Love Ike. Ironic that the Republicans pushed for the two-term limit on the Presidency after FDR had been elected again and again. But then, Eisenhower, a Republican, could have easily won a third term. Interesting to imagine how history might have changed.
The U.S. Constitution provides zero authority to interfere in other nations unless our national defense is directly threatened. Using paramilitary activities destabilizes the entire world and as JFK said , " We should practice what we preach" and highlight our liberty by example not show of force. The CIA had been and was attempted to assassinate the leader of a foreign nation and brave Kennedy chose to deviate from the attempts by his Joint Chiefs by avoiding war and invasion.
I'm not a fan of Eisenhower's but you can see on his face that, whatever he thought of JFK personally or politically, he is deeply saddened for his country. Clearly, this was a Republican who did not believe in "Second Amendment Solutions."
He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword. This is what JFK and RFK got for killing Norma Jean and throwing her away like a piece of trash when they were done with her. JFK got exactly what he deserved when his brains were splattered for all the world to see. They actually thought they were immune from the consequences of their actions because they had been sheltered all their lives by daddy and all his money. I guess God showed them.
This comment is for the imbecile(RichardElden) who commented down below. First,Kennedy was handed the Bay of Pigs operation by members of the PRYOR party. He didn't like the idea and did not want to proceed as it was planned but had to follow through with it.He alone was blamed--not anyone else. You more than likely are a Communist--correct? Your remarks reek of stupidity and hatred for anything American. You're glad Kennedy was killed?? Why don't you go find a way to play with Castro's genitalia?
I don't trust Republicans worth a damn, but President Eisenhower seems to have been a solid, common sense man with a great sense of what America should be. I would vote for Eisenhower in a second.
I thought General Eisenhower's performance after the conclusion of Operation Overlord was rather poor. If Ike had shown better strategic foresight, he would have never let the USSR conquer Eastern Europe. A single decisive thrust through northern Europe by the Allies would have allowed the Americans and British to capture Berlin and the war in Europe would have ended in 1944. Ike's "broad front" strategy was very costly in terms of Allied casualties and prolonged the war in Europe.
He was a very decent and sincere man who rendered greater and more profound service to his country that you could ever dream of doing.
It sounds like what you actually want was there to have been a war with the Soviet Union, the possilbility of which was studied by the General Staff in '45 and considered madness.
Then again, chickenhawks and armchair generals usually don't care much for facts.
Just calm the fuck down. I never said Ike was not a decent or sincere man. I just thought his military strategy in Europe was flawed. Eisenhower was not a bad general or president, I just thought he could have done more with what he had. He had a tendency to vacillate, and he gave terrible military advice to President Johnson during the Vietnam War.
@TheManzfield7 I totally agree. You could bet your last dollar Ike wasn't buying the "lone, deluded gunman" story. Sadly, athough being a great military leader & patriot, Ike himself unwittingly helped nurture a rogue CIA that took out JFK by looking the other way as the CIA via intrigue and assassination became a de facto foreign policy arm of the USGov. Still, Ike fought constantly with & rebuffed his own warmonging JCStaff who amongst other brilliant ideas wanted to preemptively nuke China!
@newphx Yeah the courtesy title president is kept for life (I hate when I hear "former president" - I guess that's for the idiots who can't distinguish), but people who held the rank General of the Army (or Air Force, or Fleet Admiral) were kept on the active duty list even after they "retired." The only exception was Eisenhower who had to resign to become president, then after he left office he was reappointed. So technically being a general on active duty, calling him general was also correct.
Clearly heartfelt and sincere. But in fact the nation WAS "bewildered" despite what Ike suggested. I personally think he sensed or had a feeling that JFK was killed at the hands of the shadow govt. and the powerful.

