sarcastic-smiling (mouth-corners down), leaning-forward lips (like french "pu"), tense-and-thin(smiling). She says: When the lips are tense and thin the air jet misses focus and concentration (this comes with the "tense" or "smiling"

    embouchure).

  • Rampal seems to smile and frown at the same time. (Just did a search for rampal flute on Google Images). But, he is indeed using his mouth-face muscles to form a tensed-looking facial expression. Some flutists are so relaxed they seem to not use the mouth-face muscles at all (no facial expression, like an android) - and still get a really good sound. Thanks for the tip, I'll work on it.

  • Ps DON'T start off with C ...BUY 'Tune a Day' and go from there ...preferabl with a teacher.

  • HOW did that come out so deep! My fingering is EXACTLY the same as hers but mine is so much higher? Please help :(

  • @kesrawr OMG SAME.

  • @ItzzzJay FINALLY someone with the same problem! I've tried blowing into it differently and at different angles etc, but nothing is working. How about yours?

  • @kesrawr neither, i tried like, blowing it at different angles like you, uhh..... i even tried tightening my throat when blowing, but no difference T_T

  • @ItzzzJay Uh. I desperately need lessons. Everyone I watch playing flute can so easily to scales, and I want to know the secret :(

  • @kesrawr Because your airstream needs to be slower when you play low. To play higher, you blow harder.

  • @Sharingan920 Thanks, I'll definitely give it a try. Bare in mind I may get back to you on that because knowing my luck it probably won't work :')

  • @kesrawr it takes a lot of practice! I'm a trumpet player, but I'm currently (with a little help from some friends) teaching myself flute. Changing pitch is more or less a similar concept :) You'll get it!

  • @Sharingan920 Aw, thank you! I sure hope so. I have this dream of being super good at it, so I guess I've just got to keep trying :)

  • Also ...buy a dcent tutor book and follow it for a few years.

  • oh and...12 people hit the "im only good at triange button" pom pom tish...!!! ding...!

  • who the hell teach's the flute now days and where do you find them...?

  • @pakreecekennedy Look around for a professional ...Orchestra/ Military band / School of music ...good teacher are not that plentiful.

  • @MeganAndHannah20137 it is a c i know i am a FLOUTEST!

  • @MeganAndHannah20137 that is totally a C :P

    it sounds like C

my tuner says its a C

  • really? an entire video just to show how to play 1 note?! this is why i hate expert village

  • @creamiorange whoa whoa whoa there are a lot of notes for the flute so its better to take it slow and learn the notes and fingering to get better and not screw up.

  • A variety of transverse flute embouchures are employed by professional flutists, though the most natural form is perfectly symmetrical, the corners of the mouth relaxed, the lower lip placed along and at a short distance from the embouchure hole. The end-blown xiao, kaval, shakuhachi and hocchiku flutes demand especially difficult embouchures, sometimes requiring many lessons before any sound can be produced.

  • has anybody had the idea that maybe she is in tune. I'm no flutist however but it's common knowledge that recordings can change the pitch slightly.

  • i fell for her

  • what do you mean?

  • @MeganAndHannah20137 But if it isn't C, why does it sound like C?

  • @meowkie it is a c thats why, i am a floutest yes it is floutest not flutest

  • this is not good i hated it

  • terrible

  • @andreabell909 if you are sayin the flute is terrible you are wrong i play the flute it is the most awesome-est instument ever it is true to a person who probably dosen't play the flute yes the notes might seem weired

  • Her embouchure is fine, she can smile all she wants. There's no right way to play a flute - you figure it out yourself - with a little help from your friends. Different teachers say different things. Different players have different shaped mouths.

  • Absolutely Right jazzfluist, I smile all want

  • @jazzflutist their is a right way to plaly flute posture, tonging , right notes, accuracey and a little call sluring (WHEN NEEDED)

  • @jazzflutist No to you and the others who responded to my comment negatively. Smiling IS wrong because it affects the tone quality, making it more tense and restricted. But then again, it does depend on the type of sound you want. If you're aiming for the classical sound (the usual aim), it's best to have your mouth as loose as possible because it minimizes airiness and maximizes intonation control. It's a physical phenomenon. Differently shaped mouths is not a direct factor to this.

  • @aznpiccplayer123 : Thanks for the good advice. I'm going to try loosening up my embouchure to see because I do tend to play slightly tight and this might be affecting my low notes, and the others. Keep up the good work!

  • @jazzflutist If you smile while playing the flute, you're pulling your face from the instrument. If you frown while playing, your face is completely conformed to the flute, which allows you to have complete control and flexibility of your notes. Watch James Galeway's master class video for embrosure.

  • Comment removed

  • Your posture is totally wrong.

  • her C sounds horrible...if youre going to teach people, at least teach them right. dont brainwash us. and your sound has a buzzing tone, which is only neccessary for 2nd C down. get it right before you teach anyone. -.-

  • could you please remove the sub cause i cant see how you demonstrate where the fingers should go?

  • holy shit 138,685 videos!

  • low c's are haed to get in tune that was gd

  • I'd fuck her.

  • @irenicflutist because there are some people in music who are hearing impaired, like I myself is and subtitles helps.

  • hey, este video esta bien, yo estudio flauta y tengo profesor y para estudiar sola me sirven muchooo!

