  • IM PLAYING THIS AT SOLO AND ENSEMBLE FOR MY JUNIOR YEAR! :DD

  • the conductor looks like a frog

  • I have this horn :)

  • i am playing this next year for my solo and im a SOPHOMORE! ;D

  • @EmIsAGirl94 but you are also amazing babe :) <3

  • @EmIsAGirl94 good for you?

  • @EmIsAGirl94 I might be playing this as a sophomore too!!! :D

  • Which orchestra is accompanying him?

  • Also if anyone hadn't noticed if u ever look at the actual piece....there are so many breath marks....the only reason why he put so many in is because his father was azmatic.....so just a fun fact to know!

  • he makes high notes sound so easy.

  • @Rein6teins Tight embouchure is key :) And of course breath support of amazing quality. If you haven't found your third lung yet when playing its time to play until you have :P

  • Amazing concerto by Strauss his first concerto it's was written for his father who was primary horn player. It was written when he was 19.

  • By Crom, conductor is japanized James Earl Jones!

  • *¬* i love strayss

  • Good horn player but the orchestra is not that great....

  • LOL what is the resolution of this video it's terrible. good song though

  • Great job!! I can't stop listening to this and I decided I will this piece for my solo for school, thx!!!!!!!

  • wow

    thats an alexander 90.

  • What a great player....Being a former F horn player, I can really appreciate the time, effort and years of practice it takes to be that good!! Well done sir.

    rja

  • I'm thinking about playing this solo on my tuba for my solo/ensemble contest coming up. I hope I can it this good!

  • horn's incredible

  • dios! yo apenas y toco xD

    que bonito

  • His lips placement, so canadian... Very flat at the bflat high, the horn may be the cause...

    Roger-Luc Chayer, hornist

  • @rogerlucchayer His names Timothy Brown. Principal horn with London Philharmonic. Lip placement is due to his front teeth being crooked oddly enough. Lovely man, fantastic teacher.

  • If you don't forward this comment to 9,426 people then aliens from the galaxy of Hapsburgh-on- Klaxdonstein will nullify all music played in our planet Earth and turn it into Cheeze Whiz.

  • we played in band for spring concert last year

  • Looks like an old Alex 12 Lorenzo Sansone to me...

  • Beautiful performance!

  • The conductor is the cutest thing I've ever seen.

  • That looks a lot like the French horn I play. :))

  • wow his lip placement is so weird

  • @daymo93 i think it works though lol!

  • this is uninspired.

  • PS

I lived in Japan few years ago and the NHK TV network had an hour of classical music from 6-7 AM. This is the NHK orchestra and it is as good as any other! Where do the Yamaha horns come from? They do know their stuff.

Graham Paige of the original Canadian Brass played a full live 30+ Min direct to disc recording without a single fluff. I heard Jacek Muzyk play a complete Bach cello suite arrangement live without a single fluff. It IS possible.

  • It looks like an old German single Bb, - the finger paddles are round, not tapered. I had an old Knopf single Bb just like that. Also there is indeed not enough tubing to be a double. The thumb valve is a stopping valve.I now have a 3 valve single Bb and a 5 valve single Bb Berg, and a Hoyer F/Bb double, so I know the differences, but I can't play this concerto with as few fluffs as Tim B.

    :>) !!!

The orchestra horns at 5:07 are full doubles- they have much more tubing.

    Cheers

  • 2:30. come on. he shouldn't mess up that run haha

  • Its definetly Tim Brown. But he's not playing a Paxman or anything like those. He's actually playing a British-made "Cornford" Double horn. Its a strange one, in that it has 5 valve caps but if you could look behind the keys at the thumb valve mechanism you'll see a bar running from the thumb key to the first valve cap and another bar connecting to the last valve cap. Really strange but I have played his horn before. Spent 2 weeks studying with him. Its a lovely horn to play. Hope this helps!!!!

  • is not it cocerto groso ..

  • True you can buy a Bb single but if you look closely he has a thumb valve. You may say, "this is for a stopping valve", but then why is there tubing coming off the thumb valve? I think whats confusing everybody is that it is a Geyer wrap instead of the normal Kruspe wrap.

  • If you don't like the stopping valve then it could be a single with F extension? Like an alex 90 or something? It's not got enought ubing to be a double. Pause at 1.24 - one set of valve slides!

  • I'm sorry to spoil your fun but thats a double. I know this because all the D's he plays are on 1 and 2 and had this been a single you would be playing a C#, you need to play a D on 1st finger with a single.

  • No you don't! You can buy Bb singles and F singles. That looks very much like a Bb single to me.

  • Comment removed

  • I wouldnt even dare to solo with a Bb single horn..... Its amazing how he can produce that amount of sound on a Bb single..

  • last I knew there isn't such a thing as a Bb single horn, the singles are tuned in F and the doubles are F then Bb when you hit the thumb, then theres triple horns but I've never seen nor played on of those in person and know nill about them.

  • There are Bb singles..

  • Shame the orchestral horns can't play those arpeggios!

  • im gonna play the french horn someday

  • Its Tim Brown. Fantastic soloist and orchestral player.