Ironic that the Republicans pushed to limit the Presidency to two terms b/c of Roosevelt but then Eisenhower, a Republican, would have easily won a third term in 1960. Kennedy would not have been President but he would have been alive.
@RichardElden or @Nominay - whichever one of you said these vile comments you should be ashamed. Kennedy dying directly led to the vietnam war and so you're happy that he was killed so that 58,000 Americans could die? And Mrs. Kennedy was hardly a whore - you could only wish to accomplish all that she did. I realize that we have the right to free speech but one could only hope that your words come back around to bite you - either through your own demise or someone you love.
@Iownmyown This is a ridiculous myth. JFK started the Vietnam war and he had no intentions of pulling out until victory. LBJ simply continued JFK's policies.
So many people naively and sentimentaly think that the Vietnam war would not have happened had JFK lived. JFK would have gone to war with vietnam. He was fiercely anti communist and believed in the domino theory. he did not want to leave Vietnam. That is what JFK the movie want you to believe. But that is not the case. you want any proof of that? ok...
in the openning of the movie JFK we can see The president interviewed by walter cronkite in sept 63 . JFK said "It's their war , they have to win it or lose it". Sure but that is taken out of context. you can watch the complete interview here on youtube "Cronkite Interview of JFK " he finishes the interview with those words "I don't agree with those who say we sould withdraw, that would be a terrible mistake".
Another interview that same month for ABC "OUTTAKES FROM AN NBC-TV INTERVIEW WITH PRESIDENT KENNEDY ON SEPT. 9, 1963 " the vietnam part starts at 3:50 . At 4:51 the reporter asks JFK "are we likely to reduce our aid to south vietnam?" I let you listen to JFK answer wich is very clear .
The very morning of his death JFK was delivering a speech in fort worth.
JFK IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS, ON NOVEMBER 22, 1963 (PART 5) listen at 3:44 to 4:53 tell me if those are the word of a president who wanted to withdraw from Vietnam...
Bobby Kennedy (who was a supporter of the war until the and of 1966) said in an interview in 1964 with John Bartlow Martin when asked "There was never any consideration given to pulling out?" Bobby 's anwer couldn't more clear he said "No".
During the 1968 presidential campaign Bobby Kennedy admitted he and the JFK administration shared some responsabilities in the Vietnam war involvment of USA...
Ike and Kennedy seem as though for whatever their faults, they were good men and would be rolling over in their graves at the likes of the Bush neocon scum clan and it's followers and might not like Obama much either. Ike was a American as was JFK and they didn't want this corporate fascist, militarist, war mongering bankster trash running and ruining this country like they have.
@RichardElden There's no credibility in saying there was no danger of nuclear war or to assume invading Cuba would not have been without dire consequences. Say otherwise all you want but it can't be substantiated. You're in as much a minority view on that as those who deny the holocaust.
Assuming Eisenhower, Nixon, and the CIA all knew about the Bay of Pigs op beforehand, they kept Kennedy in the dark about it. Then the CIA lied to JFK about how it would be in order to make him agree to it.
@RichardElden If Nixon had been President, the CIA would've been in control of him. He would have let them lie to him. Not that we elect the CIA, but your trusty CIA took care of JFK. Interesting how you don't consider what mistakes Nixon would have made had he been President then. Grass is always greener on the other side when the President you hate defeats his opponent you love. If Nixon had been like LeMay, there would've been nuclear war.
@RichardElden That doesn't make JFK a bad President... the fact of how he handled it I think says a lot about his character. It is good to be able to trust a President, and he still accomplished a lot of other things in his short 3 years in office. If you ask Presidential historians, they will all unanimously agree that JFK was a good President but they will all also agree that Eisenhower was a better President than JFK. Eisenhower typically ranks around 5th best of all time but JFK 10-15th best
@RichardElden Again, for you to make such a non serious claim makes me wonder many things about how your mind works. I can only imagine with curiosity how you think the Cuban Missile Crisis would've ended under another President. The only alternative would've been Nixon since the election was so close or Johnson had Kennedy died in office sooner. Nixon or Johnson, feel free to give it your best shot.
@RichardElden you're entitled to your views, but you can't have it both ways - that you are for what's best for America while being unamerican in condoning assassinations of a President and possible future President. The Confederacy was also guilty of this same kind of hypocrisy. Who needs terrorists with patriots like you?
I sense here unspoken reservations about Johnson. Eisenhower though not a career politician, was pretty astute in his observations. He knew this was a big deal and I believe, came to prefer Kennedy over his former Vice President, Nixon.
It's fair to think that I am reading too much into this, so criticisms of my comments aren't necessary.
@RichardElden Why do people like you insist on broadcasting to the ENTIRE world the fact that they're Class "A" ASSHOLES?? Unless you were dropped on your head from a three story window as an infant, I can only assume that your momma considered you a pain in the ass, & ignored you, creating your need to get attention, by being a dick :O). Oh-I see that your name actually IS "Dick". How appropriate!! I doubt a coward like you would use his REAL name, but I'll call you DICK anyway, if that's OK!!!