  • oye, no debes usar esos videos...ve a los videos de nina perlov (ninaflute?)...son más buenos.

  • Well, ..I don't agree with that comment, I know people that with a little bit they became great artist, there you have the masters of Jazz saxos and Pianists...they developed on their own.. NOTHING CAN'T STOP YOU IF YOU HAVE PURE TALENT....

  • Not all of us are privileged enough to take classes or learn by a professional. I live in the country in the middle of nowhere and the nearest music store is in the next state over! I know to take anything on the internet with a grain of salt. But for some of us, it's all we have got.

  • She still "produces" the note a bit wrong.

  • thats cuz shes not in tune

  • all of you shut up i started flute like 5 hours ago and still don't get the fingerings, i play trumpet not flute but wanna learn so this isn't easy for me

  • ok i will admit that YOU have an excuse to think they're good or decent because you're a beginner, but the only things that you should be using expertvillage for are these:

    1. find out fingerings...really hard to fuck up on that

    2. what NOT to do...anything they do OTHER than fingerings, DO NOT listen to

  • @IVIoon21 I play trumpet and flute. Ive been playing trumpet for 1-2 years and i just started playing flute today. Ive memorized all of the fingerings but its hard to get some of the notes out.

  • were not idiots

  • Umm,where's the vibrato?

  • Her embouchure's wrong. She's using the "smiling" embouchure, which is wrong; it's supposd to be more of a "frowning" embouchure. So much for "expert"...not that I expected much from expertvillage anyways. They really need to get real experts on expertvillage.

  • Everyones embouchure is different, but you are right, smiling will cause the muscles in your face to tire and give a bad sound.

  • @aznpiccplayer123 There's no true "right" or "wrong" embouchure on the flute, it depends on the player's anatomy. As long as the sounds is rich and smooth, no one cares about how your mouth looks.

Agree on the lack of expert on expertvillage though.

  • @minh0204 There is. The "smiling" one is "wrong" in that it's much less effective since you have less of your lip on the instrument and therefore less control on pitch and stuff. The "right" or "frowning" one is just more effective because the sound comes out more relaxed (and much less sharp) and fuller, plus you can control pitch better, too.

  • @aznpiccplayer123 That isn't true my friend. Smile emborchune isn't wrong. Just unfit for many people. Optimal embouchure is individual. In fact someone has realy thin emborchune. Generaly it isn't wrong. It is true, than many beginners uses thinner than they should. It is common mistake to think that smiling emborchune is wrong. Sorry for my bad english :]

  • @maarabas Quite the contrary. It's a common mistake to think that the smiling embouchure is NOT wrong. Most people who are self taught or have friends who are simply self taught think that it doesn't matter because in reality they just don't have any way of knowing any better, but if you actually take lessons, you'll know. The smiling embouchure makes it hard to control both your tone quality and pitch. Everything becomes too sharp, pitch and timbre alike.

  • @aznpiccplayer123 yeah im in band and i play the clarinet and we use smiling. but idk about the flutes

  • @cowgirl11817 no acuutually i dosent matter some do and some dont eather way is correct.

  • @aznpiccplayer123 A variety of transverse flute embouchures are employed by professional flutists, though the most natural form is perfectly symmetrical, the corners of the mouth relaxed, the lower lip placed along and at a short distance from the embouchure hole. The end-blown xiao, kaval, shakuhachi and hocchiku flutes demand especially difficult embouchures, sometimes requiring many lessons before any sound can be produced.

  • @ashyrootz it dosent alway take alot of lessons, i made sound the very first day i got my flute without looking it up on here.

  • @aznpiccplayer123 really eather way is correct as long as you are makeing the right notes tonging, accuracy is all right then really its fine.

  • when i try to play the low c, why can't i make a sound? im hold all the same keys down but it sounds like a velociraptor

  • she is completly correct. she said for the c major scale. the first note is c.

  • She's better than that Sarah chick.

But a person playing for 10 years is generally not an "expert". Someone who starts playing in elementary school (fifth grade?) and finishes out high school will have played for eight years. Would you consider a college junior an expert, even though they still have much to learn?

  • You are right, you don't start at c. My teacher made my start at b.

  • Wow, its a scale... how hard can it be?

  • I'd say start with second C because it's simpler for students to remember.

  • She's not wrong ! The title of thes video is How to play flute scales in C major ! and not how to start playing the flute !

  • she's not wrong, according to my tuner she is playing low C and then high C in tune, plus she is fingering it right because I was able to do it too. that said, maybe she might have made some mistakes, i dunno.

  • my flute is very different... it's wod and has just six hles... how do i play C???

  • First; teach student s to STAND when they play. Bad graphics and flute chart is not clear for rh pinkie.

NEVER start at the bottom register to teach; start in the middle.

Bad lesson. Clearly; You need to get more experience teaching.

  • blah. i love the flute.

    im getting better.

  • i cant do it but i'll keep trying

  • some how it when i blow it's all sweaky

  • Low C is a difficult note to play but your note comes out very flat! I seriously suggest that you use a tuner if your going to instruct beginners.

  • please help me, the lower C of my flute does not sound... how can I play it? Is my flute the problem? thanks

  • probably use warmer air and make opening of your mouth bigger.
