In my opinion the player that broke biofysical rules: in the blink of an eye always intuitively chose the best (most direct) way to the goal. All in a strikingly elegant way, one of the most natural talented players ever. Haven't seen much of Pele but I think maybe 3 or 4 players ar on par with him. Defenders in today's game play much different then they did back then, I see a lot of poor defending and goal keeping in this video, whether it is because Van Basten is just that good or the defense is just that bad I don't know, but you have to consider the difference in skill and play style.
Training facilities and techniques have also changed. Rules have also changed. Most technical players nowadays would've had two broken legs if they played in the 70's for example. There's only one conclusion, players from different era's are incomparable.
@kelo6 I see a lot of poor defending in the modern game. Van Basten played in an era where Italian defenders were at their best. You have probably seen Maldini lifting the European cup at the age of 39 in 2007 and Costacurta won the 2003 CH L final aged 37, and they were not even the best defender of that terrific Milan back four, Tassotti, Costacurta, Baresi and Maldini.
There is not a team in today's game with the defensive quality of that back four.
Marco van Basten might have been the best player this world has ever seen if his career would not have been injury prone from the age of 25, with some great recoveries (basically the 1988 euro's was a recovery and he started as a sub) with his ankles being abused by serie A defenders in a time when the rules were somewhat easier on butchering defenders. If he could have made his move from a central striker position to somewhat more of a playmaker the world would have been even more astonished.

In my opinion the player that broke biofysical rules: in the blink of an eye always intuitively chose the best (most direct) way to the goal. All in a strikingly elegant way, one of the most natural talented players ever. Haven't seen much of Pele but I think maybe 3 or 4 players ar on par with him. Offcourse, today's game is faster, more closed so the 'skinny' types are rare. YNowadays. you have to be some kind of bodybuilding midget to be able to get hold of the ball (except for Peter Crouch)

@ming245 Do you think he would have the same effect now as he did back then? Remember, the style of the game has changed significantly since Van Basten's times. Defenders in today's game play much different then they did back then, I see a lot of poor defending and goal keeping in this video, whether it is because Van Basten is just that good or the defense is just that bad I don't know, but you have to consider the difference in skill and play style.

Training facilities and techniques have also changed. Rules have also changed. Most technical players nowadays would've had two broken legs if they played in the 70's for example. There's only one conclusion, players from different era's are incomparable.

@kelo6 I see a lot of poor defending in the modern game. Van Basten played in an era where Italian defenders were at their best. You have probably seen Maldini lifting the European cup at the age of 39 in 2007 and Costacurta won the 2003 CH L final aged 37, and they were not even the best defender of that terrific Milan back four, Tassotti, Costacurta, Baresi and Maldini.
There is not a team in today's game with the defensive quality of that back four.

Marco van Basten might have been the best player this world has ever seen if his career would not have been injury prone from the age of 25, with some great recoveries (basically the 1988 euro's was a recovery and he started as a sub) with his ankles being abused by serie A defenders in a time when the rules were somewhat easier on butchering defenders. If he could have made his move from a central striker position to somewhat more of a playmaker the world would have been even more astonished.

@blondstallion I totally agree with you. Defenders like Wierchowood,Bruno,Ferri etc.... killed his legs... what a player.. Van Basten is the best striker of the last 30 years. No Ronaldo,Messi,Ibrahimovic, Rooney.... no comparison. Van Basten is like a dream.
