@WaldoBlvd good question...how a killer like this got passed up is beyond me...that's why I threw this together with the goofy still pic a few years ago. I was the 1st to post this tune here on youtube.
Cool song. I asume, going by the lyrics, the subject is the singers father, .. but what he was ( a secret agent ? .. an adulterer ? ) remains an enigma. Interesting image there too. Don't know how the fuck it relates to the song, .. yet, none the less, it works for it somehow !
Fantastic up tempo tune! Big fat bass line, mean guitar playin' and Martha's powerful vocals. A great driving tune for those long trips down the interstate. Might make you want to put the pedal to the metal, though! The start of this one always makes me think of a tire burning 'burn out'!
An outstandingly catchy tune. I love this. The blend of the voice of Martha Davis with the exceptional band's instrumentals is awesome. Very tight. A flow of continuously appealing and fast paced music for moving and dancing. Sounds incredible on an excellent sound system. A blast to the past music of the early 1980's. Thank you for posting this musical masterpiece.
The album this is from, All Four One, is one of the 10 best rock/pop records of all time IMHO. Every song is good. Another overlooked record in the same category is The Completion Backwards Principle by The Tubes. Check 'em out, you'll be amazed how outstanding those 2 records are!
@onedrummer55 good call there i always loved outside inside by the tubes to prarie prince awsome drummer back then remember music was catagorized you had the metal stations new wave stations top forty crap and oldies only the top fortyesque only the lonely got noticed by top forty stations people like us had listen to the complete album to really appreciate it man there is so much out there that would blow the younger generations mind its sickening
One of the greatest rock songs of all time. I saw the Motels in the early 80's. Martha Davis came out in a full tux, by the end of the show she was wearing just black panties and a negligee. So hot. What a babe.
Martha Davis & The Motels were big contributors to the phenomenon that was the Early 80s. They should have gotten much more recognition than they did. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who remembers them. This song and Suddenly Last Summer both remind me of meeting and partying with the girl who became my first wife. These songs take me back to better days.
In the early eighties I had a very nice 240Z. I had this album on cassette. I was living on the central California coast. Lots of fast drives to Santa Barbara over the San Marco Pass on my own missions of mercy. Hearing it again now sounds so fine.
You are so right. I had two 240Zs and one 280Z. I look on Ebay all the time for the right old Z car. Easy to work on and fast enough. Parts are available and there is a solid network of clubs. One of these days the soft rumble of a straight six is coming back to my driveway!
The first one had been my parent's bought brand new in 1971 for $3711.00 and they had to wait months on a list to get it. The second one was a 1970 I bought from the original owner with 78,000 miles in 1981. The 280 was a 1977 model that was the centerpiece of a crazy relationship. The 280 was a great car and I drove it 300,000 miles plus. I was crazy about Z cars (mostly because I could not afford Porsches). A curving road, some great music and an old Z has a lot of appeal.
Born in CA-raised in S.F. Valley. Haven't thought about KROQ in forever! You've taken me back to another lifetime. Always loved the Motels, too. We used to do Only The Lonely-rocked at the time. Wish we still had music this good today!
probably will insult their fans, but this is the only Motels song I ever liked..and I LOVE it. They played Hollywood Park a few years back on a Friday night after the races and I waited just to hear this....and waited...heard all the hits that sound like the same song...and waited....they never played it.
Plus Martha looked like Monica Lewinsky, beret and all. but they WERE better than I expected.
This is a major kick ass tune, vocals and music together. I played the solo in a band I was in back when that came out. Back in those days I transposed the keyboards to guitar for a lot of new wave tunes before I got an arp solus.
@cb3961 To see where this still comes from, search for "Gutterballs" and you'll find a video clip from The Big Lebowski -- one of Dude's acid-flashback dream sequences after Jackie Treehorn slips Dude a mickey.
@cb3961 BECAUSE THE PERSON FELT LIKE IT ...YOU FUCKING FASCIST CUNT ..ITS NOT A CRIME ...THEY PROBABLY FELT INPSPIRED YOU FUCKING CUNT ...HOPE YOU DIE SOON
"The Sweet Escape," was a HUGE hit for Gwen. "Don't Speak," was big hit for her with No Doubt. But go back to "It's My life." by No Doubt. Listen a few times. Then listen to the original by Talk Talk. Then lookup ALL the Motels songs you can find in here... :)
Yeah, KLOS here in L.A. used to play this song quite a bit back in the day (82-83). Anyway, I'm still waiting for someone to post the "Take the L" video.

While Mission of Mercy may not have gotten the radio air time it deserved, I can tell you it got plenty of play in the dance clubs.

Why is there no vid for this song? It was less played on 80's FM radio than some of their other hits, but it was such a great tune.
