  • the best baroque composer of all time!!!

  • Perfecto!!!

  • Interesting to know that this, along with everything else Bach wrote, wasn't performed more than once in his lifetime, and didn't become popular until over a hundred years later. Oh, the life of a baroque composer.

  • @bbridges711 He was essentially rediscovered prominently by Felix Mendelssohn , and the Bach revival, was essentially brought into existence...

  • @Apologist4Christ973 And there were almost no dates on any of the works, which is why I answered incorrectly when my professor asked "How were the BWV numbers decided?" and I responded with "Chronology?" Derp grad student.

  • come on now! here me know! are ya hearin me now? much respect goin out to me main man sebastian bach, hear them tunes on the ones and twos. bangin respect goint out to me main man. bla bla bla, shabba!

  • just beautiful...

  • 27th Sunday

  • i was in a bad mood when i clicked on this video...i feel loads better...man this stuff is so...relaxing

  • A couple posters assert this version is by Empire Brass. It is very similar to the sample I found on iTunes. I feel is next to criminal not to cite version info.

  • Who are the musicians?

  • @MaabudZ i keep forgetting these things weren't recorded back in the 18th century...

  • Beautiful, calm, reflective, Heaven (however you see it) is a bit like this

  • God save the Queen!!!

  • @stormtrooper1296 Sex Pistols?

  • @BuddhaStarr nah, i just felt like typing some random phrase.......

  • fantastic music, just beautiful

  • It's eerie, the hair on the back of my neck stood up, I could of sworn I heard voices singing at 3:19!

Excellent performance, this really is quite a lovely piece.

  • aaah Bach, the music i grew up with and laid the foundation for the shape of things to come.

  • C'mon, shut up and enjoy this lovely piece

  • i dislike most of religions. i love bach's music. problem? then keep it to yourself, cause i don't give a damn. i just came here to listen to a beautiful masterpiece and you should shut the hell up and do the same. if you wanna bash religion or fight for it, go to some forum. this is youtube. more importantly, this is BACH. peace ;)

  • Its beautiful.... So calm and yet so intense. when I close my eyes and listen to this, it takes me someplace truly extraordinary. Its like I'm flying, dancing and resting at the same time. Truly Marvelous.

  • Bach = Heaven!

  • any serious musiclover must know Bach and relate to him genetically in Love for Music

  • I find it ironic that a tune typically titled "Sleepers Awake" actually helps me get to sleep more easily.

  • in some ways BACH'S music sounds more contemporary TO ME than mozart. beethoven etc

not better but more modern /// by no means an expert on classical music but i know JSB proceded the 2 mentioned

  • I don't think Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven sound contemporary. Contemporary would be anything rock and roll, hip hop, or the like. There are some modern 'classical' pieces...however I consider them to be old fashioned. I like this old music much better than anything 'contemporary' however :)

  • We live in a time where music is only limited by the performers skill and the composers insight. The muse never left, you just cannot profit so heavily from it anymore. And to real musicians none of that should matter. If you have seen no local live music this week, you are doing yourself a disservice as a music lover. Listen and love all music, you can find it everywhere.

  • @earwasel2 Beethoven was Rock and Roll in his time

  • nice arangement. WHY EVEN BOTHER!

  • Sounds like the entrance though the gates of heaven and marveling view of heaven in all it's splendor

  • Exams here i come c:

  • live* lol

  • intelligence is to be here rite now.l ive in the moment they say.

  • Bach is the greatest composer and musical master of Western Music! He is so close to God with his soaring imagination and depth of understanding. I personally don't know if I believe in God, but Bach brings me to God anyhow. His melodies are so beautiful! His orchestrations so flawless and multifaceted; his fugues so intense and brilliant; his music so challenging to complacency in every way, so forward looking; his mind searching the cosmos for the perfect means to express its grandeur.

  • @Sapsuckerdude To hell with your GAWD.

  • 28 people will never wake up...

  • music is all tied to a higher purpose, its the great infuensore of any generation

  • sinplemente sensacional, lástimaque los músicos clásicos actuales no tienen la inspiración divina de los clásicos.

  • Our Special time, our special time, our special LOVE!

    I hurt for you BABy!

    FBILWYF!

  • my god what 80's tv program or advert did they use this for again?!?!

