the best way to watch the first one was to put on the dvd in a different room, with the tv turned off and not go in the room for two hours, and spray air freshener in there afterwards. Or, get a lobotomy first.
a lame sequel to the first original that was lame as well. these guys finally had the chance to showcase samoan culture like Once Were Warriors was shown, but they belly-up and show eveything that is a stero-typical version of us, and worse off, the story didn't even reflect life as Samoans, even in a comedy way, it fell short of anything to offer but dry Kiwi humour characterized by samoan actors. sad, Siones Wedding to me was more a movie version of Shortland Street. But with bad acting
Oh, no, not another sensual Samoan movie. I thought the first movie was too sensual, and I think this one is going to build on that sensuality. Think about the culture; surely we wouldn't do those things in front of the elders, so why do it in this movie. That said, I don't understand all the hype about the first movie. I'm not hating, I'm just being conscious of the culture. 'Ae faitalia lava 'outou i le mea 'ua tou fia matamata i ai.
@MrOnetwo87 I'm not talking about it not being "culturally loaded." I'm talking about the sensual stuff. Since it's a Samoan movie, for sure a great deal of Samoans are going to watch it - that includes Samoans back in the islands. Whether it be NZ Samoan identity or not, they are still Samoans; thus, they represent Samoa. I'm Samoan American, but thankfully I spent a great deal of my life in both Samoas, too. Everything I do in America reflects on the culture; blood is thicker than water.
@theephraimite Of course they are still Samoan but that doesn't change the fact that a large majority of them have never lived or been to the islands so their experiences and perceptions of the culture are different. In regards to the "sensual stuff", this isn't a film that is intended to educate about Samoan culture in the same "the Orator" did. Like "Boy", which had a largely Maori cast, "Sione 2" is simply a universal story with Samoan characters.
@MrOnetwo87 You are still missing the point. I'm not talking about educating people about Samoan culture. I'm saying that the elders and other Samoans with decency and morals are going to see the sensual stuff. Surely, we wouldn't do the sensual stuff portrayed in the first movie in front of our elders, so why must they see there own people do it in films?
@MrOnetwo87 How could it be irrelevant? If they are Samoans, then everything pertaining to Samoa is relevant. I'm sorry, but that is just the way Samoans are. The main characters are Samoans as well as their actors, so it doesn't matter if it's a universal film or not. You are representing Samoa, so many Samoan folks are going to be watching. But if there is anything irrelevant, it is Machete and Mexicans. I'm not talking about portrayal of cultures and how accurate it is.
@theephra That is your opinion although you clearly do not know enough about films in general. Using "Machete" as an example is relevant because the same thing is being replicated with Sione 2: the film is not intending to abide by cultural norms or represent the people in general. It's purely entertainment for the masses. There are films where that works (e.g. the orator) but this is not one of them and people including elders should respect that. No one is forcing them to see it.
how am I missing the point? you just told these guys to think about the culture. What I am saying is that the culture isn't as much of a focal point in the film, so what our elders think of the "sensual stuff" is really quite irrelevant. If they wish to see it then they must understand the intention and target audience of the film. It is a story of mainstream appeal and not necessarily indicative of Samoans in general. Do you think "Machete" was meant to be an accurate portrayal of Mexicans?
Didn't think much of the first one to be honest. Same formula that is present in a lot of Hollywood rom-coms & that Bel-Air prison scene ripoff made me cringe!! Hopefully, we'll see some originality in the sequel! Unpredictable plot twists, anything, cos I love seeing fobs on the big screen!!
