It would be very unlikely, given the amount of coding to do this, that it would just be a glitch. Youll find game developers do this a lot. Nintendo are especially notorious for hiding a bunch of little rare treats like this in many of their games for people to find.
@ADEdge Thank you, but I know this already. My point is, that this would be such a pointless Easter egg. Why would Nintendo make a Easter egg which hurts Mario? This is not Nintendo's style of Easter eggs. Plus, that there wasn't many Easter eggs back in mid-90s. I'm not saying you're wrong, but nor do I think you're right. I don't know, you don't know. But tell me - Why would Nintendo have it so when Mario ground pounds butterflies, they turn into bombs that homes in on Mario?
@mariosunshinefaan Most easter eggs are pointless, there just tricky quirks in the game. Just because it hurts the player doesnt mean it couldnt be an easter egg. & There were a lot of easter eggs in mid90s games, I used to spend hours in certain games simply looking for these types of things
And to answer your final question of *exactly* why they would do this, I cant, you cant for most easter eggs. It just seems a lot more plausible than a glitch, given nintendos history with easter eggs.
I wouldnt say its a glitch, but more of an easter egg the developers would have made on purpose.

@ADEdge I highly doubt this is something they put in on purpose.

@mariosunshinefaan Im highly confident that they did on purpose :P

@rbrsonicx in my opinion it's much easier to get the bombs to appear than the 1-ups
