  • "6" isnt really a "Bad" number.. :))

  • the only things i could do on this lesson is just say "whew..whem...whew..whem...whew..whem..." :D

  • 1:22 is my favorite part!

    Awesome lesson!

  • I remember seeing him BEFORE he got noticed, playing in clubs around his hometown area! Like a club in Whiteoak, with a band he was in named "Mamoth" or "Giant", I do believe? Back in the 80's. We knew he was special then too ;)

  • he look likes the sheldon cooper...

  • Sigh why do you have to teach why cant u just play....nonstop forever!

:( u should just play for an entire episode .

  • he god of guitar and very faster.

  • he god guitar and faster.

  • His girlfriend must looove him..

  • @AvengedVg definately he can seduce her by playing guitar^^

  • I love the way he made his own style. i wanna do that!

  • Thanks Paul.

  • If God had a band, Paul Gilbert would be the lead guitarist.

  • His pinky could dominate this world ha

  • Paul is the man.

  • your humble highness...may god bless you!

  • Amazing... Congratulations...

  • it should be called PG TV

  • oooooooo........

  • sooo many notes there.

  • AWESOME!!

  • Where these lessons came from? I'd like to buy them all.

  • dosn't billy shean play bass though

  • @thisispissnmeoff he said that.

  • @element5333 Okay!

  • haha, "the muscles are the brain in that part... the natural feeling that ive developed in that part" that shred brain of his is obv in the fingers!

  • 2:46 wow, that's The Paul Gilbert Signature Lick! Sweet! I love the intarwebs.......

  • Anyone managed to work out the right hand tapping pattern?!! Got the left hand sorted but can't work out what the hell the right is doin' - I guess if Paul can't tell, what chance have I got!!!

  • its just basically using your finger in this ,case 2 frets up, tapping where you would upstroke with your pick :)

  • yeah thats pretty much it, except you tap twice for each upstroke, you can figure it out by listening to the pulse of it.

  • hahah he cant slow it down ! :))

    Awesome !

    in born talent :))))

  • I just love that "and all of his stuff was too difficult, so I made up THIS" yeah, that's just the definition of easy and slow, and not complicated :D

  • I don't know anyone can say anything negative about Paul. He and Steve Morse are arguably the two best guitar instructors out there, and their playing is just sick! Paul's probably the better teacher, and yeah, he shreds a lot, but he knows his shit, and EVERYONE can learn something from him, regardless of his/her style.

  • One thing i noticed (except Paul's very fluid technique) is that he looks a lot like Beck.

  • @Blade686 Absolutely true!

  • @Blade686 He DEFINITELY does!

  • try to learn most of the pauls licks and then you could play also this one...i did it;)

i have played guitar almost 2 years and paul is my best teacher;)

  • dude you should make a video and send it to my channel ive been playing like 15 month and i can play paul to :P

  • huadhuahusdhuas that's amazing

  • i like how he still has the old nut from when his guitar had the floyd

  • what differs Paul from all the other Guys is his ability to play all this crazy Things with a clean Tone...that drives me crazy every Time...

  • fuck this guy.. he is realy amazing..wtf

  • Paul is God !

  • "I apologize...but i cant play it any slower then that...really, i just cant."

    BWAHAHAHA!!!!

  • OMG man look at how his middle and pinky fingers just flutter effortlessly throughout that whole lick. Paul Gilbert is a beast!

  • he's such a good teacher I think

  • does he tap the sequence exactly how its picked? 232R24 3432R? or does the tap change the length and sequence?

    like T232R24 T343T2R

i find the picking annoying i wish he'd tapped the sequence a bit slower the first time lol

  • it goes E B C E C B A E B D E C D C B A.

  • uhhh, the first 3 notes are B C A. im not gunna continue the rest because youre already wrong.

  • @AstralOpeth

yeah thats for the regular part with picking. i knew that.

im talking about the variation where you add the tapped E.

  • these fringes on the fretboard ?... Is there any reason for it ?

Maybe someone can tell me :)

    thx

  • It'd be funny to see Paul play when he was just beginning

  • for eight years he was a rhythm guitarist that just did downsrokes!

  • No it thought he just did upstrokes because thats what he thought was all you could do.

  • yep your right, thats why i was so surprised when i first heard, my b

  • guys like the nicest coolest shredder ever

  • @SamTalmadge ...and very good musician singer & song writer

  • ... "your muscle-brain or whatever you'd like to call it" hahaha paul RULES!!!!

  • man this guy is so down to earth! i love him!

  • Pul Gilbert is not only an amazing guitarist and accomplished musician, but also happens to be a great teacher. The two are not necessarily synonymous. He's articulate, funny and the kind of guy you'd easily call a friend.

