Well, nldhstn, I'm not suggesting that Eisenhower was a saint. Vietnam was a disaster and wrongheaded from the start, for numerous reasons. During Eisenhower's time, our involvement in Vietnam was, mostly, in an advisorial capacity to the South Vietnamese.

Eisenhower's son, himself a retired four-star General, said that his father may have been a military man, but he was never 'militaristic', meaning, Pres. Eisenhower didn't think that the world began and ended with what the military did or did not do. It had its place in Amer. society, but shouldn't be at the center of it. I would say that Susan E. is correct. Eisenhower's policies, while informed by anti-communist sentiment, was not the all-out war machine that Bush et al. have constructed.

Gerald Ford was okay IMO, though a little ineffective. He opposed Roe v. Wade during his presidency, but I believe he ended up supporting it later in life, and was an advocate for gay rights post-presidency as well.
