  • His slower ball is faster than what most bowlers fastest one is these days :)

  • That decision to give David Steele out lbw was a SHOCKER!! Far too high.

But Andy Roberts was a great bowler, and a perfect foil for Michael Holding and the late Malcolm Marshall.

  • Would love to see clips of Wayne Daniel and Sylvester Clarke - they were probably the fastest of all the WI fast bowlers.

  • @NotAGooner even so, he bowl was very quick, and bounced very high and dramatically. He once cracked a man's head open with his bowl, and took 4 of Ian Botham's teeth.

  • Not as fast as Charlie Griffith or Wes Hall ;-)

  • Rabbart....as Loin Ajit would have called him........is one of my most fav. West Indian fast bowler. The pioneer and main bowler responsible for the domination of the West Indies in Mid 70s upto mid 90s and for the demolition of oppositions with effortless ease. In spite of being a frontline bowler, was kept out due to injury/Kerry Packer era as well as at a later stage due to emergence of Malcolm Marshall and a few others. He decided to retire after he was not picked up for the 1984 tour of Eng

  • he would have tormented sachin no end!

  • His best weapon was change of pace, without making even slightest change in his action. Ajit would have called him Raabart.

  • Poor England were children against such an onslaught

  • The intimidator! Could be the only time he smiled on a cricket field 1:06 . Damm! we used to run things in those days!

  • my favourite fast bowler of all time. skillful bowler

  • wish i could witness cricket in the 60-70s.......but lucky enuf to follow sachin tendulkar......coz he joined the team when i was 1 year old....it is always great to belong in eras having great players like viv richards, andy or sachin, lara, kallis....

  • AIMANALI - saw this test as a 12 year old , roberts was truly sensational on the fastest ever wicket in cricket history , its not like that now just another flat even pitch. the windies destroyed thommo and lillee with a unbelievable assault on them scored nearly 600 from memory but paid a heavy price in the next 4 tests as thommo broke the mighty windies batters with unbelievable pace - rod marsh and slips were 10 metres further back than derreck murray to roberts and holding

  • LOL @0:31 Richie Benaud goes "that is great concentration" ... and then BAM!

  • it was a gentleman's game back then....

  • @baptu1988 Like hell! Andy was quiet, almost taciturn, but he was in his own way, brutal. According to Tony Greig, Andy had two bouncers - a slower, powderpuff one, and a quicker one. The thinking being to sucker the batsman into the hook with the powderpuff one, then give him the quicker one later and find the top edge. Or rearrange his jaw should he miss it, like David Hookes. I suppose for Andy, it was just another way of getting to a new batsman.

  • another failure for Tony Greig what a rippa bahaha

  • I remember Andy Roberts well. I was so impressed I modeled my bowling action on his. Andy had that rare talent, like that other underrated bowler John Snow of making the ball do nasty things on even relatively placid wickets.

  • If Hall was the first of the modern West Indies fast bowlers, Roberts was certainly the big brother of the breed that conquered the world - the set that included Holding, Croft and Garner. Known for his well-disguised bouncer, Roberts took 202 wickets in 47 Test matches at an average of 25.61.

  • who can forget the perth test in 75/76 when he destroyed the great aussie side in the second innings , sustained contolled pure pace on the fastest wicket in the world , made me a andy roberts believer forever - a fair dinkum legend.

  • @isafella1 have u seen that footage ?

  • Awesome, I didn't know Alistair Darling played for England at cricket

  • David Steele's LBW looked high to me

  • man he was quick

  • OMG they didnt had helmet during 70s......scary

  • I am glad that you noticed that. 70's and 80's were the era of great TEST players, express face bowling, against brave batsman. A lot of the modern "greats" would not have survived. Today they are protected with the one bouncer per over rule, power plays, helmets, chest pads, arm guards, etc. which has taken away the element of fear, so they are able to bat all day and play their shots - often with very poor techniques. But i'm glad that you picked up on that.

  • @mofficer65: Thank you and I was thinking those exact thoughts seeing the clip of Brian Close against Holding. "Stars" of today like Sachin and Ponting wearing helmets against likes of Abdur Razzaq... Shoaib and Lee great bowlers any era no doubt. But if they bowled 100mph Holding was faster...

