  • Adapter with "flex cable" is better. Then you don't have to worry about the weight.

  • ok im a bigfuckin noob when it comes to this but i have a macbook pro 13 inch and i realized you can plug it in and record ya i ot that far but how to i make it play back when im playing so i can hear it when im playing please please help!!!!!!

  • You rock very helpfull

  • why is the sound crappy? is garageband just cheap, or could it be my cable, etc.?

  • I've got a VOX AC30 portable amp thing. If I plug the male chord into that and then to my mac will that work?

  • thank you so much for your videos. this has helped me a lot. I just bought a mac and i've been pc my whole life definitely takes getting used to. i do have a question though for you: I would imagine connecting it this way wouldn't get you the best quality as opposed to running it through an interface correct?

  • @djtavi77 NO! That plug on your 13" Mac is "double duty, input/output" you have to go into your main prefs and switch it to "Input"

  • is there a name brand manufacturer for this cable? im having trouble finding it.

  • @mcgrathea Hosa makes one, so does Mogami. The Mogami is better

  • awthum yes it was very helpful thank you

  • just want to say thanks for doing these videos. they really help.

  • Can I please marry you?

Me being a lesbian defeats the object but thankyou so much!

  • @05Rachel Hilarious...

  • @05Rachel -Rachel no need to get married...I've always wanted to make a lesbian sCREAM....r u game Mac

  • can i do it with an irig cable?

  • Yes he did it was 1/4 to 1/8 cord the adapter was 1/4 and 1/4 to 1/8 inch adapter, the guitar cable is 1/4 and 1/4 at both ends the 1/8 inch adapter is what hooks up to the 1/4 and then in the com which is what was a problem because of the flimsy nature of the weight of the 1/4 inch basically buy a 1/4 to 1/8 inch cord seperate from a regular guitar cable!

  • i have the mac book and it doesn't have the audio in just the audio out what can i do

  • wait, you just said you didn't like the 1/4 to 1/8 adapters, but then didn't say what to use instead?

  • I have a macbook Pro and it doesn't have a second input jack, only a jack for headphones.. Is there a way for me to use the headphone jack or what??

  • @dresnera42 Same here. I think the new macbook pro 13" will only have 1 input. Go ahead and use that.

  • This guy drags this out soooooo long. By the end I uninstalled.

  • Good enough for an amateur like me for the time being. Every store I go into and ask, they want to sell me a $100 - $350 digital USB gizmo because "you'll get static or hum with just a mono to USB cable". I haven't even found anybody that suggested just using the audio input!

  • Thanks lewin, great tip! I was confused when I only saw 1 audio jack. Thanks to tazzbot for mentioning new MacBooks have a dual purpose jack. Now that I am getting sound recorded I guess I need to get USB speakers so I can better hear what I am recording. Thanks!

  • can use an irig and a regular guitar cable?

  • @musicsebastian888 I suppose you can cause me and my friend used and irig to use Garage Band on his phone

  • THANK YOU :DDDDD it worked i suck with macs so thanks a lot (:

  • THANK YOU!!!

  • For all you newbs with macbookpros, the headphone jack is a dual purpose jack. go into system preferences, sound, click input tab. there is a dropdown that says use audio port for "Sound Input" or "Sound Output". Chang it to sound input.

  • @thetazzbot thanks you condescending cunt. I hope virginity is going great for you!

  • me too my macbook only has the headphones image, can i plug my cable into that slot?

  • my macbook pro only has the jack with the headphones image...can you plug the cable into that?

  • @bignick2139 Brilliant. Plug an output into another output. X^D

  • Thanks a ton!

  • Thank God you posted this tutorial.. Finally able to record some guitar tracks on my MAC!! Thanks!!

  • Comment removed

  • 19 ppl use microsoft

  • what do you do for a mac air? there's only the headphone jack input..... :)

  • @GaragebandandBeyond The new Macbooks don't come with the mic input jacks. Could you suggest some cheap and effective USB audio interfaces to connect a guitar to a Macbook to use Garageband?

  • i don't see any red button @ 5:48 in my garageband! why is that??

  • Thanks :) That worked!

  • @GaragebandandBeyond Would this work with a microphone that has a 1/4 inch jack?

  • i know your talking about macs, and i know a ton of people have asked this but if i used that cable to run my guitar into my amp then into my computer would i be able to record that way? Or do i need an interface?

  • would you do the same thing to record video?

  • @GuitarGuy366 Absolutely not! Most cameras have either a USB port or a removable storage device that you can connect to your computer through something like a card reader.

  • My macbook pro 13 inch garageband doesnt have that button "all the way to the left", i think its the one with the red dot. How do i enable it, PLEASE HELP!!!

  • @Mtron1000 Go up to the "Track" pull down menu. Select "enable multitrack recording" and the red button will re appear.

