Two of the greats right here!!! Perkins and Lewis...sure would have liked to have been around in the late 50's when they were knocking out shows for Sun Records! Awesome!
Just wanted to share ...some of Hungary's best rock'n roll singers. I'm almost sure they're nothing lower than these talented guys... just the language barrier and maybe the timing

poor old jerry lee always drops his name in the song, the man was obsessed with fame, how many songs did he make using reference to his name in the lyrics
That guitar is a Micro-Frets brand . Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad played one for a bit. They had a nut with adjustable intonation similar concept to the newer Earvana nut found on some ESPs.
@paul1060 Yes, indeed! I grew up on this and the Beatles, etc., and find that rock doesn't rock much now: it's pretentious 'poetry' by undergrads who want to show their literary allusions, and who can barely play their own stuff, let alone do justice to covers. Incompetent singing and dolorous dragginess are everywhere in alt. , and the rest is renamed disco.
My goal is to play my mandolin, the way these guys played. They rocked.
My father told me to look him up. You just dont find rock an roll like this anymore, do you. I grew up listening to 50s rock and what was then "oldies but goodies"
Not thet the bands of today dont have talant, but the put together bands of today just dont make me feel the way these guys do. So I repeat your question "Why do the great all die"
@gregoryfwood you need to do a search for rockabilly on here. there are TONS of bands out there playing in the 50s style with new songs. it's always been out there, radio just doesn't play it anymore.
@melkiemelkie I agree with you whole heartidly. These guys are dropping everyday. Three days ago we lose June Cleaver and today we lost Mr. Cunningham. I love life so much but i hate the way it always ends. Maybe Def Leppard was right "its better to burn out than fade away" Long live ROCK!!
@TubeNumber1 so who is rock and roll, then? elvis was gospel and country with some r&b thrown in, chuck berry and ray charles were playing country with an r&b feel, fats domino is a new orleans boogie player, buddy holly was rockabilly, ritchie valens mixed latino with r&b/rock n' roll, the beatles just imitated carl perkins and gene vincent in the beginning of their career. i think rock and roll is a mix of all these things and more, such as bluegrass, western swing, blues and classical.
I'm really not a purist, but Rock & Roll is white Country colliding with black R&B. White boys like Bill Haley, Elvis, and Buddy Holly, were Country cats trying to imitate R&B artists they heard on late-night black radio shows. Chuck Berry was a black musician playing uptempo country music with an R&B band. By 1957, yeah, all sorts of influences were showing up in Rock & Roll. Check out videos of Harry "The Hipster" Gibson - a wild white pianist from the '40s. He must have influenced Jerry Lee.
@TubeNumber1 i've seen harry's videos before, there's definitely some similarities between him and jerry lee (though jerry lee was even more wild). if you've never seen jerry lee's performance of whole lotta shakin' on the steve allen show... it is as wild as anything you'll ever see.
@TubeNumber1 I doubt Gibson influenced Jerry Lee. The only connection I see is that they are both white and have boogie woogie aspects to their music, which isn't much of a connection at all. Boogie woogie was extremely popular during the time of Jerry Lee's youth and if you listen to some of his early tracks you will see that he was strongly influenced by gospel and country music. He hung out in juke joints and I am sure he saw all kinds of show boating there that influenced him.
One extra point... Elvis tends to get criticised and always flagged up in these discussions because it's felt the other founders of rock 'n' roll don't get enough attention. That's probably the case, but it's not something to criticise Elvis for. He doesn't receive too much attention or credit - some others just don't receive enough.
Agreed, but one point is that for these guys, it was always about making music, for Elvis it was about the fame and fortune and the desire to be bigger and better, neither are wrong, just different.
When you say 'these guys' are you including Chuck? He's more obsessed with money than any of them. Elvis did seek fame and fortune, but largely to escape his impoverished background and support his family. He enjoyed the trappings of fame, but had little respect for money. I'm not sure it's fair to say Elvis wasn't about making music either. He was just interested in a broader range of styles than some of his contemporaries, and many therefore begrudge his move away from rock.
i think the most important issue for Elvis was after his family, his christian background, more even that the money and the fame. he always was talking about that, even he recorded all the christian music of his time.
Actually spooge1234, Perkins had his first single out a few months BEFORE Chuck Berry - Elvis around a year before Chuck. Seems to be a common myth about how early Chuck was compared to the other rockers. You're right that Chuck was recording before Jerry Lee though. Not sure what relevance that has though really. They brought different things to the party and were both important.
