I watched both the Studio Canal dub and the Disney dub of the movie and I have to say that I liked the Studio Canal dub more than the Disney dub. I felt like the Studio Canal dub fit the setting of the movie more than the Disney dub and that the Studio Canal dub did not try to overexaggerate the character's voice unlike the Disney dub.
After seeing the end of this trailer, I cried a little inside "Available in English and Japanese with subtitles at select cinemas."
Why is it that here in the U.S., if I want to watch a film in its original language, I have to find an alternate way of watching the movie instead of at the theater?
I know one thing, if I can't get the Japanese music on Blu-Ray (just hit theaters in U.S.) I'm not buying it for home release.
Why didn't they just release this one in America? Honestly, I was SO excited to go see Arietty the first day it came out, but the fact that I always see Brigette Mendler and David Henry on tv, it ruined this movie for me! Disney totally downgraded Studio Ghibli by letting them do the voices..
I love English accents and it fits the setting unlike an american accent (since the creator of The Borrowers is in fact English). Also the voices sound better, not so over the top like the Disney dub that just sounds annoying.
anyone know where I can buy the UK version of this here in the US? I tried Amazon.uk and no one will ship here...I saw the US version in the theatre today, but I will prefer the NON-DISNEY cheese. why must they shove the little disney "actors" and cheesy music down our throats? makes me lactose intolerant...studio ghibli would do just fine in the USA w/out Disney!!!
@TheOathtoOrder The US dub actually retains the entire original japanese soundtrack for the most part, except for the addition of a couple songs. All in all, Disney has treated this film with respect
@Syedaxox They added a voice over, changed the character's names, replaced parts of the soundtrack and replaced the ending song with this: /watch?v=XDr58CXEa0Y
@droppingpenny they just changed a couple things then. that was bound to happen. north american culture is different from japanese. I think the movie was adapted for other places too, not just by disney for the US. given everything, they seemed to be respectful towards the original (note: I haven't actually SEEN the original, but the north american version felt to me like it still had that studio ghibi- feel. correct me if I'm wrong)
@Syedaxox Well, yes the U.S. is not the only country that got an adaptation of Arrietty, just like all the other Ghibli Films, but U.S. is the only country that got a changed version. Call me stupid, but every other country managed to make their adaptation of this film without any changes whatsoever and I think with that they were much more respectful towards it, than Disney. But the movie probably still retains the "Ghibli feel" to it (haven't seen the whole US dub of the movie)
The only thing I hate about this trailer is how they flat out give away the plot in a corny clique nursery rhyme. The American trailer only gives you hints of what's going to happen.
Oh boo the fuck hoo. It's a movie, a brilliant one by the looks of it. Who the hell cares about the voices, Disney, and whatever other shit all of you are talking about. Like honestly, that's all I ever fucking see on youtube videos is people arguing, saying shit about the video, or being so damn negative. It annoys me to have to see that crap on every single video I come across on youtube.
I am English but I am just as excited for the Disney dub as I was for the StudioCanal dub. I guess the only thing which annoys me slightly is that too many stories set in Britain have been set Americanised when they are adapted to film. Matilda anyone? Coraline? And no, I'm not one of those people who hates America just because it's America. Nevertheless, I think Disney's version still looks cute and fun. Can't wait to see it!
I really want to compare the British dub to the American dub. I watched Arriety in Japanese before, and Arriety's voice in the American dub was way too spunky. Her Japanese voice was more subtle and she was strong without being over the top.
the marketing is soooo much better in this version. it actually has european sounding music rather than the stupid hipster trash present in the american trailer
The American version changed the characters and ruined so many subtleties that make Miyazaki's movies beautiful, Arriety sounded almost rude half the time and "Shaun" sounded like a full grown man.
What's with all the bitching, if you live in the UK watch this, if you don't like it watch the Disney dub. If you live in America watch the Disney dub, if you don't like it watch the UK dub. The trailer that contains the Disney dub doesn't have any of this complaining.
If you watch Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro you should watch this. It has it funny moment, it has it sweet moment and of course even though it not magical it freaken awesome. I watch the japanese version man I love it.
I would only ever watch the UK version (and I live in the United States). Why? Because Saoirse Ronan is the main voice actress! And from seeing this trailer, the voices suit the characters much better than they did in the American trailer!
Can someone please explain to me? This trailer is for the UK version? And the UK version is different from the US version, even though both are in english? I live in U.S. and the movie comes out tomorrow and I wanted to go see it but not if its not this version here. I want to see the one with Saoirse Ronan as the voice of Arrietty. =)
And its not our fault Disney takes credit for films they don't make. I actually hate that, but at least they give us films that are the same as the originals.
Surprisingly, not many people realize that the original Japanese trailer almost gives you nothing. Nevertheless, the movie was a big hit in Japan two years ago.
Personally the US (Disney) is giving out too much and is destroying the aesthetic of exploring the story as you watch, and they didn't use the songs by Cecile Corbel in the OST, which is a very bad idea. The mood you can get from US trailer is nothing close to the actual movie (assuming that they didn't change the background songs too).
I personally loved the original in Japanese better than the voices in these remakes..but Disney tends to do a pretty good job at reeling the viewer into actually want to see the the film whereas this trailer seemed a bit lacking. Probably because of the rhyming voice over.
The reason why this version is favored over the American dub is because as with MOST American dubs of foreign releases, the acting is ham-fisted and over the top in order to appeal to children. Most American dubbing has lost any form of subtlety in favor of talking down to children presuming that they can not discern the difference. The problem is that a generation of children raised on low standards crap will eat up the American dub so it becomes a vicious cycle. Ghibli films deserve better.
oh wow...i always stick to original but this dub have emotions moreover its sounds directly from movie, unlike others which sounds like 3rd person speaks beside me.
