why do youtubers need to comment on pavarottis or any world famous opera singers?? i just dont understand non of you will ever sing to their standards even on their worst days...can you not just enjoy the music
Charmer313, you are spot on with this comment. I am probably the closest thing to a professional opera singer in this thread (I sing in the chorus of a regional opera), and I can tell you that ALL of the stuff from the professionals at the real houses is high quality. In fact, even the stuff from student performances and community theater is good, for the most part. Yet there are all these critics who have never set foot on stage telling everyone where the professionals are wrong.
maybe not right place to ask, but I am very curious
I have seen act two of this performance (Tokyo 1971.) somewhere on the internet and it seems that Posente amore is not sung. Pavarotti (Duca) just walks off stage after "Duca, duca! Ebben..." . He sings "Ah, tutto il ciel non mi rapì!" and then the whole assemble just start "La ra La ra Povero Rigoletto" with Peter Glossop suddenly appearing. Can anybody explain this please?
This is prime Pav 1971...best Duke I've ever heard, and that includes the likes of di Stefano, Peerce, Bjorling and other lyrics...Pav's not my favorite tenor, but he's unparalleled in this role, my opinion.
Listen to Gigli for a paralleling in this particular piece. IMO Gigli is much better than Pava here for sheer beauty of voice, legato, diction, and power. But Pava is still stunning of course.
Pavarotti's voice suits the suit Duke more in my opinion. Pavarotti's legato and diction is at least equal to Gigli's in this quartet through my ears.
Pava's diction better than Gigli's? Man, just look at what Pava does with the i-s and e-s. He might supersede Gigli in some aspects (fiato, for one) but not in diction.
I did not say his diction surpassed Gigli's, just that I don't think it's fair to say that Gigli's is much better. Pavarotti's diction is just as precise, and he manages to keep his vowels more open than Gigli.
Fine, and I suggested that it is not as good as Gigli. (Look at how he pronounces Senti del core il palpitar.) Yet I repeat: this performance is great (& the 1966 is even better)
It is at certain points, it's not very noticeable and it probably happened because Giulini was dragging the tempo so much. The 1966 Florence version almost equals this one, the sounds is also better than the horrible boxy sound on the Rome version which makes the singers sound like their voicies are much darker than they were. It's especially noticeable on Scotto's voice.

Huge voice! OMG! I don't know if it is because I am drunk, but I don't find no tenor in you tube with this beautiful voice. Domingo sucks, go see Domingo in Tarzan cracking like a little bitch..
Anna di Stasio is the only one in Luciano's league here - he towers over everybody, and indeed most tenors in this role. His voice is smooth, fresh, incendiary...unrivalled.
I don't think it is his best though- he did get steadily better, before the inevitable decline in the 90s. His voice is very beautiful here but age did improve it.

Possente amor mi chiama was cut from the performance, as was common around that time.

truly Pavarotti in his prime. The days where he stuck to his fach rather than going for the heavier and/or verismo roles.

Who told you I am judging from this video?

Totally agree. 1966 was the better performance.
Nater389 2 years ago
I disagree, his rhythm is off in the 1966 one.

Not at all.
