I remember seeing him BEFORE he got noticed, playing in clubs around his hometown area! Like a club in Whiteoak, with a band he was in named "Mamoth" or "Giant", I do believe? Back in the 80's. We knew he was special then too ;)
Anyone managed to work out the right hand tapping pattern?!! Got the left hand sorted but can't work out what the hell the right is doin' - I guess if Paul can't tell, what chance have I got!!!
I don't know anyone can say anything negative about Paul. He and Steve Morse are arguably the two best guitar instructors out there, and their playing is just sick! Paul's probably the better teacher, and yeah, he shreds a lot, but he knows his shit, and EVERYONE can learn something from him, regardless of his/her style.
Pul Gilbert is not only an amazing guitarist and accomplished musician, but also happens to be a great teacher. The two are not necessarily synonymous. He's articulate, funny and the kind of guy you'd easily call a friend.
MrMeist, you are by far mistaken. Buckethead and Paul both play super fast, but Gilbert does more than chromatic taps. I like both of them, but I think that PG knows more techniques as well as theory.
well as far as theory goes, paul definately knows more. but buckethead excells in the slap technique, finger picking, and chicken pickin, along with his normal alternate picking style. correct me if i'm wrong. im just talking about ways he plays, i feel he is more versitile at some things.
I do think that Buckethead has more a diverse sound, everything from straight-up shred, to those really nice slow melodic songs on Electric Tears and Colma, to the Jazz sound he had in Dragons of eden.
buckethead also has more of a progressive feel to him.
yea, but buckethead can really be a dick. i sat through all of "in search of the", half of it was good, the other half was 12 minute long songs of just noise.
almost everything gilbert does is good in one way or another(with the exception of some of his sappy love songs) but even the boring stuff has appeal to some people.
theres some buckethead that no one sees value in, at all.
although you make a good point, i strongly disagree. Yes Paul has some fantastic musical abilities to keep everyone entertained no matter what he does, Buckethead is a completely different person, "In Search Of The" was Buckethead's personally recorded and hand drawn albums, and yes only half of it is appealing to the ear, the other half you have to take into sense that it could also be art, which in my opinion i think it is, just art, it's his way of expressing his emotions is through his art
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think paul is more technically skilled, but Buckethead is more diverse and expressive in a lot of his stuff so it's kinda hard, Buckethead's probably my favorite :)
I prefer Buckethead's songs to Pauls, though I haven't heard any of Pauls solo stuff... I don't really care for Mr. Big or Racer X, it's just hard for me to listen to. But it's a matter of opinion in the end...
Besides, Gilbert taught Buckethead, so it's gonna' be stupid to ask that question anyways. Every time you hear Buckethead playing you're hearing a little piece of Gilbert.
@JUSTING101 Here's a quote from Pebber - "Buckethead was taught by several important guys - Max McGuire, Johnny Fortune, Mark Hammond and myself included. Paul was an important influence on his experiences as well - he learned the mechanics of playing from all of us but he developed his own ideas right away and took it to the max. I am fond of my old memories with the time I spent as I am sure all the other guys are as well."
But PG is so fantastic that when you see he playing, you can even think that is so easy make a sound like that. Even after many years playing gitar i have the same sansation when i see a god guitar playr like him.
i know.. but the fact that he cant play it slow means that he just probably doesnt even know what hes playing and taps randomly. its not good for technique. he doesnt even teach us where to tap.
practice practice pratice. it's the only way you'll ever get good. the problem with me is...i don't have the time:( if I could, i would do it all the time.
paul i respect so much. not just because he's freaking nuts on guitar, he's taking time to make all the teaching videos on youtube. also he give so much respect to other artist and is so humble.
Is it just me, or does this lick he taught not sound like what he is playing? I watch his fingers start up at 3:30 and after he plays the first three notes on the lower string it looks and sounds like he doubles up the next notes with his middle finger. When you watch his fingers move for the lick when he plays it one-handed and two-handed at 3:40-4:00, his middle finger looks different when he does the two-handed part. It looks like it is doubling up. Is this just me?
I always wondered who influenced who with that tapping technique - if you look at videos of Sheehan and Gilber playing a song you see some strong similarities in their technique. But I had not idea it was Sheehan who inspired Gilbert.