  • @danielsonn77 lloyds bank advert

  • Amari irakurririk: "Aspaldion ahaide hunen entzutez hartzen nu luak". Izanez ere, amatto dilettante hutsa genuen, musika klasikoa ez ezik, artea ere bazuen maite. Guri aunitz erakatsi zaukun eta geroztik nik badut kuttun-kuttun XIX. mendea, dela musikaz, dela, historiaz, dela arteaz, dela argazkigintzaz, dela literaturaz... Nik alabattoari paratzen ohi dekot, tarteka, eta Guridi, eta Ravel, Aranburu, Zuriñe, Bernaola, Sarasate, Arriaga eta bertze.

  • I dont think they had microphone technology back then so did people just copy the notes and record them?

  • @jaremarshall14 Everything was copied manually, probably using a goose feather pen.

  • And there will be those who will never sleep! But there is no real music composed for them unless some one knows some thing that I do not.

  • @raynor9x9 you're right. religious or not, you have to acknowledge the importance of the church in both preserving and advancing the arts.

  • @graufuchs88 right. most music was funded by the church/state and gave a struggling musician a source of income.

  • @TheGreatchaz519 not only music, patronage for (high) arts in general, social welfare and healthcare and of course the educational system. all funded by the church, before there even was a centralized state to take care of all this. And now the Pastoral Power (Foucault) is still among us at large just behind a different veil.

  • What can one do on a day when nothing special is happening?

Easy! One can listen to Bach and make that day special!

  • >come to a Bach video

    >see people being freaked out by religious discussions

    What the heavens?

  • Have this 1 on my mp3, it's bitchin!

  • @mysticnightromancer1 since when did Bach fans say "oh that's bitchin" I mean come on at least try to be civilized

  • That intro made me think i'd opened a jazz video.

  • This song makes me feel a little sad, like melancholic.

  • @ClassicalMusicOnly it would be a great service to music, if you could delete unsavoury comments. Let there only be music. Thank you for uploading the beautiful pieces

  • It is absurd to attempt segregating a religious musical work from its religious historical context. It is even more absurd to assail the discussion of religion by people who associate this religious musical work with religion.

  • Using the snowflake button seems very fitting with this music.

  • The 24 dislikes must have been by Justin F#$@# Bieber who created 24 separate accounts for disliking this video.. :P

  • @balajichari85 not funny

  • @balajichari85 get a life

  • @tsfreh well you obviously do have one.. got no better job to do in life than browsing thru the comments of a youtube video.. so get a job first..

  • @balajichari85 try harder fag

  • @StupidManRetard and you obviously like Justin F$@##$ beiber.. well what does that say about you??

  • Ummm... it's natural to mention religion when discussing Bach because most of his music was written with religious purpose.

Now, that aside ... Bach has some most beautiful, solemn music. Love it!

  • @audiostratus I perceive it as spiritual not really what we see as religious. The enlightened ones know the truth.

  • @MrLivePositive8 "Spiritual"? Are you testing me, Satan?

  • @demonliberal Haha I am not "Satan" and no that was no intended test.

  • @MrLivePositive8 Well whether you precieve it as spiritual or more specific such as glorifying the God of the Bible doesn't really matter.

What matters is that Bach, who believed that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God wrote much of his music with that in mind. You may dislike it, and you may not be a christian, but that doesn't change what Bach believed.

  • @audiostratus Yep, even his "secular" music had something to do with glorifying God. That was the reason he wrote music. Its funny how people who hate religion, especially Bible Christianity, but will listen to Bach. That would be like me hating metal heads, but listening to metal! Does not make sense. On the top corner of his music he would write, "to the glory of God". Bach only lived 200 years or so after Luther ripped Germany out of the clutches of the Vatican!

  • @Joshuajlawn Bach was a musical genius. That is fact, regardless of whether or not he believed in God. All can enjoy his music.

  • @Joshuajlawn It's the whole "new atheist" movement where you're seeing these brainless bigots being snooty and what not. I just had a chat with a female atheist who was acting high and mighty on deviantart by telling her that this so-called movement is pale in comparison with the atheists and secular movements in history -- people back then didn't rely on bigotry as now, but their own intelligence and rational thought to inspire the masses.

  • @CosmicGrounds People have always relied on bigotry, I was raised in a Catholic family but don't believe in God. Not all atheists are like that. Also please look at how corrupt and violent the church used to be back in medieval Europe. I am not trying to act all high and mighty, history shows us that there is little intelligence in religion.

  • @ThathertonGaston Is it really religion or is it those who either fail to think for self or those who hide their wicked propaganda, ignorance, hatred, and personality disorder behind religion as a cover up? It's easier to reason that certain people must be exterminated, because a deity said so, as opposed to openly exterminate others because they want to.

