the coolest thing about 0 gravity during making these videos must have been the no need of a 3pod for his camera, simply let it where you want it ... no problem it stays there xD
Fascinating,I applied for tickets for the last three shuttle launches but was unlucky, will get there for a launch someday soon though, what a dream job.
as awesome as these videos by dr reisman were, i was surprised that more people didnt watch this. dr reisman probably has the most charisma out of the all the crew ive watched giving tours of the station so far, its amazing that more people havent watched this.
@KimCheeWarrior "i was surprised that more people didnt watch this"
It is to you and I. But there you go. It goes to show, whilst many people think it's impossible to become an astronaut, there isn't as much competition in reality as there is in their mind.
"When you do something well, no one will know you've done anything at all", God speaking to Bender, Futurama
@GreenFont Biological waste, as well has normal trash, is sent out into the atmosphere towards Earth where it burns up almost instantly, like a meteor. Also, the ISS is kept at a nice balanced temperature, just a tad colder than room temperature. More important than the specific temperature is the fact that it remains balanced. Space is cold, the sun is hot, so one side of the space station could be a couple hundred degrees above 0, while the other is a couple hundred below. Ouch.
@leaualorin The reason you cant see stars on a video is because the starts look faint in comparision to the ISS's lighting, so the cameras can't capture the stars due to dimness.
Theres alot of things that people would love so much to do, but when the do it, they eventually get bored with it, but i don't space is anything like that
@jared71322 Feces are put in a special (most likely airtight) container. It won't be that bad. And yeah, the air in there is filtered, otherwise they'd all die because of lack of oxygen.
@Th3Cynic cuz russian space program and nasa both buy their food products from distributers just like we do, so im sure neither greedy ass country wants 2 share im guessing... just like lil bratty kids and candy
They have mp3 players, and also have computers hooked up to the internet. So I doubt they are missing much music or movies. They probably sit there and watch people get knocked out on youtube like alot of us do, heh
Notice every laptop is a ThinkPad, and all of the media players are iPods... best laptops but not the best PMPs, there's ones with lower fail rates... but in 0g their HDDs are probably much less prone to death.
It's weird that this doesn't have more comments and that more people don't find our only space outpost more fascinating.
quisqueyatv: There's friction up there too, that results from two bodies interacting with each other and the amount of friction is dependent upon the roughness of those surfaces. That applies in zero-g as it does in a gravity well.
that's an ipod stuck to the wall at 5:33. But I thought the ipod hard drives have some kind of a fail-safe mechanism that parks the read/write probe when it detects a free fall.......the ISS is effectively free falling all the time! So how do they work?anyone? dont tell me it's flash memory cause a careful inspection reveals that it's a white, hard drive based classic ipod
my guess is that the fall detection mechanism is based on some accelerometer. hence, no matter how great their speed is, as long as their acceleration stays under the mechanism treshold.
The "free fall" mechanism is a accelerometer... It´s mesures the aceleration... when free falling in earth thats 9.8m/s2... The ISS has constant speed and not acelerating in its reference frame. All thow on earth's reference frame it has a radial/centripital aceleration wich makes it describe a circular motion... Since the ipod is at rest on board it should play beautifly =P
Awesome, I'm sure that many hundred of years from now, what we felt watching this video, the Earth through that window, will be something common for all humans with the development of space travel
Maybe he was filming on a Sunday, when the place is dead :)) I think the next step by NASA should be building a space hotel, similar to ISS, with decent rates, let`s say an average salary per night. That`s including transportation and space visa of course...
Awesome video. Someone should model the interior of the ISS in a game engine or an interactive flash movie or something so we can move around and get an even better real feel for the layout!
Wow. Is the space station just so big or is there really no one there? I didn't see any other astronaut. How creapy and at the same time awesome must that be, to be at the space station all by yourself.
Thanks for the video! Astronauts are never compared to policemen, firemen or soldiers, but the reality is they put their lives on the line each day to give something back to this country. They may not necessarily go to battle to protect us, but they go to battle against a great force, the Universe, to bring us information and give us options for the future.
@legacycx they still get to see the world from space and the risks are not as bad as they used to be..i would take the risk to see the heavens and earth from space...
Garrett is the coolest new astronaut I know of. He was just on the Colbert Report last night in person this time. I wish he would do more media stuff since he really makes it all pretty cool. He has my dream job!
It is great to see others enjoyed this as much as we did. Dr. Reisman does such an incredible job of filming/narration. As some of you may know, filming yourself can be difficult and unnerving. FYI: He did a live PAO with the Colbert Report from the ISS. If you breath air, it is a must see. The 9 minute interview is very funny, and they both do an excellent job of promoting NASA. The link will be placed in the video info.

They seem to be very particular about keeping the Russian and American items seperate. Is there a logical reason for this?

The metric system is not used much in American Technology. I would think they need to keep them separate because one size doesn't fit all.