OMG LOVE IT!!! i'm so excited for this! I have Sione's wedding on DVD I didtn know what it was but then loved it!! it's called somoan wedding on my dvd though. I hope I can see this one when it comes out! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
robbie Magasiva is finnnnnnnne! wow! talk bout hottness! all samoans share alot of humors due 2 our culture..but theres samoans worldwide alot of us share the same upbringing wen it deals w/our culture etc..but there is alot of difference as far as upbringings wen ur in the USA OR NEW zEALAND alot of us share diff humors too but stil funny tho! i wan to do a film w/5 samoan brathas growin up in cali stil share the samoan way but ones that grew up in US
THE WHOLE POINT PEOPLE TEND TO FORGET IS "ITS A MOVIE" EVEN DISNEY MOVIE HAVE ISSUES, ITS ALL ABOUT WATCHING THE MOVIE THEN RECITING LINES FROM SCENES AN SO ON, PEOPLE GET CARRIED AWAY ON THEIR OPINION, ITS JUST LIKE WHEN ONCE WERE WARRIORS CAME OUT
WHY IS EVERYBODY MAKING A BIG DEAL ABOUT THA NEW MOVIE YES LIVE ON UR CULTURE BUT WE STILL NEED TO OUTREACH TO NEW THINGS EVERY CULTURE MAKES A LAUGHTER OUT OF THERE CULTURE FOR THE FUNNY AND HISTORICAL LAUGHING SAMOA MAKES US LAUGH SO Y R U GUYS MAKING A BIG ISSUE OUT OF THIS. *REMEMBER THAT*
@KCHIEFTAN Agree that Sione's Wedding is about the mixture of Samoan & Kiwi culture, like you said before if it represents Samoans or Samoan culture then its all good. I overlooked something, which is the more movies about Samoans the more exposer to polynesian culture the better even if its about stereotypes, fiction or culture.
@poly408 Poly's have made a name for themselves considering if you want to play the rule of percentages, Samoa population under 200,000 & the Nz population 4,500,000 thats not including other poly nations (Tonga, Cook Islands, ect). We have already built an industry its about building a bigger one but my argument has always been we may be misrepresented in which I would like to see more movies like The Orator. Think I'll just let it at we both don't kno shit & we both have different opinions.
@RaykwonDaKilluminati The Orator was funded by the New Zealand Film Commission, so its almost as much a New Zealand film as it is a Samoan film. But I'm personally not concerned with such details; as long as they promote Samoans and Samoan culture, then its all good.
@KCHIEFTAN The Orator was Co funded by New Zealand FC & the Samoan Government. If a film depicts a certain theme or culture does that mean the funders (producers, film studios) are representatives of the story. One Example, Slum Dog Millionaire film with the story, locations, actors, set in India but was funded by British film companies, so who claims it. The Orator is a Samoan story but it is as much a poly film as it is Samoan or NZ film. Like you said if it represents then its all good.
@RaykwonDaKilluminati true but without the NZFC, the film would be non existant and so would any opportunity to establish a solid film industry in Samoa.A film industry is defined by its self-sufficiency and not necessarily the content of the films.Sure Slumdog was set in India, but it is considered a British film; not an Indian film. The Samoan film industry is in a somewhat stagnant position at the moment, but im sure the orator will be a sign of good things to come.
@poly408 Haha! I liked how you tried to flip the script from (your quote) "ITS ABOUT MONEY" to you know it would sell, to its all about popularity. I thought you knew the demographic business of the film industry because Poly's have been doing it & last time I checked Maori's are Poly's Too. From Once were warriors, Tattooist, No 2, Wale Rider, Va Tapuia, Boy, Siones wedding (to an extent), to Television shows & other forms of entertainment.
@raykwondakilluminati idk why ur gettin mad for. Obviously u dnt understand wat I said u dense ass I was tlkn bout that movies of tradition would sell bt not be popular and that they need to keep makin movies like the orator to really break into popular media.idk wat the hell ur goin off on so to make it easier for ur prideful ass polys need to make a reputation in the film industry before doing something big hence why idependent movies like the orator are good and will build us one. So dnt be
@poly408 Have you heard of sarcasm plus you brought up Hollywood and this is not a Hollywood film (hence pollywood, it was a joke). Hollywood films are based around money but the inspiration of films comes from the artform of storytelling not money. And if you don't think films about FAA SAMOA won't sell or not worth telling then Fuck you. You don't represent and you don't know shit about Samoan Culture. THE ORATOR selected for Venice and Sundance 2011 film festivals plus coming out in cinemas.
