If I had been in place in Mr. Gordy, I would have made Diana the official lead for marketing purposes, BUT, to give everyone a fair chance to shine, i'd record more 3-lead parts and a few songs with Mary and Flo on lead(more than 1 per album), plus allow them to sing lead live at least on the broadway covers. Also the special albums like Christmas,FunnyGirl,SamCooke,CountryPopWestern do EQUAL number of leads for all. I bet Flo would have never left the group in 1967 and make 3 big stars, not 1.
@kingnando I agree. However, I think at least one lead song by Mary and Flo would have been great. Even if the policy would have been one solo lead for Flo every album and one solo lead for every two album for Mary would have been ok. Mary and Flo should have been featured on more leads during the concept albums and live shows like you said. How could they not release Flo's lead on the Christmas songs beats me. They were best at the 3 part harmonies. Good rival any other group on that:)
I'm going to make a break with tradition, and agree with the Ross fans. Diana did a great Job on this and i think the song sounds fantastic. But, It would have been nice to hear a trial run with Florence doing lead. But that won't happen. Sadly.
what supremes lp is this on...I was skepticle because I love Sam and Lou Rawls version but this is good. Especially for Diana who plays down her soul in a lotta records
The original preformer of this song,Sam Cooke was one of the greatest soul singers, and somebody ross does it no justice!Flo should of sang this song hands down. The fact gordy put somebody ross on as lead proves how clouded his judgement was with the ongoing affair with somebody ross.

Well you take your money, and start a record company, and you can make the decisions about who sings what. Berry had the right to make any decision he wanted. It was his company. His decisions made him a multi-millionaire. What have your decisions made for you? lol
I dont care how much money he made!!This is just ONE of many many bad decisions he made involving the Supremes that ONLY benefitted somebody ross's career and their love affair!!
Bad decision? How silly, immature, and and idiotic. The Supremes with Diana on the lead made millions and more for Motown. They had a cross over appeal that none of the other groups even imagine. You revisionist want to change history. Unfortunately, that is never going to happen.
Silly..not even close,idiotic..never,immature..well your the one name calling.Yes the Supremes sold millions:Florence,Mary, and somebody ross.We don't know and never will how successfull they would have been from the beginning had one part been removed. What we do know is that with Flo they had 10 #1's in 3 1/2 years, and without her they barely put together 2.Look i stand by my OPINION somebody ross was ALL wrong for this song.Florence Ballard should have sang lead.Live with it!!!(R.I.P. Flo)
Berry made many right decisions. Lets not take that away from him. He was right in making Diana the lead singer. However, in doing so, he made the mistake of not keeping Flo on a few leads. She definately had the voice. I think Diana did a good job on this song as lead singer. It would have been nice to hear Flo on it too. Although Flo had the lead on Ain't that good news, she should have sung on A Change Is Gonna Come too. I think at least 1 one per album should have featured Flo on lead.
Come on Clipperc4, if you were a business man, wouldn't you want to put your best product out for your customers, to generate the most sales possible. Why would you risk loosing sales, to experiment . Diana Ross talent was a proven sales maker. Flo''s was not. Good business people want sales...Berry did the right thing...History would agree with what he did..
@Strausd2 Gordy made some good decisions. People look at those and think he was some kind of genius and ignore that he was wrong a lot of the time too (He wanted to can What;'s Going On).
For commercial reasons yeah, having Diana on lead made a lot of sense, but albums (and live shows) would have benefitted with a lot more Mary and Flo.
And even on the singles the ones with better backing arrangements are more memorable than the Diana centric ones.
Again Thank You SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!! I had the album and the CD, and one day, my home was robbed, and they took it all, I had the album in a frame, never opened and cd was openned, I should have made copy of from the cd. :(
Never heard this before. Great!