  • I agree. His lessons are articulate, and informative. Also a great funny guy. Even though I personally don't know him.

  • I've learned there's other ways to work this lick.

the arppegiation can be altered as long as the pulse remains the same.

  • who's better paul gilbert or bucket head?

  • paul

  • Paul Gilbert..

  • its opinion. paul is indeed faster. buckethead may know more different techniques

  • MrMeist, you are by far mistaken. Buckethead and Paul both play super fast, but Gilbert does more than chromatic taps. I like both of them, but I think that PG knows more techniques as well as theory.

  • well as far as theory goes, paul definately knows more. but buckethead excells in the slap technique, finger picking, and chicken pickin, along with his normal alternate picking style. correct me if i'm wrong. im just talking about ways he plays, i feel he is more versitile at some things.

  • I do think that Buckethead has more a diverse sound, everything from straight-up shred, to those really nice slow melodic songs on Electric Tears and Colma, to the Jazz sound he had in Dragons of eden.

buckethead also has more of a progressive feel to him.

  • yea, but buckethead can really be a dick. i sat through all of "in search of the", half of it was good, the other half was 12 minute long songs of just noise.

almost everything gilbert does is good in one way or another(with the exception of some of his sappy love songs) but even the boring stuff has appeal to some people.

theres some buckethead that no one sees value in, at all.

  • Yea, that is true.

  • although you make a good point, i strongly disagree. Yes Paul has some fantastic musical abilities to keep everyone entertained no matter what he does, Buckethead is a completely different person, "In Search Of The" was Buckethead's personally recorded and hand drawn albums, and yes only half of it is appealing to the ear, the other half you have to take into sense that it could also be art, which in my opinion i think it is, just art, it's his way of expressing his emotions is through his art

  • no way man gilbert all the way

  • I prefer Buckethead's songs to Pauls, though I haven't heard any of Pauls solo stuff... I don't really care for Mr. Big or Racer X, it's just hard for me to listen to. But it's a matter of opinion in the end...

Besides, Gilbert taught Buckethead, so it's gonna' be stupid to ask that question anyways. Every time you hear Buckethead playing you're hearing a little piece of Gilbert.

  • @Fr33zeblink actually pebber brown was buckethead's teacher. he gives lessons on youtube for free!

  • @GuitarsAmSuck paul gilbert gave lesson

too him aswell cuz on a video

of buckethead he just keeps saying how

great paul gilbert is and bucket even sounds like PG

  • @JUSTING101 Here's a quote from Pebber - "Buckethead was taught by several important guys - Max McGuire, Johnny Fortune, Mark Hammond and myself included. Paul was an important influence on his experiences as well - he learned the mechanics of playing from all of us but he developed his own ideas right away and took it to the max. I am fond of my old memories with the time I spent as I am sure all the other guys are as well."

  • @GuitarsAmSuck wow buckethead must of

been rich to afford all of that

  • no chops!

    ha ha

    nuts!!!!!!!!!

  • Nice guitar ibanez pgm-301 i believe...

  • Dude this guy plays in his sleep no jke

  • hes fucking awesome but i dont really like the tone/guitar sound. sounds kind of odd

  • every1 has there own "voice" on guitar i love pauls =]

  • Now I know why Buckethead is so good... having lessons with Paul is just... well, no words for it.

  • it's muscle memory paul :)

  • damn he does it like its all god. lmao. hes a bad ass

  • If you look at the styled of PG you notice that he plays pull-offs and hammer-ons instead of picking the notes. This leads to unique style and btw ..

    goddamit hes fast!!!!

  • How the fuck does he does this shit!!!???? Best teacher ever!!!!!

  • he is the best

  • Lmao I love the way Paul Gilbert likes to pretend he's not an Android! His speed patterns are insane lol

  • "For some reason, I just can't slow it down." Haha Ya, no joke! PG FTW!

  • yep Billy Sheehan master of the base since hes older later they rocked the world in mr big

  • I'm guitar player also...

But PG is so fantastic that when you see he playing, you can even think that is so easy make a sound like that. Even after many years playing gitar i have the same sansation when i see a god guitar playr like him.

  • Paul is my hero

  • my god.. he's the best..it's too fast..

  • zotyaaa:D:D csak nem magyar vagy?:D paul gilbert a kiráály:D üdv:P

  • i don't know what to say.......

the speed is fucking so fast!!!!

  • the classic paul gilbert lick

  • the man,the legend

  • ok i dont get the tapping part.. what does he mean by approximating?? a bit confusing

  • I guess it means that he would play something that was ALMOST the same

  • i know.. but the fact that he cant play it slow means that he just probably doesnt even know what hes playing and taps randomly. its not good for technique. he doesnt even teach us where to tap.