  • @SunshineSupermanPA thnx! got it, btw, my macbook has only one input hole as u may know as its a 13inch one, if i wanna play with my headphones in, how do i go about it, Cheers!

  • I got my guitar to play through my Mac because of this video. Even my "GarageBand - The Missing Manual" couldn't help but YOU did:-) Happy musician, Raul - Kraken-Rohl

  • @ slench101, yes i have the same problem, i just bought a 13 inch macbook pro an it only has a headphone input, what do we do?

  • newer macbook pros have no microphone port (at least the 13 inch doesn't)

    what do I do?

  • hey i just bought a new macbook pro and on the side of mine it only has the headphone jack. i mean this is brand new so did they change it or something? can you help

  • I haven't got the jack next to the headphone one, I'm on a macbookpro i don't know i don't know where to plug in?

  • Can i use a jack to usb lead with garageband?

  • Thank You Very Much.. It works amazingly....

  • Hey ! i have a macbook pro and it doesnt have the input hole next to the headphones hole??? wat do i do??? pls help ! !!!!

  • Man you Rock! Thank you for the quick and to the point how to do it.

  • Man you Rock! Thank you for the quick and to the point how to do it.

  • i plugged in with the adapter but it doesn't show anything in the 'system preference'.. :( it only show internal microphone no other option! is it the fault of adapter or i don't have any clue??? could you help me please ??

  • how good will the quality be if i just use the mono 1/4 to mono 1/8 cable? whats something not too expensive that will get good quality?

  • i've done everything you said here. change levels and drivers and all the shit. still nothing. not picking up my guitar at all. any ideas?

  • @Dynamomaximo Watch my video called "Troubleshooting Garageband, Why don't you hear anything?"

  • @Dynamomaximo YES the same thing happened to me. What you have to do is switch the input type to stereo instead of mono. That solved my problem.

  • thnx ! u help a lot

  • Thanks, but can you use your bass on the same amp too? I also use songwriting to make my songs, and I wanted to add my own bass, guitar, drums, and vocals. How would I make these all mix up well?

  • Thanks! I am getting a good deal of delay with your simple set up. I tried help but the option to optimize for minimum delay is not there. Is that because I am not using a MIDI whatever that is? I almost bought the fact track 2 is there something cheaper out there that you think would help? I am just learning and want to use the built in lessons and perhaps one day record.

  • You mentioned the button on the top left that turns red yet I dont see that. I am running iLife 11 like you but only have 3 options. Mute, solo or unsolo and monitoring on or off. What are you clicking on that turns red? Thanks for the video, I do have it working and saved a few bucks for not not getting the Fast Track 2.

  • @Tloke34698 Watch my "How to multitrack in Garageband 11" video if you want the little red button. But if you are only recording 1 track at a time, you don't need it anymore. The track will automatically be armed.

  • thanks a lot

  • cant i run my 1/4 from my guitar to my amp then a 3.5mm from the amp aux to the computer ?

  • @rrgert4 I would not recommend it. The input on the mac is sensitive and can easily be over worked.

  • @rrgert4 You can do that if your amp has a jack for direct output, otherwise it would probably too noisy for the mac to handle.

  • when you connect your guitar to garageband, can it play just guitar sounds, or can it play the sounds of other instruments that can be used in the software?

  • @jammin0591 Yes if you plug your guitar into your mac you can basically only get guitar sounds. To control the software sounds you would need a MIDI guitar. I have used the You Rock Guitar YRG-1000 MIDI Controller Electric Guitar, and it's not bad. Not great, but certainly does the job well enough.

  • @Garagebandand is it compatible wihth a roland gr20? im not sure if youknow what that is?

  • Thank you! You made it all so easy ;-)

  • mine is not working i plug it in and it won't work so yeh? i have a 2010 macbook pro 13 inch

  • Genius! Cheers mate!

  • Hey, I've probably quadruple checked all the system settings and volumes of everything and even used 3 different adapters, but even playing max volume on the guitar, through a v-amp on max volume, into the computer on max volume with headphones, I can only barely hear it and it doesn't even register on the peak levels in garage band. Do i have faulty cables, or adapter or what?

  • @cupid1gx try watching my video called "Troubleshooting Garageband, why don't you hear anything?" If that doesn't help let me know.

  • @cupid1gx whoops, sorry I wrote that from another Youtube account.... it was me!

  • Will this work with any guitar?

I'm wondering, because I'm planning on buying an electric guitar very soon, and this is one of the most important features for me.

Also, my friend told me that I have to buy a sound card to use my guitar with the computer. Is that false?

  • @matanxmou It will work for any electric guitar. If you have a Mac you can do it like this but buying an interface does sound better. Basically. less hiss and better signal strength from the guitar. But this method does work well and I used it for a long time.