  • One of the most crafty fast bowlers ever!

  • The Antiguan Assassin!

  • :26 "Great Concentration" LBW Immediately! lol

  • He is one of Sunnys favourite Fast Bowler and one of the best friend also.

  • i think andy roberts has the most beautiful bowling action...just poetry

  • do any one have the video of kallicharan and lawerance rowe at the oval settint the record between them

  • thommo is the quickest if you think otherwise then you know nothing about cricket, west indies should be ashamed of themselves if they wern't so lazy and un commited they would still be churning out fast bowlers like holding, roberts and co!!

  • Clive Lloyd is to cricket what Horace Grant is to the NBA

  • In my opinion Malcolm marshall was the greatest bowler out of all of them

Followed closely by roberts and holding

  • I would like to request the person who posted this video to remove the comments of lunatics with zero-cricket knowledge who are deriding these great fast bowlers and claim that Shoaib Chucktar is the best.

As a genuine fan of fast bowling, I find such comments appalling!

  • i admit shoib is not better than marshal, roberts, lillee, thomson and holding.

but he bowled the quickest delivery ever in international cricket. so he is fastest bowler of the world.

And another thing india never produced a single fast bowler having speed more than 90 miles an hour. so they have no right to coment on these genuine fast bowlers including shoib akhter.

  • If that makes you happy, buddy :)

    Peace,

    Imran

  • Michael holding wasthe quickest bowler even when thommo was around!

Hadlee was not as great as marshall or halfthe west indian team or lillee or imran khan who also carried the bowling attack for his team!

and to all the thomson fans he was just an over rated bowler quick bowler who likes to blow hisown trumpet who everybody seems to think was the quickest when people never wore helmets or adequate padding can you imagine anyone going out to bat against shoaib lee or bond without a helmet!

  • thommo was fast but his accuaracy left a lot to be desired. i think hadlee could be quite formidable tho. i think garth leroux was up there to for pace and effectiveness

  • but it is reality my dear friend. if india have then plz tell me the name of him.

  • It is you who are making this a national issue. I never said my country is famous for producing fast bowlers.

The point is we are discussing about the video of one of the greatest pace bowlers here and your comment that being an Indian I have no right to comment on genuine fast bowlers was uncalled for!

This is my last comment here. Stay happy:)

    Imran

  • fuck off dickhead tommo had a far better action, bowled off 15 steps and was still quicker than drug cheat chucker akhtar.

  • listen you retarded fool no1 asked thomson to bowl of 15 steps fact akhtar has all the quick ball records and is the quickest bowler in history just because you like thomsons blonde hair and white skin and want to kiss him doesnt matter fact is fact and your horse shit opinion is retarded so talk to some1 who cares as your points are pathetic so go away and get a life you moron!!!

  • Probably you get from my username that I am from the same ethnic descent as you.

I am crazy about neither 'blonde hair' nor 'white skin' and still say that Shoaib Akhtar doesn't deserve mention in the same breath as Roberts, Marshall, Hadlee, Holding, Lillee or Thomson or any other GREAT fast bowler. I hope you know what 'great' means.

Neither 'Chuck'tar nor Brett Lee are cut from the same cloth as the great men I mentioned.

  • We are discussing about bowlers and not about chuckers.Shoaib and Murli has had a long career just coz of Dalmiya. And Shoaib himself had acknowledged it a while back.Thommo was the quickest ever and he bowled in excess of 100 as he himself has admitted in one of the interviews. The measuring equipments were not as advanced as it is today and also the measurments were not done at the point of release as it is done today.

  • His action doesn't seem the greatest but truly at the moment of delivery he creates a lot of pace with a clean action. Thommo's action, to be frank was weird. Akhtar's action has a lot of criticism but he holds the record on number. There might be some tribal guy in some forest who can bowl a tad fater than Akhtar, but it's not on the books... So stop whining.