Eisenhower knew that the UN was involved you can tell by how shaky he was when referencing his recollection of how they heard the news of JFK's assassination, completely bewildered, i have been studying JFK's speech on April 27th 1961 and Eisenhower's farewell to the nation, and they are both eerie in their nature and disturbing in their revelation. the sad thing is, no one ever did listen. It is easier to look away then to see the truth and act accordingly. Do not fear them, they do not win!
I've always wondered what Eisenhower thought about JFK's assassination - this is great footage. I would love to know if before he died, Eisenhower wrote down or stated any thoughts about a conspiracy to assassinate JFK. Do you know? Especially since he warned in his departure speech about the grave danger of the "military industrial complex". I wonder what his deepest secret thoughts about the JFK assassination were...
@lzambeni Good point. I wonder too... Unfortunately, most Americans wouldn't change their lifestyles -or risk getting involved- even if they watched twenty people testify about it in person, with documents to support them!!
Eisenhower knew the government was crooked and he told JFK that he was working with nazis. But know on saw that coming Not even Ike thought this could happen. You can tell by tha way he is caring himself in this interview
I think he is very underated, you also have to understand the time period he was President when he took office we were involved in the Korean War the economy was bad, He did a lot of good things for the country and he was not corrupt. I actually like Ron Paul, But I would also like a modernized Jefferson. Todays Presidents are corporatist couldn't care less about this country.
Eisenhower was the greatest President America Ever had, History has proven that to be a fact. Very tough Man, you can read up on him in Paul Johnsons Modern Times and also Excellent Movie IKE Countdown to D day. Eisenhower would be appalled at what is going on today. Very Great Man!
He was a fine president, but I'd argue against "greatest".... Ike would be heads and shoulders above the scum we've had since his era. Still, I'd prefer a modernized Jefferson myself.
@HankTh3Dwarf He was having a rough day, I'm sure. Somebody had blown his friend John's brains all over the sidewalk a few hours before, you understand.
Ike was the man. As commander of the Allied forces from '43-'45 and as President of the USA from '53 to '61, he was cool as a cucumber. His response as posted here on that dark day in November '63, he nailed the resolve of the American people.
@arKat17 Five star generals' appointments are permanent. Even after they retire, they still receive full pay and they're still commissioned officers of the Army. Eisenhower had to resign his commission to become president, but once he left office his commission was reactivated, so general was proper. 'President' was also a perfectly valid form of address, but it didn't override "general" for that reason.
@arKat17 Eisenhower preferred to be called General instead of President. This is the same as George Washington, who also preferred to be called General instead of President, and also denied any attempts by the people to proclaim him a King or refer to him as Your Majesty. Washington set the tone for the country, and Eisenhower was simply following suit.
hard to describe to a younger generation the character and stature of Eisenhower. whatever his critics might say, he offered a very reassuring presence to the public on that November day.
Eisenhower was a well respected man and a great president. The sincerity in his words show his passion for his country during such an awful time in our history. God bless America!!
disgusting! a reporter asking a former u.s. president and general of the army "how people feel a broad". first of all, we call them WOMEN today, not broads! and as to how we feel them, well let me just say that is a matter best left up to the individual. i myself prefer to cup my hand under the breast and give a little squeeze.
what a true american patriot, i being 25 wasnt alive then but damn he could really get your pumped up even if he spoke this quiet. its also telling how he really took time to pick and choose his words wisely. his military industrial complex speech is often debated about what he meant and was it a warning. i feel he was almost warning the powers that be that hey americans are smart, dont tell them in was a lone nut with magic bullets. its also nice to see ppl not be dem or repubs, but americans
Though a President known for his very broad smile, particularly in public, Eisenhower's temper was rarely seen in public. Here we see it coming, though mildly, and understandably to the surface. A candid portrait of a truly great man.
@Narrowgaugefilms He was one of the few 5 star generals in the U.S. During World War II, they awarded it to five men. However, he joined a historical group including George Washington, U.S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and John J. Pershing. This is a much smaller group than U.S. Presidents. I'd prefer to be called "General" as well.
Israel & Mossad assassinated Kennedy under the orders of Israel PM Ben-Gurion because Kennedy wanted to inspect how Israel ILLEGALLY acquired Nuclear power and Nuclear weapons and how many Nukes did Israel have and where it came from
@ bombteacher: Upon completion of his Presidential term, his commission on the retired list was reactivated and Eisenhower again was commissioned a five-star general in the United States Army.
i dont remember this day.i was around 4 years old- it was a horrible act and a very sad day for a nation and the world- i was in dallas in april this year and went to visit the sixth floor museum and the old building( book depositary building ) - thanks for posting-
I also remember that day, and being on my lunch hour in the 9th grade in Muskogee, OK. Our school principal called it to our attention over the school intercom as we were eating in the cafeteria....overcast and in the 50's outside.
I wonder if Bush or Obama could rattle off the names of the assassinated presidents and their successors like Eisenhower did...