  • @GaragebandandBeyond Thanks for the quick reply! Is there any cheep device that you're recommending? or maybe the cheep ones don't worth the money?

  • @matanxmou I like the PreSonus AudioBox USB

  • @GaragebandandBeyond Thanks! You're videos are very useful and interesting, and I had fun pushing the subscribe button ;)

  • Thanks for your help

  • hello,

I have a 13 inch macbook pro aluminum unibody. I have looked all over the computer but only see an 1/8 input for headphones. What do i do if i don't have one for input?

  • U The Mann Bro !!!!!!!

  • @dintubeDK Something like an iRig will work for you.

  • can u record with a jack to usb adapter if your mac doesnt have a input plug

  • I have an adapter that goes from normal jack to mini-jack. Will it work if i plug this into my guitar and then use a mini-jack cable to the mac?

  • How do I remove the delay sound?

  • there's a slight delay between the time I play a note and I hear it.

Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?

    Thanks.

  • hey I have a microphone extension cable 1/4 inch male XLR connectors and it fits into my guitar and then into my computer, but it's not working when I play around and stuff :( what should I do?

  • a mac or laptop from apple needs a interfase to conect the guitar or apple's computers include somethingn like a interfase? Thanks man!!

  • Is that a fender deluxe usa stratocaster in the backround??

  • i got a Macbook, and when i go to system preferences with my guitar hooked into the mac, i dont get two options, its only the "internal microphone" that shows up... so my problem is i dont get any sound and i have done everything else right... what do I do? :(

  • Windows 7 should have came with something like Garageband ! Peace Ye`all !!

  • this works for bass to right

  • I connected my guitar this easy route but theres a very small delay in the sound (output) when i play my guitar. How do I get fix this?

  • i have an electric/acoustic guitar if i want it to sound electric and not acoustic should i select electric guitar? and if i want it to sound acoustic select acoustic? srry for the dumb question but i didn'y get my able yet

  • can you use the iRig as the "adapter"?

  • can you use the iRig as the "adapter"?

  • K buddy.. got it... may be I ll have to buy a MONO one.. By the way thanks..

  • Does only mono works.. one which i have has two black stripes on it....

  • @kuldip2604 2 black stripes = stereo... and actually I'm not sure! try it and find out!

  • @kuldip2604 It works!

  • Thanks very much this helped a lot!

  • i dont have a red record button to click!! once i have done the process

  • @SmithComedyAustin search for my video called " How to Multi Track in Garageband 11, iLife 11 " it will show you how to get the little red button back!

  • hey

what do i do if i dont have a line-in jack

i have th new macbook pro

and there is only a headphones jack

could u tell me what to do since i dont have the right inline jack thing?

  • ugh I hate how the new macbook pros don't have a line-in jack. I really need one! thanks a ton apple.

  • I have combined headphone/line in jack on my macbook pro, do you think i could use the guitar irig on this and plug my guitar or electric piano into this and be fine?

  • @GaragebandBeyond I did everything you said but I dont have the same bar next to the little guitar... the red button... any reasons why? did I miss something??

  • I dont have the input one!!! is there an adapter of some kind?

  • Hey I great video...just have a problem tho...I'm gettin the sound great but I noticed that the sound keeps fluctuating on and off during play...like for exaple i can't hammer on for too long without it going off or even tap....strumming works ok but even taht occasionally goes....can u help please?

  • yo i cant hear my guitar on my mac and i have the cord connected but my mac just doesnt pick up my guitar help me out?!?!

  • @Dlo6666 Do a search on YouTube for "Garageband Help Troubleshooting. Why don't you hear anything?"

    It should help

  • @GaragebandandBeyond It still wont work like i did everything in the vid but like no sound from my guitar on the mac

  • @Dlo6666 turn up the sound on the guitar it worked for me

  • omg u're a real lifesaver!

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you. You just ended hours of frustration. This video should win an Emmy. Thanks again !

  • Hey, I have a cable that is one side USB and one side input jack. I successfully got it to work in garageband, although I have been having trouble with annoying feedback. Even after playing with the setting the mac will stop and a pop up window will come up saying that there is too much feedback and it cannot record. I've played with it but for the life of me can't figure it out. Feeling very annoyed and a bit stupid. Can you give me some tips?? I just want to jam. Thanks!

  • @Tosswallyproductions There are a few things you can do, so I'll just write a list of things to try. 1 just turn off the "Feedback Protection" if you don't actually hear any feedback happening then you can just turn it off. 2 try headphones 3. Just turn it down a little 4. try turning the "gain" down on whatever Amp simulator your using. 5. Try switching pickups one of those should solve your problem.

  • @GaragebandandBeyond Thanks bud, I'll give it a try. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks

for your time, great vids by the way.

  • THANK YOU! IT WAS VERY HELPFUL!!!! GREAT VID.