Oh, I love this trailer so much more than Disney's! And the accents really add to its atmosphere. Settled then, this is the version I have to purchase next! I have the Japanese box that comes with the three Asian dubs, and I'm in love with this version of the story! Miyazaki's team did beautiful things with the concept!
Personally I think the American version is way better. This Arriety sounds too weak/vulnerable. I guess that could be the point of her character since shes's small, but the American voice actress adds so much spunk to the character, I like it a lot more. And don't diss Disney for distributing Ghibli's film in the US. Without them noone in the US would even see these movies. And don't forget Disney used to make beautiful traditionally animated movies too. So WTF is with the Disney bashing?
@xxbluejay21 The Borrowers is a classic English story. Ive seen 3 adaptations of the Borrowers, two of them being the BBC productions and the other being the 1997 film. I have nothing against the American accent, nor am I patriotic in anyway, but an American sounding Borrower wouldn't work for me for those reasons. And yes, if you know the story Arrietty IS a very vunerable character, despite her attitude she only goes out borrowing for the first time during the story.
@Wobachski I guess we can agree to disagree? Personally I'm not a fan of the Borrowers. Just a huge fan of Miyazaki and Disney. I'll just have to watch both. The hard part will be deciding which one to watch first.
@xxbluejay21 i dot kow if you have oticed but the borrowers come from england so therefore they should be english, if they have the english accents it would be very english would it?
@xxbluejay21 I like the Disney trailer better too...I don't know, this one just makes me not want to watch the movie as much as the Disney trailer. I guess there's less action or voicing in this one?
@xxbluejay21 I've actually watch the Japanese version with subs and the british version and Arietty meant to talk with softness, and Sho's meant to sound younger like this. They basically keep the film the exact same but the USA one totally replaces lines and the voices aren't true, nor the personalities
@xxbluejay21 i think the disney bashing has to do with the fact that now they are using disney channel stars to play the lead roles without giving the part to someone who could do better
@TheTurtleKing100 I mean, Disney has also been able to bring in Liam Neeson, Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Dakota/Elle Fanning, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Kirsten Dunst, Michael Keaton, Billy Bob Thorton, and so on. They hardly limit themselves to Disney Channel stars, while bringing in the big names to make these magnificent films more mainstream to draw in American crowds.
well............i like it it like it alot and if disney wants to do this then let them i think it will be cool sooo if you dont agree with me dont comment on this comment im makeing and if the ppl who do think its a good idea comment on this!
AWESOME trailer! Well done to the British. Sounds much closer to japanese than the US version. If I watch this dubbed it'll definitely be this one. At least they don't advertise their own companies, such as Disney. :/
Ok, whichever company dubbed this film for the UK PLEASE dub future movies. Just finished watching the DVD of this, and it was so weird hearing British voices since America dubs most animes. No tween nonsense like you'd get with the Disney dub. And the Disney dub changed some of the character names! I suppose it's set in America instead of Tokyo as far as they're converned. UK dub wins this time!
At least Studio Ghibli is smart enough to give credit when credit is due (Most Disney movies ignore the fact that their movie is based on a novel or forklore)
Does that mean I have to import this dvd from the UK to see it? Or can I just watch it online?(I think most of the dubs are english(American) dubbed.)
It's crazy I was watching this film and I was like, you know, Arrietty looks like Hanna or the girl who played Hanna or plays the girl in The Lovely Bones. Then I was just seeing the differences in the UK and US version and surprisingly, I seen the name Saoirse Ronan as Arrietty and was like o__o ... Wow I got that on lock lol
dont watch the Disney trailer its a total spoiler fest and puts scenes of dialogue over the wrong scenes this one is nice and simple and dubbed in proper English like the borrowers is supposed to be
Honestly, how is it Disney can make potential masterpieces (though incredibly rare) yet they can't keep a dub simple? This UK dub is very beautiful (The US dub is alright but I preferred this version over it) yet they insist on making another. Am I missing something here people? :(
@eyeizarandummugga Lol Disney had nothing to with this film and Disney doesn't make potential masterpieces.. The Japanese do.. as this movie was created in Japan by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa. DISNEY only makes the dub and only license the movie for USA people to watch it.
@SeanChiruchi Okay first off i said nothing about them making this movie man, I know my anime and I know who Hayao Miyazaki is alright (I've seen his works before Disney started distributing) and second off forget you man I love my American animated films just as much as I do my Japanese.
@eyeizarandummugga Lol you make no sense, you said "how is it Disney can make potential masterpieces" and then you say "Okay first off i said nothing about them making this movie man" you just said "how is it Disney can make potential masterpieces"
I watched this already, but in Japanese. Ghibli studios never fails to amaze me. The setting, voices, and music are all marvelous. I especially loved listening to Arriety's song. I love it so much I memorized it. :D Highly recommended movie!
I didn't even hear about this until last night when I went to see Sherlock Holmes 2... I saw this huge poster with Studio Ghibli's art and I went all fan girl in the theaters.. -_-;; Comes out in Theaters Febuary.. 15th I think... And I always loved the concept of the Borrowers. Used to pretend to be one when I was a kid.
i think its idiotic that Disney is making an english dub when theres this great one here -_- sorry but i rather watch the UK version. The boy in the disney trailer sounds like he's 20. :|
@KristalElfstache hahah he sounds like he's 20 because for some reason they casted a 22 year old for the part in the US dub which I think is stupid. I don't care how old he really is, but if he sounds 20 why cast him to play a 12 year old..
@KristalElfstache I agree.....though technically he's played by David Henry who is on a LOT of Disney shows. So it's no suprise that they're using him for the lead boy. And technically he's 22. XD
sooo excited, the rest of the world has seen it already and us here in north america were made to wait a WHOLE YEAR past when it was supposed to be released here. I saw a huge poster for it at my local theater when I went to Immortals though! wooo!
I'm finally going to watch this tonight :D I'm so excited! I love these films!

