This is very lovely to watch aside from being very informative in itself. It's nice to sometime just stop and cherish the moment watching nature unfolds. Thanks for making that possible for busy people like me..
@aFanLikeU I always enjoyed National Geographic-type shows for just those reasons... and it's nice to able to contribute such material in my own little ways =) Glad you enjoyed it too - thanks a bunch for the view and nice comment!
Thank you for revisiting my childhood with new vision. There were many of these when I was growing up flitting among the lupine and poppies. They frequented by grandparents place; half the yard was garden, the other overgrown with grapes, trees, & a compost heap! Grandpa warned me someday they'd be rare to see, as he watched a great Condor fell swoop from a tree - I was so lucky to love these things! Lastly I saw a mission blue near Pacifica. I miss the bay, & the good golden days...Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ
This is impressive. I have done 2 or three time lapses myself, but I would love get a butterfly one. Mine are with jumping spiders. One is a spider webbing her egg sac and the other is a time lapse of baby spiders inside the egg sac.
It always amazes me to see how such a large set of wings can come from such a small package! XD I'm glad you enjoyed the show - thanks so much for the visit and kind words! :-)
This video is so amazing. Thank you for sharing these with those of us who will most likely never see this in real life. Your music and your filming are beautiful. I could watch these videos of yours for hours on end and never tire of them! :)
Larger butterflies do need to hang mostly inverted to let gravity help with the expansion process, but smaller species are happy with more horizontal positions, or even completely upright. This species preferred to cling to a vertical (or nearly vertical) surface, which still helps the process. =)
Cool, isn't it? :-) The little scales on the wings are irridescent, which means they "make" their colors by refracting light (like raindrops and sunlight make a rainbow) rather than from color pigment like paint and ink. The color that the scales make depends on the angle that the light hits the scale, as well as the structure of the scale itself. As the wings expand, the scales change angle and position. Morpho butterflies from South America are prime examples of butterfly irridescence :-)
Thanks for the great comment! The soundtrack is "Newton's Prizm", from my "TimeShift" CD. It's a free download on my website (Timeshift CD page on the technician website at JCMDI d0t c0m). Cheers! :-)
Such a beautiful work, Thank you for this consciousness, butterflies are made to live a fantastic life, short, but fantastic...when everybody is engaged to let 'em live their real life mind thought by God...This is their case, Thank God...Peace...
The video and images were recorded on all sorts of different equipment over the course of several months... The music was made with various synthesizers, MIDI sound modules, samplers etc., and mixed down on a Korg D1600 ministudio. The final video was edited and rendered with Windows Movie Maker. :-)
I'm glad you liked this one! I had wanted to raise this species for many years. It was one of the most effort-intensive of my many projects... Wow that wing expansion is just incredible. I would have never thought it would happen in 10 minutes. That is amazing. Do you know how they are doing this? It looks like they are pumping blood into them and its pushing them out into the full shape of the wing. It is amazing how condensed they are to begin with.
It is a truly amazing process - they do actually "pump" a semi-clear fluid into the wings' vein structure to expand them to full size. The fact that they can fit those wings into that tiny little pupal case along with the rest of their body is the real impressive part! Thanks for visiting! :-)
Thanks so much for the great comment! :-) I actually raised these butterflies from eggs, did all the filming, editing and wrote the music myself as well. It was a 6-month long project and a lot of work, but well worth it! :-) I included a lot of detail in the video description, and there is a full documentary on this project on my website for this species. Absolutely amazing compilation. You want to see metamorphosis in action, I couldn't suggest a better video. It's absolutely crazy how the larva go from caterpillar to butterfly.
Insect life cycles really are amazing things to study - especially when observed close up with modern tools. Many of the things I film at realtime speed don't look particularly interesting until they're sped-up, and a whole new perspective is revealed. Thanks so much for all the attention and kind words :-)
I found it particularly interesting how they emerge bright green and change to a more blue color as the irridescent scales change position and refract the light at different angles. Very cool little bugs

Wow, breathtaking beautiful! Thanks jc for the huge effort to display this incredible video. And now I know what to watch out for in my garden, sometimes those pesky bugs one might disdain for eating floral leaves might just be a becoming butterfly lol. 5 Stars ....:)

Wow, breathtaking beautiful! Thanks jc for the huge effort to display this incredible video. And now I know what to watch out for in my garden, sometimes those pesky bugs one might disdain for eating floral leaves might just be a becoming butterfly lol. 5 Stars ....:)