Recently retired principal horn of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, 20 odd years i think. Also Principal horn of the Orchestra of St Martin in the Fields.

  • is that a Bb single horn?

  • Yup. Bb 5valve.

  • He's the only one there that's not Asian.

  • I assume it's the NHK orchestra or similar. Is it important?

  • @littleyogi16 LMFAO

  • @littleyogi16 i dont understand why you got so many thumbs up? thats obvious.

its funny cause if you saw an american solo, it may be one asian person and no one would state anything of the sort. i love how stupid humans are.

  • @regaldrifter Chill dude, it was just a simple comment. I wasn't being stereotypical, prejudice, or racist. You're just over analyzing. Otherwise, this is a beautiful performance and a great orchestra.

  • @regaldrifter just shut up it was a jokr

  • @littleyogi16 OMG that is an awesome comment!! THUMBS

  • @littleyogi16 nutter spot the location

  • @littleyogi16 Isn't that funny? I found that I'm not a least bit interested in the fact you pointed out, especially when I close my eyes and simply listen. When it comes to the music, why would someone give a s**t if it's played by asians or by someone else? Music is for your mind and for your ears - not for you eyes.

  • check out my 7th grade quartet pleez!! its under "smiles2laffs"

  • i play frech horn too, check out my vid its under smiles2laffs and its our 7th grade quartet.

  • HOOOOOOOOO !! MAN i LOVE THE SOUND OF FRENCH HORN IT IS MY FAVORITE INSTRUMENT IN ORCHESTRA

  • @LONELYHEART7772 Do you play an instrument?

  • He's a great player, but he doesn't seem to be taking many risks in this recording if you know what I mean. He seems to be playing it safely rather than emotionally

  • wow what kind of horn is that?

i'm playing on just a plain yamaha silver fhorn.

  • holy shit.......... this is the best recording of this piece i've ever heard........

  • You've not heard the Brain recording then...or Baumann's.

  • is that radovan vlatkovic?

  • It's not

  • how does the french horn get so loud? i try to blast it in my band but I can never get as loud without losing my breath in like 3 seconds...

  • Huge amounts of air, think about filling your entire lungs and using your diaphragm to play

  • Yay for French Horns! I play double horn in school. Woot.

  • el poopy chetos

  • So muss ein Horn klingen! Bravo!

  • the most beautyfull sound i have ever heard in my life

  • that completely goes against the common stereotype

  • The soloist was amazing! Loved that!

The orchestra was... not too great... actually kinda bad.

    But good job horn soloist!

  • calm down buddy

  • hes the only one not asian lol

  • That's horrible man. Just goes to show how good they are

  • Okay now who is stereotyping? Just because someone is Asian doesn't mean they are better. I find it impossible to compare orchestras by the race of the musicians. Yes you see more Asian soloists but also look at the size of their population compared to that of Europe and N. America it's proprtionate if you will.

  • I am not stereotyping i have played in many orchestral and sympphonic groups with plenty of people from the Asian race, many of whom were my friends. They put dedication in their work, in my comment I meant to say that it just goes to show that they are dedicated to music. I do not compare orchestras by the race of their musicians, but by the sound they produce. I personally play french horn, and have enjoyed playing with groups such as this. I am sorry for "stereotyping" although i did not.

  • i dont think it's necessarily stereotyping to say asains put more dedication into their work, because its part of their culture. thats why asain countries tend to have a higher suicide rate than others because so much pressure is put upon them. not to be morbid, im just saying that it is a part of their culture to excell and be the best of the best in anything they do.

  • hmm thats funny, because in terms of population size New Zealand of all places i think is either 2nd or 3rd in relation to places like Japan haha and we're mostly white, you should check your stats methinks, but hey i know you're just making a point, but then i guess we wouldn't be able to really check the suicide rate of china and north korea since they're so secretive.

  • Most likely the concert is in asia and the horn player is a "guest"

  • If you look in the audience, you'll see that EVERYONE but the soloist is Asian. Logically, then, one could assume that the performance is taking place in an Asian nation. (If I had to guess, I'd say Japan.) Perhaps the soloists is a guest performer and/or well known French Hornist. I wouldn't know by looking at him, but that's my LOGICAL guess.

Way to automatically dish out stereotypes, guitarpwner67.

  • You might also notice the text at the beginning is in some asian script (I won't guess which, I have no idea), which would also lead you to assume the above.

  • I don't see how the fact that he's performing in an Asian country affects the fact that he's the only white person there. I also fail to see how pointing out that he is white and that everybody else is Asian would constitute "stereotype dishing". It is a simple observation, and one that I find rather amusing. If you can explain how guitarpwner's comment dishes stereotypes with your LOGIC, then I will change my opinion of you other three commenters. Otherwise, I will keep viewing you as idiots.

  • It is such a symbol of how far horn playing has come to think that Richard Strauss wrote this for his father, Franz Strauss, the principal horn in Wagner's own opera and one of the finest horn players of the 19th century, who refused to play it because of its high level of difficulty. Now it seems like every high school student plays Strauss 1 before they graduate. I know I did.

  • so many women in this orchestra wow....wow how many women bass players are in that section?