Oh, and what exactly is intelligence? What's the universal definition of intelligence?

  • @ThathertonGaston There are people who make both good and bad decisions regardless of belief. Stalin and Mao were atheists who murdered millions, while Zackie Achmat, founder of (TAC) against HIV and AIDS, and Bill Gates spends his money immunizing African children, both men are atheists.

  • @Joshuajlawn What is "Bible" Christianity?

  • @audiostratus

All the music was written for religious purposes because they were written for the church.

  • @sel1011001 That makes sense, the church has always been big into religion.

  • @kh23797 You had me laughing so hard marijuana was coming out of my nose.

  • So what if it is religious..it amazing & fantastic..its absolute absurdity to look at it from such a view.

  • Bach is the perfect composer for a warm cristhmas night :)

  • 23 dislikes with Bach? BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!

  • @jasonmoore1900 I think it might be just the interpretation... a bit bland, if I may say.

  • delicious

  • We're playing this in my band <3 flute melody though (no, i dont mean orchestra. i mean band.)

  • Bach had 20 kids....he coulda started a Bach Orchestra....what an orchestra it could have been.

  • I have no idea why, but this song really reminds me of Black Adder

  • My high school orchestra has to play this at our Christmas concert in 6 days. It's not a very easy song. :/

  • Yes, Bach, I understand how one can touch the human mind so profoundly. Yes Bach can. My feeling is that this will be for many generations to come as well same touch. just so human.

  • @thomasey2 In my opinion Bachs music seems almost beyond human. As one man said "Listening to Beethoven makes you feel like Beethoven. Listening to Mozart makes you feel human. Listening to Bach makes you feel like the universe."

  • @Themightyblunghole I don't think Bach wrote a note of music that wasn't in praise of God. His inspiration was always a spiritual one. That might be one reason for it's lofty quality.

  • @terrybeaton you'd better check all the BW and you will find that what you want us to believe is not correct.

  • @wj4710 It turns out you are correct in the matter. I must have been caught in the myth of Bach's religous piety.

  • Half asleep I cook bacon and eggs to this.

  • 23 people like Justin Beiber.

  • @TheUnbannableTroll so we can call 'em Morons

  • guys is it wierd that sometimes classical music makes me masturbate. like i can just masturbate listening to classical music, not even thinking about any girls. just wanted to ask that question.

  • @malows1234 Of course not, that's perfectly normal.

  • This is the kind of music that makes me want to wake up every morning.

Make coffee, listen to Bach... CARPE DIEM.

  • @Arsenate22 and VITA BREVIS, ARS LONGA.

  • such an adorable piece (':

  • We're playing this in orchestra. Absolutely beautiful tune.

  • >come into Bach video

    >see people talking about religion

    What the hell?

  • @TerminusEst13 WTF! I've had the exact same impression.

  • @TerminusEst13 Shouldn't be that surprising - Bach was the most devout of all classical masters. Mozart and Schubert were church-going Catholics but hardly the devout type and Beethoven believed in a vague "infinite deity." Bach, however, read his Bible scrupulously, was a lifelong Church musician and signed all his cantatas "Soli Deo Gloria," "to God alone be the glory." Beyond Bach's personal beliefs, his music seems to evoke some sense of divine beauty in most who hear it.

  • @TerminusEst13 He was quite religious.

  • @TerminusEst13 because Bach was a Christian. but I agree, heres not the place to be talking about religion.

  • @gamerfreak5665 Bach was born in the 1600, of course he was a Christian...

  • @gamerfreak5665 why not? his religion was an important influence on his music... The main topic cannot be about God existence but about religion beliefs in his time!

  • @Sanotaru92 im just saying that a music video is not the right place to be talking about religion. I have no problem talking about religion in a video about religion.

  • @gamerfreak5665

The song is telling those sleeping to awake for the Lord is coming.

Trim your wick for the Lord is returning.

it is based on Gospel of Matthew 25:1-13 and the parable of the virgins.

Of course it's the right place to discuss religion, this song is about religion, the one true religion that of YHWH and HIS Son Yeshua.

  • @abcmole i never knew the history behind this song. cool! and yes, I am a Christian, therefore I believe what you said here.

  • @gamerfreak5665 Very good, my friend. :)

    Have a Happy Christmas.