  • @tjdoss Different speed gun measurements ...you can't compare speeds. From what i know about sports, it is the smoothness that matters the most. All great pace bowlers have that in common, no matter how different their actions. Andy was smooth as any. To me Akhtar was as quick as Andy BUT Holding & Thommo were a shade faster (at their fastest of course).

  • @tjdoss There might be some tribal guy .....A "tribal guy" might have the talent but that is not enough - you need to have the right temperament to put in extreme effort on a consistent basis to bowl and train how to bowl and than actually full fill that talent that you think you have. What I mean is: the fastest bowlers are the ones that HAVE bowled the fastest (thommo, Akhtar etc ) not someone who MIGHT have or could have etc etc - they do not count even if they exist.

  • Thommo was the quickest ever Lillee was the smartest.

  • my child hood hero

  • Bowling is speed technique intelligence. According to Dickie Bird, Hadlee was the smartest bowler he ever withnessed. In the 70s reading was done fromthe batting end. That was 22yds after the bowl was thrown. Bowler of that era clocked from high 70s to high 80s mph. With he exception of Jeff Thompson who clocked high 80s to low 90s. Today the reading is down from the bowler end. Back then didn't play much, so they could keep the pace. Now the bowler play a lot, hence ball slow to aviod injure

  • that's horseshit

  • Hadlee was not even close to being the best. Most of his wickets came @ home and on seam-friendly pitches. One only has to look at his wickets in Asia and that'll tell the story as it is. Andy Roberts and the rest of the WI fab four (Holding, Marshall, Garner) were way better than any of the Aussies or Kiwis (Thomson & Hadlee inc.)

  • Hadlee was never a tearaway. He relied more on swing n seam.Same with Joel Garner. The most dreaded bowler to come out of WI was Sly Clarke.Almost all the top class batsman of that era had admitted that.Even Viv Richards was not comfortable facing him.We couldnt see more of him ..thanks to the life ban he got for going to SA.

  • same with roy gilchrist that guy was mad.

  • Joel Garner was a great fast bowler, not because of his pace so much, but because of the amazing bounce he got, delivering from his height

    -around 6' 8inches I believe

-quoting Geoff Boycott (yeah give me your predicted flak, I dont care-great player)

Same applies to Flintoff in modern generation

-he is quick, but its not so much the pace, but the consistent accuracy and bounce he gets as he is 6'6 inches tall I believe

Joel Garner presented the same problems

  • Yes he was 6'8''.He extracted good bounce and also had a deadly yorker too. I remember in the intial years of Ambrose, he drew comparisons with Garner ..coz of the height, bounce and yorkers.

  • Allow me to comment on that. It is true that Marshall, Roberts and Holding took wickets in the sub-continent and they will always have an edge over Lillee and Hadlee because of that.

But do not forget that Hadlee (like Kapil) was a 1-man army and often single-handedly led his side to victory. Also his avg. is better than them all, barring Marshall. He was more economical too. I would say Hadlee was just behind Marshall but ahead of the other West Indians or any other bowler, for that matter.

  • @vpadmana hardeee is a wanker

  • @vpadmana Yep I agree--though imho Hadlee was still very good, better than Thomson, who was in turn better than Lillee. Lillee for all his skill couldn't perform jack on wickets without assistance--not to take anything away from him, but he was overhyped because of the Ashes memories and warn't a patch on the fearsome pace quartet (of which Roberts is my favourite)

  • @1137moiz that is not true Lille was great on all wickets and please do not give me an example of the Pak tour of 1979 !

  • @vpadmana Not true, most of his wickets came against Aussie, in Aussie. He was a fantastic bowler, shrewd, quick when he needed to be, the best in the world for quite a period of time.

  • @vpadmana True but understand that on those Aussie and Kiwi wickets Hadllee was better than any and that must count for something. Even Akhtar was not that effective in Aus like thommo or Lille were - as an example

  • @vpadmana you arguement is not based on fact all these cricketers windies and aussies and kiwis you mention all took alot of wickets each and averaged mid to low 20s per wicket they were all great and played in successful teams in an era when most countries were competitive ( no bangladesh and zimbabwes to boost there records ). Hadlee was a fantastic bowler especially after the age of 30 , he also had no help from the other end like windies did to help add pressure.