  • you could just pay attention. he says when to tap and its obvious where hes tapping

  • lol john :)

  • he knows exactly what hes doing.. and he teaches you exactly where to tap.

  • he means after you played the lick by picking it, use a tap where you would use an upstroke. like he said

  • i love this guy

  • He plays that tapping lick at the beginning of the Shyboy live performance by Mr. Big.

  • SWEET!!!! My new favorite tapping lick =D

  • oh crap i got it down!!!!!!

  • i get it its the same lick but insted of picking at the start he taps

  • aaah!!! he uses the same pick as me :O

  • eeeh!!! you uses the same pick as paul Gilbert:p

  • aaaaaaaaaah its tooo faaast :))

  • paul gilbert like culgilbert..haha

  • that guitar's trem has been filled in and it's converted to a hardtail.

looks like he's still using the locking nut without the locking pads? kinda odd.

  • yep

  • he prob keeps it to help the guitar stay in tune all the time, especially when he does some of those crazy bends.

  • actually there's no locking nut whatsoever on that guitar, it's just the below part of the locking tremolo. it acts as a regular nut

  • My gosh..Paul sir you're a guitar God,..you needn't give no reasons for whatever..Praise the Paul!!

  • wanna meet the guy who impressed u PG:P

  • sounds like galaga

  • "Using your brain muscle or uh muscle brain or whatever you'd like to call it..." haha

  • His hair should tour with Beck and Neil Young's hair

  • lol. "i cant play it slow. im too awesome."

  • damn his goood!....i cant play a thing that he used to play when he was 15!!!!!

  • pg is way to damn good. every time i watch this video i almost piss myself.

  • practice practice pratice. it's the only way you'll ever get good. the problem with me is...i don't have the time:( if I could, i would do it all the time.

  • long fingers, you caucasians

  • nah, I got caucasian friends who don't have fingers like that.

    It's really just Paul. Haha.

  • hahahahahah realy? LOL !

  • i think i shit myself at 2:45

  • Yeah, if he doesn't even know what he doing, I guess that even a hero like Paul could teach something wrong. It's just me, I try get it perfect.

  • bwhahaha of corse u cant slow it down, Cuz it has Billy's curse inside - such things can only be played fast MUhAHAha

  • paul i respect so much. not just because he's freaking nuts on guitar, he's taking time to make all the teaching videos on youtube. also he give so much respect to other artist and is so humble.

  • HE IS A LEGEND.

  • did anyone or could anyone tab this?

  • I tabs this(the left hand)

  • Is it just me, or does this lick he taught not sound like what he is playing? I watch his fingers start up at 3:30 and after he plays the first three notes on the lower string it looks and sounds like he doubles up the next notes with his middle finger. When you watch his fingers move for the lick when he plays it one-handed and two-handed at 3:40-4:00, his middle finger looks different when he does the two-handed part. It looks like it is doubling up. Is this just me?

  • probably not, but he even said that he doesnt really know what he's playing, its all coming from muscle memory.

  • id cut off one of my feet to spend a month learning from him in person.

  • how about a hand?

  • is that what he charges?

  • nice guy. he is a delinquent he snuck into clubs we shouldnt condone that...lol j/k great guy in person.

  • such a nice bloke

  • wasn't this the one referred to in GW as the "untranscribable lick"? and then underneath it was the transcription? anyway, it's great.

  • practice and you can play these riffs AND keep your nuts!

  • this was an amazing lesson!! he is a great guitar player!

and sheehan a great bassit too:)

  • Paul Gilbert is one of the few guitar players that talk with humour and recognisable talk about tecniques and licks...

  • I always wondered who influenced who with that tapping technique - if you look at videos of Sheehan and Gilber playing a song you see some strong similarities in their technique. But I had not idea it was Sheehan who inspired Gilbert.

  • so inspiring for me to hear from paul that he just used to admire a musician in a bar and manage to get to the top 10 shredders of all time :D

    he's so humble

  • paul gilbert is the cleanest shredder of all time

  • My god is it only me, or was this guy and Beck separated at birth???

  • I said the same thing! TOTALLY.

  • Jesus christ..

    thats just insane

    he is god

and he wrote this at 15?!

    Damn haha

and i like how he can't play it slow

"Sorry, My fingers only work at mach 12! I apologize!"

    Its okay Paul

    haha

  • damn id give my left nut just to play any of his fast riffs

  • I'd give both of mine...

  • lol "brain muscle, muscle brain, watever u like to call it"

  • thats like paul gilberts fav lick haha..hes so awesome

  • anyone know what DVD this is from?

  • does anyone know the settings of his amp for this?

  • its how i made sense of his batshit awesome lick, and i'll try to make a video of how i interpreted it...