@acjub What's British English? English is English. Any off shoot of it is simply just a dialect.

That will give you an idea of what the UK cast sounds like,
if you haven't already heard them.
Much, much better....

If the player is region free....
..the PS3 plays games from any region...
...they might also play movies from any region...
I didn't think about that.

Tozzywozzy01 1 month ago
At least Studio Ghibli is smart enough to give credit when credit is due (Most Disney movies ignore the fact that their movie is based on a novel or forklore)

Isn't this story base on some book? i remember a similar plot in a book I've read as a kid.

Does that mean I have to import this dvd from the UK to see it? Or can I just watch it online?(I think most of the dubs are english(American) dubbed.)
xXxSnowXAblazexXx 1 month ago
It's crazy I was watching this film and I was like, you know, Arrietty looks like Hanna or the girl who played Hanna or plays the girl in The Lovely Bones. Then I was just seeing the differences in the UK and US version and surprisingly, I seen the name Saoirse Ronan as Arrietty and was like o__o ... Wow I got that on lock lol

Honestly, how is it Disney can make potential masterpieces (though incredibly rare) yet they can't keep a dub simple? This UK dub is very beautiful (The US dub is alright but I preferred this version over it) yet they insist on making another. Am I missing something here people? :(

@eyeizarandummugga This was the version I watched then dude, thanks for that, it was an incredible film :).
metlaheadzander 1 month ago
@eyeizarandummugga Lol Disney had nothing to with this film and Disney doesn't make potential masterpieces.. The Japanese do.. as this movie was created in Japan by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa. DISNEY only makes the dub and only license the movie for USA people to watch it.
SeanChiruchi 1 month ago
@SeanChiruchi Okay first off i said nothing about them making this movie man, I know my anime and I know who Hayao Miyazaki is alright (I've seen his works before Disney started distributing) and second off forget you man I love my American animated films just as much as I do my Japanese.

BEOWULF9965 2 months ago
@BEOWULF9965 The Secret World Of Arietty
OjBlack59 2 months ago
@KristalElfstache hahah he sounds like he's 20 because for some reason they casted a 22 year old for the part in the US dub which I think is stupid. I don't care how old he really is, but if he sounds 20 why cast him to play a 12 year old..
Kait3Bear 1 month ago
@KristalElfstache thats because.... HE IS! it's soo stupid
Percussion97 1 month ago
@KristalElfstache I agree.....though technically he's played by David Henry who is on a LOT of Disney shows. So it's no suprise that they're using him for the lead boy. And technically he's 22. XD
