I never stop being surprised over how musicians and teachers complicate things and lack the ability to contextualize simple things to make them understandable.
i play really high for no reason i tred breath control still nothing. tried different videos were they play theres sounds low and when i do the same i am HIGH like really HIGH
Just recently (3 days ago) I decided to switch from Trumpet, to Flute, I am making great progress, I can already play B-C-D-E-F-G-A Quickly together. Someone tell me if this is Good progress or not.
Love how she doesn't say "Hello. I'm _______ from expert village, and I'll be teaching you how to ______________" like all the other robotic employes.
Jennifer Cluff explains the different embouchures in a PDF (Google search: lippixlazz.pdf). It goes from stiff-smiling (mouth-corners up) to - relaxed, sarcastic-smiling (mouth-corners down), leaning-forward lips (like french "pu"), tense-and-thin(smiling). She says: When the lips are tense and thin the air jet misses focus and concentration (this comes with the "tense" or "smiling"
Rampal seems to smile and frown at the same time. (Just did a search for rampal flute on Google Images). But, he is indeed using his mouth-face muscles to form a tensed-looking facial expression. Some flutists are so relaxed they seem to not use the mouth-face muscles at all (no facial expression, like an android) - and still get a really good sound. Thanks for the tip, I'll work on it.
@ItzzzJay FINALLY someone with the same problem! I've tried blowing into it differently and at different angles etc, but nothing is working. How about yours?
@kesrawr neither, i tried like, blowing it at different angles like you, uhh..... i even tried tightening my throat when blowing, but no difference T_T
@kesrawr it takes a lot of practice! I'm a trumpet player, but I'm currently (with a little help from some friends) teaching myself flute. Changing pitch is more or less a similar concept :) You'll get it!
@creamiorange whoa whoa whoa there are a lot of notes for the flute so its better to take it slow and learn the notes and fingering to get better and not screw up.
A variety of transverse flute embouchures are employed by professional flutists, though the most natural form is perfectly symmetrical, the corners of the mouth relaxed, the lower lip placed along and at a short distance from the embouchure hole. The end-blown xiao, kaval, shakuhachi and hocchiku flutes demand especially difficult embouchures, sometimes requiring many lessons before any sound can be produced.
@andreabell909 if you are sayin the flute is terrible you are wrong i play the flute it is the most awesome-est instument ever it is true to a person who probably dosen't play the flute yes the notes might seem weired
Her embouchure is fine, she can smile all she wants. There's no right way to play a flute - you figure it out yourself - with a little help from your friends. Different teachers say different things. Different players have different shaped mouths.
@jazzflutist No to you and the others who responded to my comment negatively. Smiling IS wrong because it affects the tone quality, making it more tense and restricted. But then again, it does depend on the type of sound you want. If you're aiming for the classical sound (the usual aim), it's best to have your mouth as loose as possible because it minimizes airiness and maximizes intonation control. It's a physical phenomenon. Differently shaped mouths is not a direct factor to this.
@aznpiccplayer123 : Thanks for the good advice. I'm going to try loosening up my embouchure to see because I do tend to play slightly tight and this might be affecting my low notes, and the others. Keep up the good work!
@jazzflutist If you smile while playing the flute, you're pulling your face from the instrument. If you frown while playing, your face is completely conformed to the flute, which allows you to have complete control and flexibility of your notes. Watch James Galeway's master class video for embrosure.
@jazzflutist You're misleading people. Help from your friends? Self-taught players ALWAYS have unknown handicaps working against them, and when you DO go to a lesson, and find out what handicap you were working on, it'll likely be one that the teacher has seen many times. Students plateau when they're self-teaching for the exact same set of reasons over and over again, and it's not the least bit necessary for this to have happened to them.
her C sounds horrible...if youre going to teach people, at least teach them right. dont brainwash us. and your sound has a buzzing tone, which is only neccessary for 2nd C down. get it right before you teach anyone. -.-
Well, ..I don't agree with that comment, I know people that with a little bit they became great artist, there you have the masters of Jazz saxos and Pianists...they developed on their own.. NOTHING CAN'T STOP YOU IF YOU HAVE PURE TALENT....
Not all of us are privileged enough to take classes or learn by a professional. I live in the country in the middle of nowhere and the nearest music store is in the next state over! I know to take anything on the internet with a grain of salt. But for some of us, it's all we have got.
all of you shut up i started flute like 5 hours ago and still don't get the fingerings, i play trumpet not flute but wanna learn so this isn't easy for me
ok i will admit that YOU have an excuse to think they're good or decent because you're a beginner, but the only things that you should be using expertvillage for are these:
1. find out fingerings...really hard to fuck up on that
2. what NOT to do...anything they do OTHER than fingerings, DO NOT listen to
@IVIoon21 I play trumpet and flute. Ive been playing trumpet for 1-2 years and i just started playing flute today. Ive memorized all of the fingerings but its hard to get some of the notes out.
Her embouchure's wrong. She's using the "smiling" embouchure, which is wrong; it's supposd to be more of a "frowning" embouchure. So much for "expert"...not that I expected much from expertvillage anyways. They really need to get real experts on expertvillage.
@aznpiccplayer123 There's no true "right" or "wrong" embouchure on the flute, it depends on the player's anatomy. As long as the sounds is rich and smooth, no one cares about how your mouth looks.
Agree on the lack of expert on expertvillage though.
@minh0204 There is. The "smiling" one is "wrong" in that it's much less effective since you have less of your lip on the instrument and therefore less control on pitch and stuff. The "right" or "frowning" one is just more effective because the sound comes out more relaxed (and much less sharp) and fuller, plus you can control pitch better, too.
@aznpiccplayer123 That isn't true my friend. Smile emborchune isn't wrong. Just unfit for many people. Optimal embouchure is individual. In fact someone has realy thin emborchune. Generaly it isn't wrong. It is true, than many beginners uses thinner than they should. It is common mistake to think that smiling emborchune is wrong. Sorry for my bad english :]
@maarabas Quite the contrary. It's a common mistake to think that the smiling embouchure is NOT wrong. Most people who are self taught or have friends who are simply self taught think that it doesn't matter because in reality they just don't have any way of knowing any better, but if you actually take lessons, you'll know. The smiling embouchure makes it hard to control both your tone quality and pitch. Everything becomes too sharp, pitch and timbre alike.
@aznpiccplayer123 A variety of transverse flute embouchures are employed by professional flutists, though the most natural form is perfectly symmetrical, the corners of the mouth relaxed, the lower lip placed along and at a short distance from the embouchure hole.
