I want one of these - the airframe and design are brilliant, but I'd replace the avionics and make the craft all digital. it's so agile and speedy, I wonder if anyone's thought if using it as the Marine One Presidential transport copter. Of course, it would need to be up-armored and armed ... and brought up to US Navy/Marine flight specs.
Now... How is this more fuel efficient than a regular E355? With an addition of 2 more engines!! I want to know what is the solution for the retreating blade stall? Is pitching the main rotor blades to a zero degree will not be a factor anymore? And not counting you will not be able to "hot swap" anymore with this propellers right at the doors!!!
An impressive demonstration how to avoid the technical complication in develloping an manufactoring a tiltrotor aircraft, which means: lower production costs at similar results. I expect at least 200 Kts TA cruise and 60 to 70% of the price of a comparable tiltrotor aircraft. The fuel costs could be right between copter and tiltrotor, and the maintenance easier. Work it out, how long one could fly cheaper with this system.
This shows how the US over engineers in the tilt wing while the smart europeans come up with a elegant idea. Also look at the Rotodyne of Britich of the 1950's.
@Nunubyou1 there's nothing over-engineering in tilt rotor, which is not restricted in US only. BA609 civilian tilt rotor is made under consortium with Anglo-Italian AgustaWestland. The tilt rotor so far still have speed and range advantage compared to compound choppers. Also the idea of separated propulsion is actually one of the earliest idea for propelling a helicopter forward, and it's been practiced on the earlier (failed) AH-56 Cheyenne and record-breaking Sikorsky X2.
@mauricioalfredo83 The Sikorsky X-2 is very different. It was designed to go even faster than this, and it uses a counter-rotating rigid main rotor, this EC X3 still uses an articulated main rotor. At 230 knots, still very impressive. These technnologies, and even the Army SOAR project, have all pretty much been done before, just the new technologies like FBW are making them more easy to achive reliable functionality. And you're right, not as cool as Airwolf, and I cringed listening to that...

@TheQuietRebel It WAS a great show, with futuristic helicopter technology that no one's done since.

I guess no passengers/crew will be getting on/off while props are turning. Engine shutdown every time?
theclivesinclair 3 weeks ago
@theclivesinclair Or maybe just a clutch to stop the props spining at runing engines.

the only diference whit the Sikorsky is it have 2 horizontal engines instead 1...and IT WILL NEVER BEE AS COOL AS AIR WOLF
