I don't believe this would work in an actual traffic situation. The navigation systems are often a hundred meters of already and this needs precize on the spot action including detection and anticipation on other traffic. If this were used for real now, I wouldn't enter that thing!

@djaxefield It's not working by GPS alone - it would bump into every car and pedestrian on the way. That spinning thing on the top is a laser scanner that determines all objects on the way in every direction, and can tell apart road from sidewalk. In other words, do little bit of research before assuming that you know how a machine works.

The AI capable of all these does exist. Google DARPA and see what you come up with. They've gotten good results both in cross country and controlled urban setting, and Google is currently experimenting in uncontrolled urban setting with backup human drivers just in case. So far everything's gone remarkably smoothly.