@ssrabits WHO said anything about Samoan gangsta movies, if you read my earlier post I'm talking about films about Samoan Culture. Haha if you want to post an argument make sure you get your facts straight, because Sione's Wedding story and cast is made up Samoans and it is co written by Oscar Kightley who is Samoan. If you want to talk about mainstream check out THE ORATOR (ole tulefale) written, directed, cast is Samoans in the Samoan language in cinemas in NZ, Samoa and Australia in October.
@raykwondakilluminati woah woah first off it's Hollywood jus bc u got poly actors dnt make it pollywood if u show me a place in the world actual called pollywood then u can call it that. Second I know alot of samoan history prob same or maybe even more and obviously shows u dnt kno shit bout the movie or business world so let me explain. I like that u think a movie about Polynesia should be made or movie about Polynesian legends and myths bt ITS ABOUT MONEY its not really a key demographic tha
@poly408 Haha Hollywood, I think you mean Pollywood. Its obvious you don't know much about Samoan stories, legends, mythology, culture, spirituality, Faa Samoa and what it has to offer. Its not about money and Malietoa and the history of Samoa story is worth telling more then these types of movies. Broken Promise (Tautoga Gausia) is better than this movie and its budget as, but like you said Sione's Wedding is a comedy but I just don't find it funny I guess, their NZ born Samoans anyways, lol.
I'm Samoan but is it jus me or does Sione's Wedding make Samoans look like faggots.
I know we have a sense of humour but these types of movies make us look like a bunch of wankers.
I know I'm a bit harsh and I'm not a film maker but why don't they make a movie based on Samoan Culture, in Samoan dialog, or about Malietoa first King of Samoa, or about Toa Samoan warriors. Not a bunch of laughing so'so homo's.
@RaykwonDaKilluminati i understand what your saying bt this is comedy and the idea of ur malietoa films prob would never sell...sorry bout it bt thats hollywood.
@RaykwonDaKilluminati bit harsh dont you think?. Id rather watch this than watch some Samoan wanabe Black American ganster type of movie youre more likely to get for those living outside Samoa. The director and Writer is Palangi so it would obviously reflect the way they see comedy. The movies youre after are already out there but just not in mainstream. You just have to look in the right places to find it.
@RaykwonDaKilluminati I also see what you mean but think this film is an accurate representation of young Samoans in New Zealand, a majority of whom speak in english and are very much assimilated into the culture. Films which are very culturally driven, particularly when spoken in a language other then English, generally appeal to a very specific and smaller audience. And I think this film is trying to target the mainstream, by amalgamating elements of Samoan and Kiwi culture.
@KCHIEFTAN Agree on the film being about Samoans in NZ but I don't know about being an accurate representation, more of a stereotypical view. The Orator trailer, states the movie has universal morals & values (love, honour, etc) which appeals to all people & I don't see this film as a failure if its not a hit or mainstream. Its already a success its Samoans doing positive shit. Its important & educational especially 2 the young Samoans living in other countries who don't know about their culture.
@RaykwonDaKilluminati Sione 2 does draw on stereotypes but purely as a source of comedy. When I said the film was an "accurate representation", I was referring to the fact that most Samoans in NZ speak English.I'm sure or at least hope that the Orator will do well internationally.Just because it isn't mainstream doesn't mean it won't be a good film or received well by critics, in fact some of the best films in the world are independant films.
AAAWWWWWWWWWWW SNAP!!!!!PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me that it's gonna be released here in the U.S. on January 19 too????....Loved the first movie & this one looks like it's gonna be off the hook!!!!
Cant wait..i hope it comes to London...pleeeease ask them if you have connections to bring it here..remember the Pacific islanders (all be it only a few of us living across the ditch lol) Alofa!!
