More weight Plus lower centre of gravity means more power. They could cause a lot more damage than botha at the breakdown, just they know it would result in a penalty

@ryko26 It's a valid argument he put forward. There's ton of players who enjoy inflicting pain of others. IF this wasn't the case 95% of the tackles would be textbook, but they're not, because players want to bash the opposition and physically dominate them.
You've being naive if you think your favourite teams don't have guys just like Bakkies in them, that was purrange point, and it's a point with merit. They might not be as physicallydominant as Bakkies, but it wouldn't be for lack of trying.

@chuffer76 Stop being a girl. Bakkie plays hard. Now he is not always legal, which I do not condone, but he is easily one of the best locks to play the game.. He tackles hard and with ball in hand he gets over the gain line.. Then at the brake down he clears the ruck..

@mkwapower He does all of those things you say, fair enough, but most other international locks do the same, but alot of the time he hits a formed ruck without binding and he uses his shoulder which is just plain cheating and he gets away with it far too much - a scrum half could do damage to a forward in the same way so it is no big deal, just wrong.

Another cool vid CombatBok. I actually really like Botha. He does hit guys with cheap shots sometimes but he usually just bashes them legally at rucks etc. Every team would love an enforcer like him.
It is no suprise that the last 2 World Cup winners (England and South Africa) won with 2 of the best enforcers to ever play the game in their second row: Martin Johnson and Bakkies Botha.

Bismarck's discipline isn't bad, I've seen him walk away from situations where I think he would have been perfectly in the right to flatten the offending player i.e. Pussy O'Driscoll in the 1st Lions test. Plus, Bismarck is still a young guy, he's still learning. Bakkies is pushing 30, you have to wonder if he's too old to get it out of his system.

He did it twice last year in the same test. The ref penalises him, or cards him and he throws a tantrum and totally loses control. He is a loose cannon, the worst in SA by far. Bakkies is far more calculated, though de Villiers has utterly destroyed Bok discipline.

@92skid Both are equally great. Take two of the best locks ever and put them into one combination, you have something that's never been seen before in rugby. Matfield is the brains, but Botha is the brawn. Showed Martin Johnson a thing or to in the 2003 WC.

You need an Enforcer, a guy that scares the crap out of the opposition and physically intimidates them. What you don't need is a guy who loses his mind. Bakkies is the former, but unfortunately he's also the latter. The problem is that other teams have realised that when you ruffle his feathers he gets angry and will probably get himself sent off. I'm not sure if he can learn to keep his cool after playing like he does for so long
