Also if anyone hadn't noticed if u ever look at the actual piece....there are so many breath marks....the only reason why he put so many in is because his father was azmatic.....so just a fun fact to know!
@Rein6teins Tight embouchure is key :) And of course breath support of amazing quality. If you haven't found your third lung yet when playing its time to play until you have :P
What a great player....Being a former F horn player, I can really appreciate the time, effort and years of practice it takes to be that good!! Well done sir.
@rogerlucchayer His names Timothy Brown. Principal horn with London Philharmonic. Lip placement is due to his front teeth being crooked oddly enough. Lovely man, fantastic teacher.
If you don't forward this comment to 9,426 people then aliens from the galaxy of Hapsburgh-on- Klaxdonstein will nullify all music played in our planet Earth and turn it into Cheeze Whiz.
I lived in Japan few years ago and the NHK TV network had an hour of classical music from 6-7 AM. This is the NHK orchestra and it is as good as any other! Where do the Yamaha horns come from? They do know their stuff.
Graham Paige of the original Canadian Brass played a full live 30+ Min direct to disc recording without a single fluff. I heard Jacek Muzyk play a complete Bach cello suite arrangement live without a single fluff. It IS possible.
It looks like an old German single Bb, - the finger paddles are round, not tapered. I had an old Knopf single Bb just like that. Also there is indeed not enough tubing to be a double. The thumb valve is a stopping valve.I now have a 3 valve single Bb and a 5 valve single Bb Berg, and a Hoyer F/Bb double, so I know the differences, but I can't play this concerto with as few fluffs as Tim B.
:>) !!!
The orchestra horns at 5:07 are full doubles- they have much more tubing.
Its definetly Tim Brown. But he's not playing a Paxman or anything like those. He's actually playing a British-made "Cornford" Double horn. Its a strange one, in that it has 5 valve caps but if you could look behind the keys at the thumb valve mechanism you'll see a bar running from the thumb key to the first valve cap and another bar connecting to the last valve cap. Really strange but I have played his horn before. Spent 2 weeks studying with him. Its a lovely horn to play. Hope this helps!!!!
True you can buy a Bb single but if you look closely he has a thumb valve. You may say, "this is for a stopping valve", but then why is there tubing coming off the thumb valve? I think whats confusing everybody is that it is a Geyer wrap instead of the normal Kruspe wrap.
If you don't like the stopping valve then it could be a single with F extension? Like an alex 90 or something? It's not got enought ubing to be a double. Pause at 1.24 - one set of valve slides!
I'm sorry to spoil your fun but thats a double. I know this because all the D's he plays are on 1 and 2 and had this been a single you would be playing a C#, you need to play a D on 1st finger with a single.
last I knew there isn't such a thing as a Bb single horn, the singles are tuned in F and the doubles are F then Bb when you hit the thumb, then theres triple horns but I've never seen nor played on of those in person and know nill about them.
@regaldrifter Chill dude, it was just a simple comment. I wasn't being stereotypical, prejudice, or racist. You're just over analyzing. Otherwise, this is a beautiful performance and a great orchestra.
@littleyogi16 Isn't that funny? I found that I'm not a least bit interested in the fact you pointed out, especially when I close my eyes and simply listen. When it comes to the music, why would someone give a s**t if it's played by asians or by someone else? Music is for your mind and for your ears - not for you eyes.
He's a great player, but he doesn't seem to be taking many risks in this recording if you know what I mean. He seems to be playing it safely rather than emotionally
Okay now who is stereotyping? Just because someone is Asian doesn't mean they are better. I find it impossible to compare orchestras by the race of the musicians. Yes you see more Asian soloists but also look at the size of their population compared to that of Europe and N. America it's proprtionate if you will.
I am not stereotyping i have played in many orchestral and sympphonic groups with plenty of people from the Asian race, many of whom were my friends. They put dedication in their work, in my comment I meant to say that it just goes to show that they are dedicated to music. I do not compare orchestras by the race of their musicians, but by the sound they produce. I personally play french horn, and have enjoyed playing with groups such as this. I am sorry for "stereotyping" although i did not.
i dont think it's necessarily stereotyping to say asains put more dedication into their work, because its part of their culture. thats why asain countries tend to have a higher suicide rate than others because so much pressure is put upon them. not to be morbid, im just saying that it is a part of their culture to excell and be the best of the best in anything they do.
hmm thats funny, because in terms of population size New Zealand of all places i think is either 2nd or 3rd in relation to places like Japan haha and we're mostly white, you should check your stats methinks, but hey i know you're just making a point, but then i guess we wouldn't be able to really check the suicide rate of china and north korea since they're so secretive.