  • @Sanotaru92 If you're not thinking or talking about Christ when listening to Bach then you don't understand his music. Bach was a Lutheran Kantor in Leipzig, Germany. As Kantor he was responsible for writing liturgical music for the churches of Leipzig. He was also in charge of Christian education in the town, which meant that he was theologically trained. Bach's music is interlaced heavily with Christian theology and themes. That's why he's often called the 5th Evangelist.

  • Comment removed

  • @TerminusEst13 Bach was a Lutheran Kantor!! Every song he composed was solely devoted to his religious beliefs and his God!! If you understood the true nature behind Bach's compositions you wouldn't be saying that

  • @lelouchmagnet12 who the fukk' comes here for religion?? i came for his music, moreover he made this music not "God"...

listen to it,like it, and stop arguing about non sense assosiation

  • @soleafar22 Yes, most of his music was religious, but I agree with you.

  • @TerminusEst13 This is not 4chan, bro.

  • @TerminusEst13 I guess it's because Bach takes people somewhere up in the stratosphere where if there is a God, he must reside. Hard to believe something like this was created by a mere mortal.

  • @TerminusEst13 Well it is religious music.

  • @TerminusEst13 Well there's nothing strange about that. After all, most, if not all of Bach's music was based on religion and his devotion to God.

  • @TerminusEst13 Almost all of his music was religious. That could have sparked the debate.

  • @amazingwave Because the church was the highest paying patron at the time if you weren't writing music for a nobleman.

  • @TerminusEst13 it's everywhere, man.

  • @TerminusEst13 >sleepers wake is a Christian Hymn

    >see many atheist complain about religious comments

What the hell? uh oh... hell is a religious topic!

  • The first time I heard this was many years ago in a game called friday the 13th on the commodore 64/128

  • WOLFGANG OR DIE

  • Loveeee this song..

  • @kurniasr >song

  • @kurniasr It's not a song.

  • Ive played this on my cello before

  • 23 people need to be punched in the face.

  • @shanelololol The absurdity of what you just suggested is astonishing. You are saying that before the bible people were savages? This must mean that the people of ancient Greece and Rome never created the standard for politics and law 2000 years before your great book.

  • @November10th1775USMC some books from the bible were written before ancient greece and rome, thath doesn´t mean that i´m agree with the savage subjet but you should read a little bit more before writte...sorry about my english

  • @Danmelodicdeath Are you retarded, I'm seriously asking? The christian fairy tail goes like this.. Jesus was born in 0AD, Ancient Rome was formed in like 4000BC, Ancient Greece in the same time period. Now ask your self this, how could it be that the Christian Bible was written before Jesus was even born. Its been proven to be written 100s of years after his death.. You truly are a fucking idiot.

  • @November10th1775USMC O_O sorry dude i didn´t know that you don´t know the old testament like exodus leviticus numbers, etc...the christian bible have this books before the new testamente, and those were written way before jesus was born...ja...maybe you don´t have a complete bible...again sorry about my english

  • @Danmelodicdeath Again, saying that you are complete and utterly wrong is an understatement. The old testement also known as the torah, was the jewish book of worship, still written thousands of years after the formation of both Ancient empires I mentioned before.

  • @November10th1775USMC sorry dude maybe you are right...wikipedia save you ja good source

  • @Danmelodicdeath Its called a book..

  • @November10th1775USMC Actually, the writing of the Torah precedes both Greek and Roman civilizations. I guess if you use a late date it's right around the time of the rise of Greek culture. But the (initial) Old Testament precedes the founding of Rome, much less anything that can be called an "empire", by hundreds of years. The New Testament, of course, was composed/assembled in the first few centuries CE...

  • @osiris0413 Haha, I don't know where you get your facts. But know this, i'm far to intelligent to feed into your bullshit. Judaism says Moses brought down the 10 commandments 3300 years ago, but by combining the independent sources of 4 Jewish scholars and 1 Christian preist, scientists put the date of the torahs composition at 450 BC. Now in 753 Rome was founded as a kingdom, much before that a city state. Now even if your theory were true, what were Romans and Greeks doing with the Torah?

  • @November10th1775USMC Dude, relax, no need for such rudeness, people understand you perfectly well without it = )

  • @bibeljo Nothing proves a point better than a quick "Fuck you".

  • 240p is not HQ lol

  • This one sounds like an glamourseries opening..

  • This is the perfect homework music(:

  • bach is the god of music

  • 23 people fell asleep and never woke up to click the Like button.

  • @dohyou Yeah but God created Bach's brain.

  • @Shanelololol yeah, but didn't we created God?

  • @miepdetruus no, we sure didnt.