recordidng dates and record releases dont mean anything. Chuck berry perforning as early as the late 40s before he even was ever signed. Elvis and Carl Perkins couldnt top Chuck if they tried. A true King never dies.
Carl was actually performing in the 40s as well. The question is more what were they performing though? Neither were performing straight rock 'n' roll that early. I agree that Carl can't top Chuck. Elvis is another matter. Elvis has Chuck on versatility, voice and charisma. Chuck obviously has Elvis on songwriting and guitar playing. They were both greats and both very innovative. .
This blue guitar is called "Microfrets" and it was made in Frederick MD and in business for about 5 years from about 1971 to 76, until the owner died. I was living in cumberland MD and bought one at Chuck Levins. Neck was too thin.
Ego, Elvis. You are confused. Elvis was very humble. It was redneck Lewis that had the ego. Perkins was a good guy. Lewis was always jealous of Elvis. He even shot at Graceland with his gun. You are deffinatly confused
Dont get me wrong anyone. Jerry was a very talented guy and Carl was a fantastic musician. Later in life Jerry calmed down and became friends with Elvis. It just got to me for someone to say Elvis had a ego. That is so far from the truth. Elvis loved singing and making music. He always gave credit to the other artists. He didnt like being called the king. Although he was. He had to be pushed to record Blue Suad Shoes. He felt that it was his friends song and felt uncomfortable.....PEACE to all.
I dont care what anyone says. I would've loved to see this show. That piano playing is out of (sublimely in) control. Lot of tricks outside of the box. Guy to study if you like piano.
Actually if the five major one's from Sun Records were on this Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison it would really be rockin.
Roy Orbison was not one of the Million Dollar Quartet guys, and this was still six years before Elvis left us.... So they could have been united. I bet the egos were too big for something like that to happen at that time. The nearest reunion would be the recordings from Germany in the early 80s. Jerry, carl, cash. =)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Jerry Lee Lewis is a fantastic showman, but his piano solo here is all smoke and mirrors. Besides the fancy hand movements and foot action, his playing is nothing particularly impressive.
Carl Perkins' solo, on the otherhand, is absolutely amazing. He's a musician's musician. Nothing against Jerry, it's just hard to compete with a master.
It´s the simple things that is hard to do. Less is more! But than again. Music is not competetion?? Music is feelings. Not playing as complex as you can.
Well said, bluesbennit. My comment wasn't meant to disparage Jerry Lee Lewis, I just wanted to note that Carl Perkins is in a league of his own.
Jerry Lee Lewis' solo certainly has it's own charm and qualities. Great video, though. I enjoyed it a week ago and I enjoyed it again today. Long live Rock 'n' Roll!
The fancy hand movements we see here are producing fantastic music. I would love for you to post a video of your singing and piano playing talents as an example of impressive piano playing.
Hey man, I'm not trying to compete with Jerry or Carl. They're both fantastic musicians, and trust me, a video of me playing music would pale in comparison to this fantastic performance. I was just trying to make a critical comment about the music. No disrespect to Jerry; he's a great Rock 'n' Roll pianist.
I think most people get used to reading rude comments that have nothing informative to say, so anything that's slightly critical creates a strong backlash. I wasn't trying piss people off.
That blue guitar is difintely a Microfrets, made in Frederick, MD. I had one when I lived in Cumberland about 1973. I really liked Carl Perkins..he had much more talent with a guitar than Elvis.

Rock & Roll was the marriage of White Country and Black R&B. Elvis was a Country boy doing R&B. Chuck Berry was an R&B cat dabbling in country.

Elvis, ego? What the hell are you talking about?
illusionistdave 2 years ago

I think he is the most underestimated guitarist of all time.

I dont care what anyone says. I would've loved to see this show. That piano playing is out of (sublimely in) control. Lot of tricks outside of the box. Guy to study if you like piano.

Pity the other two from "The Million Dollar Quartet" aren't on here, it would truly be a great performace then, thank you !

Actually if the five major one's from Sun Records were on this Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison it would really be rockin.

It already is a great performance...

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Jerry Lee Lewis is a fantastic showman, but his piano solo here is all smoke and mirrors. Besides the fancy hand movements and foot action, his playing is nothing particularly impressive.
Carl Perkins' solo, on the otherhand, is absolutely amazing. He's a musician's musician. Nothing against Jerry, it's just hard to compete with a master.

bensmith3200: try to copy JLL note for note. It's the timing that matters.

Only "The Killer" could get away with using his feet to play the piano.

That blue guitar is difintely a Microfrets, made in Frederick, MD. I had one when I lived in Cumberland about 1973. I really liked Carl Perkins..he had much more talent with a guitar than Elvis.
