  • That was an awesome video! This summer I am taking a sailing class that is taught using the sunfish. How does the handling of a sunfish compare to that of a laser? I ask because I would like to learn to sail a laser (eventually) and am curious how easy (or difficult) the transition is from the sunfish to laser.

  • @sccard1 hey thanks... The transition from Sunfish to laser is pretty natural... they both are a single handed boat with one sail... the laser is round bottom, making it more tippy, especially down wind in heavier air... both are great boats, and whatever is most popular in your area, thats what you should transition into...

  • wow lots and lots of fishtailing that would get u ds-qd

  • nice video what were the wind conditions they looked lite but it rally gets exciting when i gets above 25 in the sunfish

  • Wow looks like fun

  • you sure used alot of rudder for such light wind, have you ever tryed the technique of placing the tiller extension on the deck and putting your hand on top of it so you use less rudder?

  • i have tried using that "pan handle" techinique, but do not find it good for me on a sunfish going up wind... i feel like i am too much aft if i do do that... in other boats especially if teh till extension is short, it is good....

  • That is the most fun boat to sail in my opinion I havent sailed a laser yet

  • that was a really useful bit of video, great to get the explanation text! Only thing I'd say was if you can get a camera pointing forward that would be even better, seeing the race from your point of view would add even more to it.

really good idea, think I'll do the same if I can next time I race.

  • This video is so much fun! Thanks! It's great being able to follow the action for minutes at a time -- and from a solo racer's POV, no less!

  • thanks for the nice words

  • I would like to try making the same kind of video on FJs and Lasers next year. How did you mount the camera and protect it from the elements?

  • i used a water proof olympus digital camera with video. i wedged it between some tight lines, trial and error... i also though of mounting it via the tripod screw and eith taping or bolting it on somewhere... i have seen other people use other video and wrap them in platic bags...