  • Thisisnotacircular,

Nowadays, no. But Dennis Brain (if you don't know who he is, look him up) played on a single B flat all the time.

  • What's the role of the conductor? Is he that important to the orchestra?

  • yes, he's THAT important!

basically, he controls the sound in all its forms, the balance bettwen the instruments, the loudness, the way certain instruments plays specific parts, etc.

the scores are just guides, he controls everything...

  • THANK YOU!

  • a good orchestra would be able to perform pieces without a conductor.. it just gets hard if the tempo or the loudness or something else changes .. he is much more important on the rehearsals

there he says how he wants the piece to be played ..

  • In the case of a piece without soloist, what you hear is the interpretation of the conductor - to the extent that orchestra obeys what he wants! A top orchestra is essentially like a musical instrument to the conductor. Without conductor, how would tempo, plus tempo changes, be coordinated? In a concerto like this one, is it not obvious to you that the conductor is more collaborating with the soloist to keep orchestra tight with the solo instrument.

  • Is it common for soloist to play Bb horn? He sounds fantastic though.

  • why not?.. you can hit high notes more preciseful ..

  • some, it depends on where you are in the world and the equipment and playing styles of that area, California studio players use conns and lots of F horn, east coast NY Phil for example uses either Hoyer (or used to jerome Ashbys death ended his Hoyer playing career) or Schmitt Tripples (phil smith, Ralske,...) I play a modified 8D that Ashby used in the 80s when he was having his either first or second Hoyer in his hands....

  • To slow and boring and quite some missed notes. And why it sounds as if he would play the entire movement legato? No fierceness of Strauss. And where are second and third movement. I prefer Vlatkovič. I have his live audio of Richard Strauss concerto 1 but no video.

  • And you dare not to post it?! Just put an imagine and the soundtrack in windows movie maker, and post that thing! It'd be a shame not to!

  • Where's the video of you playing it?

  • Im not critisizing just like that. He is a professional and he should be judged by higher standards. Maybe you prefer that we should praise everyone just because he can blow two notes? And annyway it is my opinion and maybe for you he is the best horn player ever and i respect that. Music is a personal thing.

  • This is no big deal solo..I played this my Senior year in high school 1958...I always will love this piece by strauss because it brings back so many memories...Very nice tone I might add....His technique is excellent some ruff edges...

  • why is everyone but the horn player asian?

  • It seems that was played by Chinese Orchestra and the horn player may have been invited as a guest solo player to this concert. doesn't it?

  • does the players being asian matter anyway?

  • i ply the french horn.

  • me too

  • It's so beautiful!

  • I played this for my spring semester jury freshman year...I wasn't as BA on the Bs above the staff but I tried haha. Lovely performance. Love his tone!

  • Criticize not inexperienced weasel.

  • Since when is a live performance ever perfect? Geez, even pro horns know this will never happen! Lovely sound, some of the arrangements or transcriptions have a rubato marking....2 of the ones I have seen have that marking...

  • That is, most definitely, not Greg Hustis.

  • FHorner16, 16, is that your IQ, Vienna horn WTF, why don't you go on line and look up Vienna horns then come back to here visit the big boys...

  • Is that Gregory Hustis of the DSO?

  • the timpani player ):

  • i think this performance is awesome. I've been looking for good recordings of horn solo pieces so that I can choose a piece to play for our Senior Solo Concert this year, and I think that this one will definitely be it!

  • complimenti al corno solista!

  • This is one of the best pieces to play for horn i think... at least it is one of my personal favorites =)

  • trumpets were too loud.. but still pretty good

  • Excellent performance. He's incredibly relaxed with his execution.

  • i think its pretty good now and a nice paxman 30 Bb horn

  • dude he's playing a Vienna horn...

  • although his performance wasn't 100% perfect, I found his interpretation most enjoyable out of all of the ones that i've heard.

  • I'd like to see YOU play that Mr. Negative!

  • LOL, my mom says stuff like that.

  • That's the thing with those 'ole professionals-you have break your back to play perfectly so that you can play like them and then when you finally get there you're allowed to break all the rules anyway.

  • After half a century of playing and teaching, I think his performance was better than you gave it credit for. It's OK to be an armchair quarterback musician but don't ever think that you'll ever be as good as him.

  • He did play the first run a little bad but everyone makes mistakes. It's a hard run too. As for slowing down, I'm sure it was intentional. It's just expression in the music.

  • jameshornplayer, you obviously havent played this piece before, or have no musical expression at all. and after you tell him that he slowed down, you have to bring back dennis brain and tell him the same thing, since he slowed down as well.

  • He gets slower on purpose as that is what the musical line requires to make sense.

  • great!

  • amazing!

  • Its a paxman 30 Bb horn

  • I could be wrong but it looks like a single Bb with a stopping valve. Anyone else have any idea? He sounds great!!!

  • Its a pax. 30

    G

  • i think its a coneford double..

  • Wow!...

Can you tell me if he is using a double french Horn or is it a single Bb?

  • thats single Bb

  • Tim Brown!Ex principal horn BBC Symphony

  • Can we get more information, please?

  • Former Principle of BBC Symphony Orchestra and currently Principle horn of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.
