Yep, otherwise known as 'The Beach' or even 'Ginger Beach'-great place to grow up in the late 60's and 70's. Seaside Amusement Park, Peppermint Beach Club, Peabody's and oh, boy the tourists!! :) I was a little kid when this song came out but it sticks in my mind even now-

Bill Deal and the Rhondels - this is the best!! You can't be depressed and listen to this song. (Giuliano Palma and the Bluebeaters also have a version of this. Maybe not as good as the real Deal, but fun to watch.)
Bill Deal & the Rhondels got their start at the Peppermint Beach Club in Virginia Beach, VA. They rocked the boardwalk & beach. R.I.P. Bill, your music lives on.
I remember the Peppermint Beach Club in Virginia Beach as the home of Bill Deal & the Rhondels, featuring Roy Hines (shown in the photo at 0:27). They were THE premier band in the entire Tidewater area in the 60s, when Rhythm & Blues became Soul Music. Always had a tight brass section, excellent musicians, excellent performances!
I GUARANTEE somewhere in a college in Virginia this very Friday & Saturday nights, they WILL be playing this song, & a bunch of kids will be "Shaggin'" to it, like 1966 never went away...
@jjccarias La version musical del trio Galleta es bastante buena; aun despues de haber sido solo un cover del original de Bill Deal. Lo mas destacado es haberlo hecho solo con guitarras y sin el beneficio de otros instrumentos y sonidos especiales. Saludos.
I was watching some dumb movie last night (11-16-2010) and i was about to change it when they started playing records, thats right "RECORDS" and this was the song they played. I would sing this song in the living room all the time in the late 60`s because thats where everyone kept the record player in the living room. I like "ALL" music i seriously do but you can`t keep me out of the late 50`s, all 60`s and disco days 70`s. Because of the "Dumb" movie i was able to revisit my youth again. LOL
@tlbutler57 That's cos everyone wants to be a soloist.....no real bands anymore. I don't know why the music today is SO impovirshed. This is just downright fun. A lot of todays music is crude, depressing, dark, etc.

Inclusive llegué a ver el clip, creo que lo pasaban en el programa Hit Parade. Todo un exito, creo que sólo le hizo "sombra" Sugar, Sugar de los Archies. Thanks a lot joserf for post it!
Great post! Love the image of the old Peppermint's rear (:31). How many times back in the 60s did I wake up on that beach! I am age 63 now and used to frat with the band back then. The Peppermint was always my 'weekend home', lol! RIP Bill Deal.
anyone know who did the original version of this song? This may be the original - I'm just not sure. I know I've heard several other versions. Thanks!
Hi, guitarplayer85. Both of these groups are GREAT. Each have their distinctive styles. I was stationed at Cherry Point, N.C., during 1967 and early '68 and the Tams were all over the radio with this song. Actually, the words to this song would make you think it's kind of sad ........ but it's NOT. You just want to get up and dance, don't you? Saw the 'original' Tams in Mytle Beach many years ago. What a terrific group!!! And Bill Deal takes second base to no one.
A couple of years ago i read in the Virginia Pilot about a guy in New Jersey who was billing himself as Bill Deal "of the Rondells". He played rock & roll revival shows around Philly & Atlantic City. He got caught when somebody from VA beach saw a poster and went to the show. He knew something was amiss, because, sadly, Bill Deal had passed away a few months before.
I was in college 70s. I came home one day & one of the guys up the street had this blasting out(1970). I can still remember that instant of time. Music does more for your mind & soul than any other art.
My son always says to me Dad,you're lost in the sixties...I plead guilty to that cuz of songs just like this one keeps me there. Thanks for posting this classic!!!1
@BillJoyce155 that isn't so bad. I born in 1982; never live the 60's but i love this music and i mean i thing only this are music cuz modern are only noise!
Quisiera haber vivido esa epoca o que la musica dejara de caer tan bajo. :'(
Great song, I remember it vividly. I'd play my older brothers' 45s when he wasn't around and this was one that I enjoyed the hell out of. Two things that struck me were the "Shoop-dooby-dooby, shoop-dooby" background which made this modern song have a doo-wop element mixed with all that cool brass, and the picture jacket showing how big this group was. Nine members! I burned a CD for my grade school reunion last year with this song on it, and several of my classmates said "I'd forgotten this!"
Several of your classmates had "forgotten this" because since "I've Been Hurt" was a hit during summer '69 it never, in my experience, made it on to any oldies shows or oldies stations. But the yucky Bobby Goldsboro tune, "Honey", did.
Thanks to YouTube we can hear it whenever we want.
I have heard "I've Been Hurt" on oldies stations over the years, but you're right, it doesn't get the play it should. I have a love/hate attitude towards "Honey;" the orchestration is nice and the melody is pretty, but it's such a schmaltzy lyric, it could IMHO turn the stomach of a cannibal! I was at a friends' house last weekend with several other guys, and when nobody was looking, I went on youtube and started playing "Honey." They ALL said "shut that s**t off!" LOL
The reason you don't hear it on the oldies station isn't because it came out in 1969. I been listening to the oldies since 1993, back when they still played alot of doo-wop. And even then I heard songs from early 70's, like Edison Lighthouse, the beegees before they went disco. The reson you don't hear the wonderful Bill Deal is because the oldies are stuck on playing the same top 20 crap over and over. May I...peaked at #39. I've been hurt...peaked at #35. What kinda fool...peaked at #23
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That "crap" is still played every weekend even now. Sure there were the songs that you liked are linked to the early 70s but who remembers them around here. SE Atlantic states people anchor their minds every weekend to songs that takes you back to the beach & fun in the sun. Some of this music goes back to the early 50s. What other continuous genre of music can do that? Beach Music will always be around but what about those you're talking about? Nobody remembers them on the weekend.
OMG! I laughed so hard reading this, I always thought "Honey" was such a sappy, mandy pandy song, It really did turn my stomach when I heard it, I couldn't change or turn the radio off fast enough when it came on! Thanks for the great laugh!!!
Don't take all this too seriously. Beach Music is about being loud; movin' on the beach for me is 43 years ago. There is a lot of good times in these songs. Beach Music is about remembering what kind of fun you've had. I thought "Honey" was crap and I still do. I can't ever remember hearing this song on radio around here. There are Beach Music tunes that are crap but it's not about some religious/ philosophical enlight
Still love it!!!!!

Philly Sound? These guys were Beach music and played from Virginia Beach to Jacksonville... Not even remotely Philadelphia. They were Southern boys.

In the mid 1970's, Middle Tennessee State had a football coach named Ben Hurt. Guess what song the band played at the games? You are correct, sir!

I burned a CD for my grade school reunion last year with this song on it, and several of my classmates said "I'd forgotten this!"
gazork123 3 years ago

I was at a friends' house last weekend with several other guys, and when nobody was looking, I went on youtube and started playing "Honey." They ALL said "shut that s**t off!" LOL
gazork123 3 years ago
The reason you don't hear it on the oldies station isn't because it came out in 1969. I been listening to the oldies since 1993, back when they still played alot of doo-wop. And even then I heard songs from early 70's, like Edison Lighthouse, the beegees before they went disco. The reson you don't hear the wonderful Bill Deal is because the oldies are stuck on playing the same top 20 crap over and over. May I...peaked at #39. I've been hurt...peaked at #35. What kinda fool...peaked at #23