PBXVIILY 8 months ago
@PBXVIILY

His response as posted here on that dark day in November '63, he nailed the resolve of the American people.
tlibber 11 months ago 3
Why do they call him 'general;'? He was out of the office of the Presidency at this time, why don't they call him President?
arKat17 1 year ago
@arKat17 Five star generals' appointments are permanent. Even after they retire, they still receive full pay and they're still commissioned officers of the Army. Eisenhower had to resign his commission to become president, but once he left office his commission was reactivated, so general was proper. 'President' was also a perfectly valid form of address, but it didn't override "general" for that reason.
TheOnlineCommunity2 1 year ago
@arKat17 Eisenhower preferred to be called General instead of President. This is the same as George Washington, who also preferred to be called General instead of President, and also denied any attempts by the people to proclaim him a King or refer to him as Your Majesty. Washington set the tone for the country, and Eisenhower was simply following suit.

hard to describe to a younger generation the character and stature of Eisenhower. whatever his critics might say, he offered a very reassuring presence to the public on that November day.

disgusting! a reporter asking a former u.s. president and general of the army "how people feel a broad". first of all, we call them WOMEN today, not broads! and as to how we feel them, well let me just say that is a matter best left up to the individual. i myself prefer to cup my hand under the breast and give a little squeeze.

what a true american patriot, i being 25 wasnt alive then but damn he could really get your pumped up even if he spoke this quiet. its also telling how he really took time to pick and choose his words wisely. his military industrial complex speech is often debated about what he meant and was it a warning. i feel he was almost warning the powers that be that hey americans are smart, dont tell them in was a lone nut with magic bullets. its also nice to see ppl not be dem or repubs, but americans

Though a President known for his very broad smile, particularly in public, Eisenhower's temper was rarely seen in public. Here we see it coming, though mildly, and understandably to the surface. A candid portrait of a truly great man.

So strange to hear a former president called "General"....
-doubly so since he was president after he left the army.
Narrowgaugefilms 1 year ago
@Narrowgaugefilms apparently he preferred it over "Mr.President"
donaldnewton58 1 year ago
@Narrowgaugefilms He was one of the few 5 star generals in the U.S. During World War II, they awarded it to five men. However, he joined a historical group including George Washington, U.S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and John J. Pershing. This is a much smaller group than U.S. Presidents. I'd prefer to be called "General" as well.
