Nah, spear I made, and the original purpose for the spear is for my DP threat build, not solo. There's a thread about threat tanking on the forums that goes into more detail about it.
If you can afford the hawk, then there shouldn't be any question which pet to get. If it's too much to afford then you will probably get good bonus from just upping your gear some more. I switched because I could afford to. No, soloing is not better exp than DPing unless you can score some full buffs.

60m is a drop in the bucket as far as what you'll need to keep current guear on your pets as well as yourself.
