Having sought for a perfecter performance of DNE to Favourite, looks like this be it: by 1987, the singer has become confident enough of public response &/or himself to but strongly sing it, diffident neither nor subdued below musicianshipping.
Go Hooky! Saw ya live a couple of months ago in my town.Go Moriss-keep smashing up that drum kit,you do it perfectly.Go Gill -you're gorgeous and a great musician who covers up the gaps. And Bernard is in there doing his bit.Awesome performance - this track from the " Movement" album should have been a single IMHO but it never happened.
The stratocaster changes everything. It sounds here like a rock song. I thought Barney used to play with a Gibson, SG or ES-330. Very different from the NYC 1981 version indeed.
I've love how Bernard adds a hammer on (correct term?) to his guitar intro. I don't know why, but I think it adds just the perfect addition to one of my favorite songs of all time!
Just as awesome as their 1981 performance in NY(wish I'd been old enough to be there)....a fucking classic track. And to hell with the knockers who say they slowed it down...that just isn't true.
Sounds like a lot of Cure stuff. I've always found the intro to this very similar to "In-Between Days," but not quite a copy. Though this tune was a much peppier sounding group than Joy Division, most of Movement I actually find darker and creepier than JD. The lack of punk guitar and emphasis on synthesizers and sequencers must be the difference because even songs like "Heart and Soul" or "Day of the Lords" don't sound as black or out-there as "Truth," "The Him" or "Doubts Even Here."
Yes he did. They were still trying to work out who would be the singer so they all had a go. None of them could play and sing at the same time so they had to arrange the songs accordingly, to magnificent effect!!
"Hook has also contributed backing vocals on numerous Joy Division songs, sings co-lead with Ian Curtis on Joy Division's "Interzone" from the 1979 LP Unknown Pleasures, and sings lead on two New Order songs ("Dreams Never End" and "Doubts Even Here" from the 1981 LP Movement)."
This may be the last performance of the song. I'm pretty sure the last time it was played was in 1987, and the band were unhappy with it, so they stopped playing it.
As in different view of the group with Hook as the lead singer. I thought the days of angsty little NO fans with their pedantic comments were over. Or did you come late to the cause ezelsgat ?
Obviously you dont know what you're talking about you sad angry little parvenu so I won't keep you from going down the park and looking at the children you lust after.
Precious time indeed , sitting on the pc with your wheelchairrusted with wee. I don't know why I bothered in the first place to rise to a comment that was intended to provoke not inform. Other readers , Internet trolls , it's something we should all avoid.
all this new order playing jd bashing sucks, ian curtis was great, but i mean the rest of the band was still behind the heartbeat of jd, and to go on after without ian and form/accomplish something like new order is amazing, until you fucking dregs of judgmental retards can do something like that then shut the fuck up, and i dont mind new order playing JD becos' thats how they tribute ian and i think its beauty full
That New Order could make a JDish album like Movement leads me to believe the guys had a fair hand in the song writing during Ian's days. BTW, to my knowledge, only Ceremony and In a Lonely Place were JD songs that NO recorded. I have never heard a recording of JD playing DNE.
actually, Ian just wrote the lyrics, Bernard mostly composed the songs, as well as the Steve and Hooky, but most Bernard. Ian would listen to the music and choose lyrics to match it.
yep Ceremony and I.A.L.P. are both JD songs. JD recorded a raw version of I.A.L.P. which in the heart and soul box set i think, the only two Ceremony recordings live and a demo, the vocals are were stuffed up on both which ruined the only recordings of Ceremony by JD
In that respect, Ian is seen as the embodiment of Joy Division even if he wasn't the dominant force some claim him to be. His death resulted in a confused time for the band but they pulled out of it and how! Movement isn't my least fave NO album (probably Republic or Waiting for the Sirens Call are below it) cause it has distinct charms. Its main problem is the songwriting takes a backseat to the sounds. Only this tune, "Chosen Time" and "Truth" move me. The rest are like gothic synth demos.
But Ian deserves credit in that without him, NO never could touch the commanding frontman role or the lyricist role, even though Bernie filled in capably. Much of Movement is unfocused though their singles were improving. Before the dance beats, "Ceremony" and "Procession" were still first rate cuts. But it wouldn't be until "Blue Monday" and onward that NO could create masterpieces like they had done in Ian's final months (LWTUA, Atmosphere in particular although most of Closer is genius too).
Hook is my hero. Love how the cure completely blagged this for inbetween days

I didn't realize that Hooky sang this song. But this is a typical NO concert: off-pitch singing. Love them anyhow!

i love so much the fact that this song that is the first one on the first new order album is not sang by the singer of the band...

Brilliant version of a grossly underated track. Love it when Hooky nails it at 2:02. Does anyone pound the drum kit like Steve Morris?

Actually, now that I think about, I may be thinking of another song...
LIL2511 3 years ago
Maybe your thinking of Leave Me Alone - they haven't played that since 1987, which is a great shame since it's one of New Order's best IMO.
adz1962 3 years ago
This may be the last performance of the song. I'm pretty sure the last time it was played was in 1987, and the band were unhappy with it, so they stopped playing it.
LIL2511 3 years ago
Not a good version of this song. They've slowed it down quite a bit here, particularly at the beginning...it sounds almost turgid.
The NYC performance in 1981 (also on YouTube) is better.
And I really like this song.

Well...
After Ian's death Hooky, Morris, and Bernard all tried singing. Bernard eventually got the role.
Curiously, both Hooky and Morris had done backing values on several Joy Division songs before - but Bernard had not.
Honestly, I don't know why Bernard got the call. His voice is thin and it lacks confidence. Occasionally he goes beyond being off-key...
I think Hooky, as he demonstrates here, can give a more compelling vocal performance.

Quite a different take with PH singing. it's one of NO's best songs from the early 80's but gets forgotten in the post Blue Monday haze.