  • The first time i've had a descent look at Andy Roberts and like everyone else i can't help but be greatly impressed! Oh but why do some here observe this video and feel the urge to mention Akhtar!? Akhtar won't be remembered in the same light as this man,and another thing! He was'nt or is'nt the fastest bowler the world has seen!?? My God learn your cricket!! Geoff Thompson, and Frank Tyson are the primary candidates for that title! So go envy Akhtar elsewhere!! Fools!

  • Akthar has officially the fastest ball in international cricket. There are many stories of bowlers bowling quicker but not proved. Mohammed Zahid was supposed to be quicker than Akthar but not proven and he had a short career.

Aboriginal Australian Eddie GIlbert was described as the fastest by Don Bradman. But being a black he was not allowed to play for the national team.

  • Yawn: amazing bowling .

Why did greig hit the wide ball to gully ?

Benaud was as blind as the umpire if he thought the LBW was close.

  • stellaviolens (3 days ago)

I wonder how you would have fared facing Andy Roberts without a helmet. He was feared by all batsman in those days. Feared and revered.

  • I might have headed for the exit. His short ball was hard to pick and on poor county wickets he was nasty to face so the story goes.

That lbw was marginal and greig was not in long enough to play the big shots, silly man. :-)

Anyone got John Snows bowling there then as I asked in the earlier post.

  • I think that Holding, Roberts, Colin, Garner were all faster than Lee, Shoaib and Bond.

  • Lee Shoaib and Bond were every bit as quick as the four West Indians you mention. Garner didn't have to worry too much about out and out pace most of the time. However the Windies bowlers were the best. Not only were they fast and athletic, but they were accurate and learnt how to deceive the batsmen with every trick in the book. NOONE could execute a bouncer or yorker better than these guys.

  • Imagine the Windies team if Usain Bolt stuck with cricket. Windies FTW

  • The first great West Indian fast bowler after the Wes Hall era.....this guy never showed emotion.

  • he could ball around 155kmh, must have been scairy for batsman without helmets

  • what a bowler.. wow.. take a look at how that first dilivery reared up. and his arm speed and agility is amazing for such a big guy. wow

  • theres the reason the fearsom foursome dominated....

  • u see those leg cutters??? id like to learn tht, i can only off cut it.

  • What, no hugging and kissing for each wicket? no high 5's? No hawkeye, not snicko, 200 replays of each wicket??

Ahhhhh.... cricket back in the day when it was still a sport not a business.

Saw Andy adn the Windies many times as a kid in Sydney at the SCG with dad... Loved every moment of it, what I could see of it at the time...

Any footage of Tony Greig gettin out is worth saving!

  • Roberts was an aggressive and dangerous fast bowler. He was much like modern day Shoaib Akhtar. But Shoaib is perhaps the fastest of all time.

  • Do not disgrace the great Andy Roberts by including his name and Shoaib Akhtar's in the same sentence...

Roberts could bowl 12 over on the trot and be deadly accurate and fast all the same. I doubt if Akhtar can get through 4 or 5 without pulling a hamstring or something.

I do agree, however that Shoaib is perhaps the fastest of all time, but please learn to diffrentiate between an express fast bowler and a great fast bowler.

  • Shoaib chucks a few, too.

  • I believe the same. To the naked eye, Shoaib chucks the short ball at times that rears off from a length.

  • I met his uncle when I went on holiday funnily enough, and I wanted to find out more about him.

  • i dont get it lol... he delivers far away from the stumps yet still it pitches in line n the batsman is out. maybe in those days u got away with it.. tough luck ntini lol

  • and also they seemed a lot more handsome back then too ;)

  • this man is a legend, an absolute champion

  • it is hard to see his bouncer even in slow motion..

  • wow no head gears those days

  • Looks so calm when he takes a wicket. None of the screaming new fast bowlers do!

  • I wouldn't say complete because he rarely used swing and sometimes used seam. For him it was mostly shrewd changes of pace and raw aggression, like his very steep bouncer that earned him his wickets. But none the less amazing compilation, just seeing him in action would make a batsman shake.

  • i agree

  • AWESOME
