I think you may be on to something. I used to study with Jehovah's Witness. Never actually became one officially, but did study. I left for various reason I won't get into.

Found a message board with ex JWs. Most of them are *gasp* atheists. As you said, I think it's a psychological thing of being let down by some previous belief.

that sadness in our voices comes from being depressed about living in a world where its socially acceptable for fully grown adults to believe that their is an invisible man in the sky thats in charge of everything and if you dont believe in the invisible man your an inferior person. I'm sorry, but that theory is a bit silly to say the least. If its any consolation, i have never mentioned santa when debating with/talking to theists (why would i?) and only became an atheist after extensively researching things such as evolution, radiometric dating and so on.

Another thing is that you are abusing the terms of scientific proof and theory. Your 'proof' is opinion unsupported by any facts (apart from your emails, which do not reflect the majority of atheist views).

Theory is opinion for it is not %100 proved. You can try the dictionary for that if you want but I do agree the Santa thing sounds a bit silly, yet if you think about it some people would really be affected by that. Being told that the magical guy who gives you toys and makes you happy isn't real sounds alot similar to saying the God who created and loves you isn't real either, of course I don't believe this affects all atheists just some.

Calling all theories 'opinions' is a bit detrimental. Just as the word 'mark' has dozens of meanings in different contexts, the word theory means different things in scientific circles. A scientific theory (i.e. theory of evolution) is backed up by experimental data and considered the best explanation for a phenomenon.

Shockofgod's theory is conjecture based off of personal experience, backed up with little, if any, evidence.

Atheism is not a religion. It simply means you do not believe in any Gods. It is also not tied to Evolution or the big bang theory or any of that good stuff, you can believe in Santa and still be an atheist. I became an atheist way after I stopped believing in Santa and when I stopped believing in santa it had no effect on me. I'm sure there are maybe one or two people who are atheists because of "santa syndrome", that still wouldn't make them wrong.

We teach children that Santa knows all things, lives far off, has promised to return and give good gifts. These things are related to Christ. One day children learn that Santa is a myth and we lied to them. Then we try to teach them about Christ and wonder why they are skeptical.

I used to be an atheist. I became an atheist because I went through a time of major depression and anger. I stopped believing in anything. I decided I wanted to end my life. When I tried to end my life, basically God yelled at me. That was enough proof for me to Gods existence. I can't prove God is real to anyone else but I seen enough proof myself.

Everyone is free to believe whatever they wish. However, Atheism is conflicting because it is a belief system that believes in no religion. This would make Atheism a religion.. hence atheism conflicts itself. You cannot both believe in no religions yet believe in a religion. Anyway, you must seek proof for yourself. If that is what you want. Don't bother looking for proof that you can show others. Seek proof that proves to you.

Interesting theory. I actually have a much more sinister theory about Satan--I mean, Santa. I think these stories exist so that kids who heard them from their Christian parents will stop trusting them and they think, "Well if Santa, the Easter bunny, and the tooth fairy aren't real, then what about Jesus?"

People get caught up too much in the materialistic version of St. Nick, vs the spirit or "lesson" of St. Nick. My family's gotten to the point where we really don't spend alot of money on Christmas, we're just glad to all be together under the same roof (we live all about the state).