  • well my macbook air has no audio in port. it just has a headphone port & a built in microphone

  • i also have a macboook air like some have posted below. As it comes on my computer, I would really like to use garageband, but I don't think the computer can handle me going straight in to the computer with a cable and my guitar. I want very clean sound and not a lot of humming. Should i buy an audio interface like you have...Or should I just save up my money and buy a Macbook pro..or and iMac instead..or something that can handle the guitar better. Please respond!! thanks!

  • @DWH1T93 An interface is the way to go! Your Mac can handle it without any problems. Look into the M-Audio FastTrack. It's a great first interface. Good luck!

  • @GaragebandandBeyond Thanks!! I'll give it a try!

  • Can you use the plug to connect an acoustic guitar?

  • @h8vok yes

  • Comment removed

  • When I connect my guitar to garageband with that cable, can I make the guitar sound like what i want it to sound?:)

  • Hi,

Is it possible to record guitar, keyboard, bass guitar etc all at once from a mixer or an amplifier into MacBook Pro? May be by using an USB interface? Please advice.

  • This connection work on ipad?

  • ok im ordering the m-audio fast track pro with my two instruments i have a eletric accustic guitar and a Portable Digital Keyboard what wire can i use to plug them in to my fast track pro?? need feed back asap please =)

  • Hey Lewin are you still using the same setup to get your guitar into the computer?Going to GC this afternoon to buy some gear. Why the M-Audio with PreSonus? Thanks man, Love the videos. they've helped.

  • Alright mate great video, just wondering would this also work for a microphone is plugged into my amp then into the mac?

  • @WenchesandMead It would ONLY work if your amp has a "direct out". If it does not, DO NOT PLUG IT IN TO YOUR MAC! You will blow out the input on your Mac by sending it an amplified signal.

  • @GaragebandandBeyond ah ok well I have a line 6 spider 4 and it does have an another plug on it that says 'phones/record out', but would it actually improve the quality by putting through an amp?

  • Thanks a lot mate!! very nice vid!! But, look I got a problem, I'm new with mac and I've just bought a laptop a Mac Book pro, but it just have the headphones plug!, so where do I connect the guitar cable?? Hope you can help me!!

    Thanks a lot mate!

  • Kinda off-topic: awesome wallpaper with a lady in red.

  • much appreciated man, finally got it to work..

  • Thanks man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey, when I try to record guitar on GarageBand I get feedback. I put a usb microphone in front of my amp and when I plug headphones in they don't work and I continue to get feedback.

  • macontosh????

  • hello,

I have a 13 inch macbook pro aluminum unibody. I have looked all over the computer but only see an 1/8 input for headphones. What do i do if i don't have one for input?

  • @roadtoadie3 Click on the apple logo, click system preferences, click sound and where it says (use audio port for:) select audio input. now it will receive sound instead of outputting it.

  • @roadtoadie3 what year did you get your macbook pro?

  • @bttb008 2010

  • Hi roadtoadie3

I bought my macbook pro in 2010.

  • @roadtoadie3 in the system preferences go to sound and change the audio jack use from output to input. so what you do is change the headphone jack from being able to output music to an external audio device to being able to take music in from mic's, guitar's, so on and so on. hope this helps!

  • @roadtoadie3 Hello , u can configure the that port to act as an input via the System Preference , just look around :)

  • @roadtoadie3 the single one is universal ie it works for inputs and outs :)

  • @roadtoadie3 lol thanks everyone for telling me how to do that, i have so far had 11 people tell me how to change it and i would like to inform everyone that i don't need futher instructions from anyone. kthxbye

  • @roadtoadie3 Can you tell me pls? I rly want to play guitar on my MacBook...

  • thx alot man !!!!!!!!!!!

  • what about new macbooks there is only one in jack

  • Hey mate, Is it possible to go through a distortion pedal straight into the mac or is that bad for the mac in some way?

    Cheers!

  • Is it possible to go through a distortion pedal straight into the mac or is that bad for the mac in some way?

    Cheers!

  • does this work with any interface, say a Tascam US144?

  • Hey Lewin

When i plug my guitar into my mac i get alot of feedback what can i do to stop it?

    Thanks

  • @browno1rhcp Turn down the volume or put on headphones!

  • @GaragebandandBeyond

I have the same problem but my macbook pro only has a headphone jack. I can't even hear my guitar when I plug it into my computer. Should I use a usb adapter?

  • hey man, I just got the new version of the macbook white 13in, and it has the built in microphone, so they took the input next to the headphone out, what do I do? =(

  • Hey Lewin!

I have a really dumb question.. when hooking up the guitar to garageband... does it pick up any vocals(when singing)?

    I'm a totaly newb here. i'm sorry! :( thanks!

  • hey, i have the new macbook pro and i have the cable but the only mono input is for headphones. where do i plug it in?

  • can you record thru garage band?
