This pedal sounds good and in a live situation it might pass as the genuine article. It's not nearly as chaotic or "big sounding" (in that analog way) as the original (I have owned an RE-150, RE-201 and RE-501). But, I don't think that anyone would rightly expect all that from something this much cheaper.
Another interesting Space Echo emulation is in the old Roland SP-808 Sampler. Again, not the same as the original, but interesting.
Space is a very expansive place. The original Space Echo is like the Apollo. Very cool for its time, but there's a lot of space left to explore. I think the RE-20 is a worthy descendant.
I've got the re201 and the re20 and the re20 is definately a fair DIGITAL version of the original. A lot of aspects have been considered in it's construction that mimicks the original tape sound.
Sounds like something you'd hear from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop back in the early 60's. I love it! Wish they made these ten years ago when I blew $90 on a piece of shit Danelectro "Reel Echo" (which NEVER sounded like a real tape delay)
The GS-201 - GSi - Soundware for musicians plug in emulation eats this for lunch. UAD's and Rolands RE-201 pedal don't even get 50% close to the colour unlike the GS-201 at 99% for $19. Shame on you Roland & UAD.

Many people claim you couldnt hear the diifference. Come on, when overdriven, it sounds nasty, not saturated-driven. Its not bad, but believe me, compared to a pearl echo orbit or a RE210 (i own both), it just falls off.
Who would ever claim that? of course it doesnt sound the same. try gigging with your 210 though. This thing is pretty damn close without the reliability issues.
Nick McCabe and Eddie Hazel my two guitar heroes use the original and i had my heart set on owning one until i found out id have to sell my left nut to get it (not that i can see why anyone would desire my left nut) but anyhoo is the RE 20 anywhere near as good as the original?
I think it sounds great!!!I reckon if you put this in a room away from the so called experts they would be fooled into thinking its a space echo especially in a full mix.Who cares anyway? It sounds good enough to me and is cheap as chips.I persoanlly love analogue kit and own loads of it but I can no longer be bothered with all this 'eh eh its not real analogue so its shit' brigade.
Its better than straight up digital delay, but this doesnt sound like a real Roland Space Echo. The way it degrades as it decays is different and there isnt enough inconsistency in the way it reacts to volume. Ive owned 3.
@simonsound1 If Roldand did make the orignal again...it would be cost prohibitive....the price would have to be so high that very few people could afford it.
@animalmother4 The problem with the clip is that this dip-wad...like a lot of people try to use the think for all them real spacy sounds instead of using it for things like room ambiance and echo reverb...for which the unit was initially intended. When I as playing on the road I used two RE-301 Chorus Echo units with my stereo sound system...one L and one R to get a really nice enhansed depth for the vocals. Great sound
I think thats going a bit far. Having used a real Space Echo (as I'm sure you have) I agree that there are some differences but it certainly suits me for portability and price. I wish I could afford to be a gear snob but I can't!!
@simonsound1 come on man, you can afford a Voyager but not a real Space Echo? Based on this demo you'd probably be better of with a basic analog delay. Nice demo though and a worthwhile upload.
@simonsound1 I agree. I have the original and plan on getting the pedal.. why? for live use. and because the upkeep and calibration can be wearisome on the older units. No doubt they sound different in some respects especially when they are pushed but for the basics they are close enough.
Also to add to that anyone owning a tape echo like myself will tell you the maintenance costs are through the roof!! Yes they were great when there was no alternatives but these days, Id rather concentrate on music that maintenance.
Hey, have you sent any CV from the voyager to the pedal input of the Boss unit? That'd be an awesome feature if it accepts hot CV instead of just an exp pedal.
it does. As far as digital delays with multiple options go, I've tried both and i feel that the EH Memory Man with Hazarai has a better analog recreation and more options if you find a good setting.
I have the Memory Man also but it fails in its recreation of analog recreation as soon as you try and tweak the delay time setting - do this with the Re 20 and you get the nice smooth slurr as the delay increases or decreases. Try it with the Memory Man and you get glitches as the delay time changes. I still like it for other things and it is very versatile.
Like the old BossDD-3, it RESAMPLES, perpetually, rather than repeating one digital grab from a variable amount of time, like most PCM delay's do now.
Wait till you try 2 RE-20's in series!! ! amazing polytap rhythm rides!
hello. sounds good! would love to hear one side by side with the original tape versions...the original sounded/sounds really good when pushed, which I'd be interested in your comments how this one sounds when pushed...
what the hell are you talking about? in fact this dude is using this pedal CLEAN with NO distortion! hes strictly using the 'space echo' to its FULL potential... a whole new genre of music can be formed/evolved from this/these type of pedals...like i said before IMO i think these effects are the future in rock music since rock hasnt changed that much in the past 20 years...no music lasts forever unless someone modernizes/updates it...why do you think rap is getting so popular? rock isnt changing
nice shit i was thinking about getting this or the digitech whammy 4 XD i cant deside i mean i have a boss rv-3 revrb/delay but i dunno if i should get another delay or get a new sort of pedal what should i do :(
Thanks for the nice comments so far. I have changed the title Charlieonehorse! I posted the video because when I was looking into getting the RE-20 and wanting to hear it in action, all I could find were people playing guitar through it. I hope this video offers electronic composers a little glimpse of what it can sound like when fed analogue signal.
Yeah, me, too. I don't really care how guitar sounds through it, I am interested in it for keyboards as well. I have a Voyager, and honestly, I think this pedal sounds super good with it; total "Forbidden Planet" type of delay.

this is an echo delay, if you're looking for just straight delay then i suggest you get the giga delay or a dl4.

Yeah the tape thing pisses me off sometimes, especially getting a near perfect loop, without dropouts.

you are correct though...nothin like tape saturation. Digital doesnot compare to my ears. you definately can't push it the same as the 210

oh okay, got that one wrong, thanks for telling me now i know which pedal to get.
sanjaydass123 2 years ago
:) To be precise, he's using two of those. One going 1 octave down and the other set to go 1 octave up!
The PS-5 is a pitch shifter the echo (re 20) is an echo(delay). I have both, the RE-20 is an owesome pedal, if you have a chance, get one!