If you look in the audience, you'll see that EVERYONE but the soloist is Asian. Logically, then, one could assume that the performance is taking place in an Asian nation. (If I had to guess, I'd say Japan.) Perhaps the soloists is a guest performer and/or well known French Hornist. I wouldn't know by looking at him, but that's my LOGICAL guess.
Way to automatically dish out stereotypes, guitarpwner67.
You might also notice the text at the beginning is in some asian script (I won't guess which, I have no idea), which would also lead you to assume the above.
I don't see how the fact that he's performing in an Asian country affects the fact that he's the only white person there. I also fail to see how pointing out that he is white and that everybody else is Asian would constitute "stereotype dishing". It is a simple observation, and one that I find rather amusing. If you can explain how guitarpwner's comment dishes stereotypes with your LOGIC, then I will change my opinion of you other three commenters. Otherwise, I will keep viewing you as idiots.
It is such a symbol of how far horn playing has come to think that Richard Strauss wrote this for his father, Franz Strauss, the principal horn in Wagner's own opera and one of the finest horn players of the 19th century, who refused to play it because of its high level of difficulty. Now it seems like every high school student plays Strauss 1 before they graduate. I know I did.
basically, he controls the sound in all its forms, the balance bettwen the instruments, the loudness, the way certain instruments plays specific parts, etc.
the scores are just guides, he controls everything...
a good orchestra would be able to perform pieces without a conductor.. it just gets hard if the tempo or the loudness or something else changes .. he is much more important on the rehearsals
there he says how he wants the piece to be played ..
In the case of a piece without soloist, what you hear is the interpretation of the conductor - to the extent that orchestra obeys what he wants! A top orchestra is essentially like a musical instrument to the conductor. Without conductor, how would tempo, plus tempo changes, be coordinated? In a concerto like this one, is it not obvious to you that the conductor is more collaborating with the soloist to keep orchestra tight with the solo instrument.
some, it depends on where you are in the world and the equipment and playing styles of that area, California studio players use conns and lots of F horn, east coast NY Phil for example uses either Hoyer (or used to jerome Ashbys death ended his Hoyer playing career) or Schmitt Tripples (phil smith, Ralske,...) I play a modified 8D that Ashby used in the 80s when he was having his either first or second Hoyer in his hands....
To slow and boring and quite some missed notes. And why it sounds as if he would play the entire movement legato? No fierceness of Strauss. And where are second and third movement. I prefer Vlatkovič. I have his live audio of Richard Strauss concerto 1 but no video.
Im not critisizing just like that. He is a professional and he should be judged by higher standards. Maybe you prefer that we should praise everyone just because he can blow two notes? And annyway it is my opinion and maybe for you he is the best horn player ever and i respect that. Music is a personal thing.
This is no big deal solo..I played this my Senior year in high school 1958...I always will love this piece by strauss because it brings back so many memories...Very nice tone I might add....His technique is excellent some ruff edges...
I played this for my spring semester jury freshman year...I wasn't as BA on the Bs above the staff but I tried haha. Lovely performance. Love his tone!
Since when is a live performance ever perfect? Geez, even pro horns know this will never happen! Lovely sound, some of the arrangements or transcriptions have a rubato marking....2 of the ones I have seen have that marking...
i think this performance is awesome. I've been looking for good recordings of horn solo pieces so that I can choose a piece to play for our Senior Solo Concert this year, and I think that this one will definitely be it!
That's the thing with those 'ole professionals-you have break your back to play perfectly so that you can play like them and then when you finally get there you're allowed to break all the rules anyway.
After half a century of playing and teaching, I think his performance was better than you gave it credit for. It's OK to be an armchair quarterback musician but don't ever think that you'll ever be as good as him.
He did play the first run a little bad but everyone makes mistakes. It's a hard run too. As for slowing down, I'm sure it was intentional. It's just expression in the music.
jameshornplayer, you obviously havent played this piece before, or have no musical expression at all. and after you tell him that he slowed down, you have to bring back dennis brain and tell him the same thing, since he slowed down as well.

He gets slower on purpose as that is what the musical line requires to make sense.
